View Full Version : Acquisitions Monday May 29 - Sunday June 4
Today yielded some nice prizes:
- Thayers Lemon from Rainbow Natural Foods (http://www.rainbowfoods.net/) - If you are in Ottawa and want Thayers W/H this is the place to go.
- Baxter of California A/S Balm (as per Scotto's suggestion in my Best Bargain Balm thread)
I picked up the Baxters at the MenEssential store, which is located less than 10Km from my place. It is not a beautiful store, but it has some great stuff. And samples! I left with the following samples:
- Anthony Logistics Pre-Shave Oil
- Anthony Logistics Shave Gel
- Anthony Sport Bar of Soap
- Anthony Sport Face Scrub
- Anthony Sport Lightweight Face Lotion
- MenScience Advanced Shave Formula
- T&H 1805 Shave Cream
With all of those samples I left ME feeling like it was Halloween or something.

After a very long wait, T&H finally made good on a replacement for my little ebony super badger which had been shedding like a madman:

I dealt directly with T&H.
Stopped by a little cigar shop this afternoon (for a pack of smokes) and noticed that they sell AOS gear. Since I haven't had any experience with AOS I thought that I should give them a try. Picked up AOS Lemon Cream and AOS Alum Block. I don't know if it was just the store that I was in, but the products seem a shade on the expensive side... is AOS worth the money, or is my cash better spent on other things?

I read some where some wise man at B&B wrote they are overpriced most AOS is crap but some of their cream is quite ok to shave . that is now what I have in my mind overpriced for most items but a good quality lather...

AOS shave creams are actually very good. Some gents here would disagree but that is only my opinion. As far as their other products, yes they are overpriced.

They're ok. You can find better products for the money.
So,
I think the general view is that AOS creams are expensive but good ("very good", Austin; "Great stuff", Scotto) while the other stuff is OK but does not represent the best bang-for-your-buck, so to speak. I'll have to give the AOS cream a try tomorrow and see what I think (I expect the Lemon will be nice and refreshing, especially since it has been very warm and humid here for a few days...). Once again, thank you for your opinions.

Well... not without driving for hundreds of Km's. To the best of my knowledge there are only 2 places in Ottawa (my present hometown) where I can get AOS; the cigar shop where I picked it up today and Holt Renfrew.
Still, I guess that I can't complain too much since ME is only a short drive away.

Ron, any chance of getting a review of the Vetiver cream? Is it high quality? Gentle on the skin or potentially like a welding torch flame for more sensitive skin?

My pleasure. I used it this morning. It is the vetiver lovers vetiver! No perfume this cream, real smokey vetiver. Salters house is not one to scrimp on quality or cut corners either. Excellent quality lather, lubricates without greasing.. Somewhat of a moisturizer after the shave too.

The Salter's Vetiver is an acquired taste, so to speak. I found it to be everything Ron says it to be but it really has, what could be called a vile aroma by some, myself included. Try to mooch a sample first, if you can.

Ah, then you don't like the smell of vetiver. I love it! The smokier, the better. This is the REAL DEAL! It is hard to be leive that a grassy plant can smell so excitingly smokey..:001_wub:

Water, in case you are planning on ordering Salters Vetiver, it's no longer made.
Scotto

Yes it is; that is kinda the point of the thread. They have started making it again, and it is available through Charles at QED (http://www.qedusa.com).

I have been thinking about adding it to my next QED order. I have never tried Salter's shave creams and just want to be relatively confident that it is quality stuff and will not burn my face off.

Hey Andrew,
Like the prisoner said before he was to be hung, "No noose is good noose!"
I disliked the Salters Vetiver so much that i sent a full tub of it to the other side of the world; in fact, to the USA; i even took the shipping costs on my account, so badly i wanted it to get away from me; Mark (TSSB) knows all about it and is enjoying it still, maybe even right now!

What did you so strongly dislike? Was it the scent or the shave quality?
I don't know about you guys, but if somebody did make a cream that smelled like bacon, I'd buy it.:tongue_sm

Now I definitely have to try it. I love the funky stuff. Give me barn-yardy Rhone wine, horse-blanket-smelling belgian gueze, and now smoked fish vetiver cream. To each his own! Viva la stank!

I love these similies... I am sure this one will help, knowing how cold it is in upstate NY, vetiver smells a great deal like the smoke from a peat fire.

...........as you pee on the peat or perhaps, as my friend Pete would say, "it isn't peat?":9898:
While I didn't mind the scent of Salter Vetiver - I just didn't find it nearly as relaxing as say mint, almond, rose, sandalwood, etc. It is certainly something different, and it is quite nice - but I am not certain I would buy it again (I traded my jar as the individual I was trading with wanted to try a jar of salter, and between it, salter mint and salter citrus - the vetiver had to go).
Bottom line - it is a fine scent - but it is a scent I would be more interested in cologne form. Word to the wise - don't use it salter vetiver the say before you choose to use a softer scented cream (IE:Rose/almond) as the residual scent from the vetiver will muck up the next days scent - so use it, then use a stouter sandalwood, or heavy cologne scented cream.

Received today in the mail....
Creed Green Irish Tweed EDC
Floris 127 EDT
From Target....
Proraso soap (I've tried the cream 2 times and traded both tubes) figured I'd give the soap a chance.
Proraso cream aftershave
I sprayed a mist of each scent on opposite arms...
The Floris 127 smells very light and seems that it would be perfect on a hot summer day. The Creed smells very familiar to me but the fragrance is very rich.
I may have to shave tomorrow just for the heck of it.

Twenty years ago when I first started shaving with a brush and a Murkur razor I used to primarily use Palmolive Shaving Cream. I was bought an Old Spice Shaving Mug the following Christmas. Unfortunately I lost the mug in a house move. I thought I packed it, my wife thought I packed It but neither of us could find it. This obviously demonstrates how careless I have lost the wife now too!
I kept an eye on ebay and waited for this little beauty...

It's older than the one I had as the box had a clear plastic top so you could see the mug inside, it also seemed very expensive at the time at about £11.
I wanted a mug with the lid and most importantly it had to have soap, the more the better, this one's never been used so I'm now torn between using it and keeping it. I think I'll use it, the smell alone takes me back years!

It's amazing how certain smells bring back old memories in vivid detail.
Ahhh, just got back from a trip to DC and awiting me patiently on the stoop was a Priority Mail Box from the B&B Decant Club, with a 25 mL Cobalt Blue Bottle of Floris Eau de Santal Extreme.
Thanks Rik! Great packaging :thumbup1:

Are the blades vintage or new?
Hi Kyle,
in the German forum www.nassrasur.com they say that the blades are vintage and approximately 50-60 years old, but in good condition, so also good for using and shaving.
I've bought them from www.muehle-pinsel.de, they sold a bunch of it...
I'll try them next week and post my experience with it, if this is required!!!

Had Breakfast with the Ron at the COWSBC meeting. On the way back picked up a variety of items from Crabtree & Evelyn, Body Shop, and Akin's Whole Foods Store.

The C&E Sweet Almond Oil is great stuff; I'd been using a sample tub for a while. At $12 it's a steal
Decided to try this little tube of Bigelow Shave Cream from Body Shop on a lark
The Lemongrass & Mandarin soap has a scent that I just cannot get enough of. I'm decanting some of this into a travel tube
Jojoba Oil to see how it does in the desert
