Yesterday I received my first Speick shaving stick, so had much pleasure in using it this morning. Is it just me, or does anybody else find the Speick stick to be the same as the Palmolive stick, bar the colour? The smell is pretty much identical to my nose, performance the same. Blindfolded, I think I would be unable to differentiate between the two.

Both great performers David, although I would probably be able to differentiate on scent. I don't really like the sound of your post as I know that you are not a fan of the Palmolive scent.....

David, no worries.... the scent has grown on me now.

I've never smelled the Speick stick, only the cream. I don't find the Speick cream and Palmolive stick smell alike. I suppose both could be classified as "peppery" in a way.

The stick must smell different than the cream. Now I must get a stick!

I was just about to tell you you're nuts. Instead, I just went to my soap cabinet where I have a stick of each grated into bowls. Closing my eyes and mixing them up so I didn't know which was which, they smelled remarkably similar. There's an additional note to the Speick scent but it's not strong to my nose. Interesting observation.

I just did the same thing but to my nose, the Speick is much more herbal than the Palmolive, which is slightly spicy and "green". I could tell them apart easily as each have a very distinct scent to my nose.

Performance wise, I prefer Speick over Palmolive by quite a big margin.

It might depend on how old they are. Mine are a good two years old and were grated into uncovered bowls. The Palmolive one is upside down so it's sort of like having a lid but the Speick is exposed because that's the one I use more often. There's a difference but I was surprised that it wasn't as much as I thought. Speick, being scented with the speick plant has a pretty distinctive fragrance it just was closer than I expected.

I agree completely. Speick is a spicy, herbaceous lavender, while all I get from the Palmolive is cheap, generic, soapy, cologne type fragrance.

I am not necessarily knocking the Palmolive, because I take everyone's word for it that it is a great performer (I have 3 sticks grated in a bowl and one stick left as is). But it remains to this day one of the very few shaving products that I have had a "reaction" to and it just didn't get along with my face.

I do love the Speick though. Give it time David, I think it should outshine the Palmolive.

I was gifted a number of European shave sticks by a very generous member, and among them were these two. I had no previous experience with either. I found the Speick scent to be milder than I had expected (I kept hearing "peppery", but I found that note to be rather faint). The Palmolive smelled considerable stronger, but it was not a particularly agreeable scent to my nose. Performance-wise, both do a fine job, I'd give a decent advantage to Speick though.

If the speick stick is anything like the cream, its gotta be wonderful! Thats my personal favorite scent......Now if we could somehow transfer that scent over to my Arko....hmmmm

Are you asking with regards to scent or performance?

Slightly odd question I know, but what is the diameter of the Speick stick? (including the foil)

It's amazing to me how differently people perceive things. To me, the Speick stick smells nothing like the Palmolive stick. To me Speick is earthy and smells of herbs and mildly spicy and the Palmolive is really soapy smelling. Personally, I find the Speick outperforms the Palmolive by a good margin.

30mm.
I love the scent of Speick, to me the scent is hard to pin down, perhaps citrus-y? The performance, not so much, but the scent was so nice that I traded for a bottle of aftershave and was pleasently suprised to find the exact scent in both.

Speick is a marvellous soap and one of my top three sticks (along with Valobra and La Toja).

I have been thinking about trying the Valobra shave stick. I happen to like the Palmolive (classic) and the Speick equally, performance, and scent wise. La Toja and Arko might be my 2 current favorites at the moment. I can only hope La Toja does not stop making those great shaving sticks..

Mine is 28-mm according to calipers, exactly the same as Palmolive EU, D.R. Harris, and La Toja. Perhaps I have spent too much time measuring sticks and vintage stick holders, though: http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Shave_stick#Dimensions

The Palmolive EU stick performs a little better than Speick, for me. But I prefer the scent of Speick.

I love Speick! I could use it exclusively and probably be pretty satisfied.

To me it does not smell much like the Palmolive, though.

You must give yourself a whiff of Arko to "cleanse the palette" between sniffs :ciappa:

I find the Speick stick to be exceptional in performance and scent. I really like the Palmolive stick, too, but not as much as Speick. I don't think they smell alike; not even similar, actually.

The replies to this thread make very interesting reading, and a prime example of how different scents are interpreted. Whether Speick and Palmolive are alike or not, one thing is for sure....it surely delivers!

replace "cleanse" with "nuke" and I'll +1 that

It's funny. After reading this thread again, I just went into the bathroom and tried the blind smell test (they are milled into the exact same type of bowl) and immediately picked the Speick as Speick. However, I then brought the two bowls into my kids room and had them mix them up and place them into my hands for a blind sniff. I got Speick once and the Palmolive twice (meaning I picked Palmolive thinking it was Speick). My eldest son thought they smelled so similar there was essentially no difference. My youngest son just wrinkled his nose at both. So my results were 2:4. I really would have assumed the Speick would be easily recognizable each time as with eyes open, it smells more distinct. Interesting stuff.

But yes, they both perform great.

Today completed Speick's week long rotation. I love performance, although I found my skin to be much tighter after the shave - noticeably more than with other soaps. Nothing a splash of Thayers didnt take care of

It does have a great scent and for that reason alone I would keep it in the rotation

So much Speick love in the past week that I just had to go up and do a quick 2 pass shave with it so I can join the club. I actually milled it into a little Pyrex bowl and it about exploded in my hand with copious lather. Pretty good stuff, glad everyone has commented on it and gave me the motivation to try it.

And I only did a 2 pass so I would have something to shave in the morning too. Isn't that how it goes for most of us?
