Face-lathered with my new 620 tonight with Razorock XXX. Such a different experience from badger, and I have to say, I think my lather was better. Still a lot to get worked out, but I may be a convert. The backbone is amazing, but the hair itself is still very soft. The thing I like the most is the way the brush improves the lather on the face while not hogging it in the least. I'll have to get some pics on here soon.

I love my 620 more than my Simpsons CL1. Gives a great lather with soap, cream, face or bowl lathering.

I've got a 620 on the way. I face lather and the 620 sounds like the perfect brush for face lathering. Glad to hear you gents enjoy it!

I have a 1438, which I think is the same knot but with a painted wood handle. I have tried it a few times, but am having a hard time figuring it out. I get a nice lather the first pass, but by the time I go to lather up for the second, there's barely enough to cover my face. I spend plenty of time loading, and use a ton of water. I have no issues with my larger boar (pro48), or my badger/horse brushes, anyone have any advice?
Is your 1438 new? I have a 1470 and it took some time to break in before it would start releasing lather. It's quite densely packed for a boar so it used to hog all the lather for itself. Now it's one of my favorite brushes.

Yes I've only used it 3 times. I guess I'll have to be patient. :)
Give it a little more time and you'll love it. You might even start to wonder what's with all this badger business talk when boar is available, and almost always considerably cheaper. :001_smile

You need to use it everyday for at least three weeks, then you will realize what a great brush it is. I've got a Duke 2 collecting dust on account of a broken-in Semogue.

Make sure you allow it to dry FULLY between uses. The wet/dry cycle is what allows the tips to split and become softer.

Patience and persistence will pay off. My 1438 is my go-to brush and gets used almost daily. I will occasionally use my Simpsons Case or my Altesse, but I prefer the 1438. I face lather, and it's outstanding.

Thanks guys. I will just rotate it in every other day. Looking forward to the results. I must say, I really like the size and look of the brush.

My 1520, which has the same knot as the 620, face lathers better than any badger brush I own.

My curiosity is sky high right now! How does this compare to a Savile Row which is my current favorite (3118) brush? Where do I buy one?

I've never used a Savile Row, but boars in general are great! Once broken in they can be as soft as a badger, have more backbone and cost vastly less. A boar AD is much easier to feed than a badger one. :wink2:
EDIT: Oh that's right you want to know where you can buy some boars. Start here

There are so many more:
West Coast Shaving

I've been ready to order an 830 for about a month now. Every time I read a bristle bashing post I pause, because shipping and depreciation will make a resell unpractical. Reading threads like this make me want to risk the $30 though.

If you go into the BST forum and type in 830 into the search box, I'm sure that you'll be reassured about it's resale value.

Enjoy and welcome to the world of Semogues. You should try the 830, best brush they have, in my opinion!

Thanks! I've been reading that thread with much interest. I still have some breaking in to do with my 620 and have since ordered and received a SOC with cherry handle. I'll chime in if I have anything to add.

I bought both the 620 and the 830 at the same time and have been breaking them in (along with a 1305) and find the 830 vastly superior to the 620. The handle is a big bigger which makes it much easier to lather for someone with big hands.
