View Full Version : Loaner straight for first timers.
Trying to give back a little.... If you're a newbie wanting to try a straight but dont want to invest for fear of not liking it, I have a solution. I have one straight, ok two straights I will loan out to two newbies(less than 50 posts). They are loaners though. Keep it for three weeks and send it back so I can rehone and pass them forward again. Shipping to you is free if you're in conus. Just post "I'm in"
and at the end of one week I will pick two newbs to get loaners. I have a round point hollow grind Wade and Butcher and a Landers Fary and Clark. Mods if this is inappropriate please forgive me and delete.
Yours, Jim

Just curious -- Wouldn't the n00bs need a strop?
I will include a small handhled paddle type strop also.

As one of the noobs you are aiming for, I think the straight is just a bit... intimidating compared to a DE. Especially since you're still trying not to cut yourself up when starting out :)

I completely ignored the DE. Went straight to the straights and haven't looked back. I love it.

Really cool idea. I jumped from electric to straight myself, doubt I change any time soon.

:punk: Many thanks to Jim for such a selfless offer. I've been really keen to try a straight (say, that was sort of on the edge of being a pun there, whoa now, there's another one) for a while but the up-front investment has been a little more risk than I'm ready for. This offer makes it possible for me to feel good about giving it a shot. Thanks!

Jim, this is an awesome idea, and I am really impressed. Having just started straight razor shaving myself I would like to wish the two new guys good luck. I'm still working on shaving more than my cheeks with the straight, but believe me, it's less scary than it seems.
Shirai, I saw you mentioned the initial investment, which was my main road block for years. Of you end up liking the straight razor you should check out Larry's sight unseen razor set up from whippeddog.com. A little over $50 will get you a shave ready razor (usually nothing too pretty, but perfectly usable) and a simple beginners strop and the info you need to get started.

Jim,
Please consider me in the next round. Perhaps you can post to this thread if you start another. I got into wet shaving because the allure of straights. Getting my DE basics down first.
Cheers,
Jeff

Very generous I must say, I wasn't really thinking about straights until this offer. Count me in as I am up for a challenge....My only question is how do you safegaurd these instruments. I don't have kids yet, but hope to in the future. I have a very addictive personality :wink2:
Hi Jason. One of other fellows bought a straight, so they asked me to pass their loaner to the next person. That would be you.:001_smile PM sent to you.

I would like to throw my hat in the mix if there is a straight availible I have switched from 5 blade cartrage to saftey recently , Orignally straights drew me to wet shaving but i felt saftey was a smarter start until i know the in`s and out of honning, blade quality and tehnique of single blade shaving as the DE blades come ready to go. This tho would give me a chance to hold one and give it a shot before i throw a wad of cash into a vintage blade that may or may not be a lemon. I have a small collection but will PIF one of my safetys. Let me know.
