Hello everybody,

I guess you could call me a newbie by post count, but I have been wet shaving with a DE for close to two years now. Like several who I'm sure have preceded me, and several more to come, my inspiration or mentor would be Mantic59.

I had been a life long user of a various Gillette "systems". I was pretty sick of paying many dollars for patent protected cartridges that cost pennies for Gillette to produce. Their canned cream's and gels didn't make the irritated shaves any better either. I have to admit, I didn't actively seek a replacement for my shaving woes... Like most I just accepted it as the norm, and hoped that maybe Gillette's next system would be better. Then I stumbled onto Mantic's channel, and all that changed... I was introduced to a world of better alternatives. Razors that didn't look like they were designed for a 4 year old, and didn't vibrate for no good reason. Soaps and creams that didn't smell like a cologne intended for a teenager going to the prom. Brushes, and balms, and warm towels.... A dignified way of doing things, that best of all left me with a BBS face that didn't feel like I had stuck it in a paper shreader...

Sooo....Thus far my shave den has remained fairly humble, as in the past I haven't had much cash to try every razor, brush, cream, oil, etc. My mainstay razors are two super speeds that were my maternal grandfathers, which includes a '56 red tip, and a '59 standard flair tip. I just recently added a '58 ball end Tech that I scored at an antiques flea market for 8 bucks. After cleanup it looks like a new razor.

For a brush, I have been using the cheapy Van Der Hagen boar brush that actually seems to work really well for me, and quickly produces a lather I may add.

I have tried both soaps and creams. I could make a fair lather with a soap, but prefer the cream for ease of use. My mainstay creams have been either the C.O. Bigelow labeled Proraso, or The Real Shaving Co. sensitive cream I bought at a local Rite Aid. They both have worked fairly well for me.

For blades, I had initially gotten a sampler pack from ebay. Tried all of them. What I found was my razors and skin seemed to play best with Dorco's, Super Iridiums, some of the 7 O'Clocks, and the Feathers were amazing. What didn't go over so good was most of the middle eastern produced blades. Again, not having ton's of cash to buy packs of favorite blades, I checked out my local flavor. The Walgreens labeled ASR DE's I bought were like shaving with a serrated steak knife.... Yeah, I pretty much keep that pack around just to dispose of spent blades from other manufacturers. I have actually had decent shaves from the German produced Wilkinson's my local grocery store sells.

With a little more cash now available (girlfriend is out of college and working), I am considering a stock up on blades. I just got my order today of Blue 7 O'Clock Super Platinum blades (my sampler had Black Super Platinums) that I want to give a shot tonight. I have read here and else where that people feel the Blues are similar to their late Super Iridium brothers. I have also been talking with a vendor in these forums, a gentleman from Spain who has a source to get genuine Super Iridiums, which I will stash away. And of course, I would like to get a nice reserve of Feathers.

So that's my story... :001_smile

Ah-ha Super Speed!!!. So that's where you've been hiding all this time (and you lurketh no more), have you now...but that's OK because now you're with us. :lol1:

Anyway, welcome aboard the B & B (besides being enrolled in the fictional, sacred and utopian Order of Shavedom). Please feel free to come up to the sun deck & 'sit-a-spell' and thank you for dis-engaging you're 'lurking device' (another member comes out from the mist).

Sounds like your off to a great start, and yes,...this Forum has the knowledge, ideas, and alround 'know-how' to assist in your Wet-Shaving experience. In a nut-shell...your 'gonna' love it here.

Once you get your other Razor Blades (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/208375-DE-Blade-Sampler-Which-Blade-First?highlight=), maybe you'll find that 'holy grail' of blades!!!

Although, you may not be additted yet (I think I'm holding up fairly well...with a few exceptions), because we all suffer (gladly and are doomed perhaps), from this shaving complusion (and other Acquisition Disorders), because at times..."Resistance is futile". http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-alien003.gif

Please don't forget once you get time....to tell us a little about yourself in the Hall of Fame sub-forum.

Thank you all for the warm welcome....

Yes my lurk setting is currently off. I promise to try to participate in these forums when ever possible. I must admit to you gentleman (and any lades that may be present) there is another.... The majority of my "free" time at work I usually spend as one of the regulars on the Iboats forums (one of my many passions is boating). But I will make it a point to keep in touch with this forum too. Looks like you guys have a nice spread here with all the different shaving topics, OT discussions, and vendors.

Something I have been looking around for is forum rules. You guys seem like a pretty laid back bunch, but I want to be sure I don't make any newbie mistakes. When in in Rome, right? Anything specifically I should know about?

Just to be clear on something;

Thank You for Your Service

Count, not sure if you mean military service or something else. If you do mean military service, I would be flattered, but I can't take credit where credit isn't due. I have not served in the military, but humbly respect the men and women who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Welcome to B&B.

In regards to rules, just check the TOS. Essentially act like a normal human being (with a natural obsession for shaving items) and you will be fine.
All the best, and enjoy your shave.

Welcome! Your razor collection sounds awesome! I've been looking at similar vintage Gillette's on eBay. I wish I had my grandfathers old razors though; I remember scrounging around in a drawer at my grandmother's when I was a little kid and seeing a couple razors in there-those are long gone now :( Wish I at least knew what kind they were.

PS I can't believe that username wasn't taken already

Thanks BK.
Yeah, I lucked out with the razors. My grandparents were of the depression era, so not much got discarded with out due cause. I can remember being a young sucker, and looking in my grandparents bathroom closet and asking the question "What are those for"? At some point when I was a teenager, and had 2 or 3 hairs on my face, I remember getting a crappy pack of ASR blades, and trying to shave with them. Of course I did not understanding the proper technique, (I'm sure I probably held them to my face like a modern safety razor), and the dry face with the canned cream didn't help.... needless to say they were put back in the closet for the next 10 years or so.:biggrin1:

They were still there when the time came, along with a vintage old spice mug, and a well used Ever Ready brush. Never have used the brush. As thin and stiff as it is, it probably would only be good for applying lather to my upper lip.

BTW, I respect a man who uses products that smell like pure gasoline, and are made with bits of real Panther so you know it's good....

Welcome to the finest shaving community around the world!

I like Feathers too (today I got my SEVENTH smooth shave out of a single blade! But as always YMMV).
