Hi everyone! I should start by saying thank you already, since I've been lurking on these forums since I stumbled across the idea of wetshaving a couple of months ago. There's such a wealth of information on here, even for me! See, I'm probably a bit unusual around these parts as I'm a lady-type, and so looking for info about leg shaving.

I got interested in traditional shaving both because I'm a cheapskate (so didn't like cartridge razors) and a treehugging hippie (not fond of throwing all those disposables into landfill), and so started researching my options.

So far I've set myself up with a Super Speed (1952?) I found on ebay, some Dorco blades, a crappy, moulting boar brush (my brother's cast-off) and my Dad's gel-in-a-can (though I have some KMF shave cream on the way).

I had my first try yesterday, with OK results. My goal was to just go very easy and aim not to slice up my knees or ankles. I only did one ATG pass, with no nicks or slices but it was hardly the closest shave of my life. Next time I think I need to be a little more bold.

My main problem seemed to be that I ran out of lather half way through. Turns out legs are a lot bigger than faces! My assumption was that I should just get a bigger bowl and use more product but would love some advice on this. Am I likely to have more success with bigger bowl/better brush combo and hoping that will last, or should I whip up a new batch for each leg? If I leave lather sitting there for a while (yesterday it took me about 25min to do both legs) will it affects its quality? Thanks all!

Welcome. I find that using a super lather (soap lather then add shaving cream) really makes it stay a lot better than either independently.

Welcome aboard! Both my daughter and I started wet shaving a few months ago now and are starting to get a feel for what works for us. First of all, congrats, this really is a great way to shave in terms of money, environment and once you get the hang of it, pampering yourself. Don't mean to get you started on RAD (Razor Acquisition Disorder) but different razors really do shave differently. In fact, my daughter has coarser hair and has to use a more aggressive razor than I do. Double edges are great and as my daughter discovered, don't typically clog as easy as Injectors. I found that my not needing as aggressive of a shave that an adjustable (for me a Schick dial adjustable) on the lowest setting gives me the best result. That is something you will have to experiment with in order to learn what works for you.

As for running out of shave lather, Yes, we women have to use a little more product than the men in our lives because our legs have more surface than their faces. However, also be aware that you can add a little water to your brush (you'll have to play with the amount) and you can usually whip up a little more lather with a little effort. (That is provided you are using shave soap or cream that isn't canned) I don't know if you are using a shave scuttle or just a shave mug but I use a small earthen vessel about the size of a cup- works great for me. Also the kind of cream/soap you are using can make a difference on how much lather you get. I use Godrej and the stuff lathers like a dream, a nice thick lather that makes for a smooth shave.

As for brushes, my hubby bought a Dr. Badger but found it was too big for his face. Guess what? Perfect for legs! He gave it to me and I love it; it lathers nicely, helps prep the hairs for shaving and the large size is to my benefit.

The best advice I can give you is to experiment and see what works best. You will find you love some products and hate others. I am fortunate in that my husband got rather wrapped up in his shaving and a wide variety of razors available for me to experiment with; I did, however, rush to buy a couple of ladies razors. My daughter loves the Lady Gillette and it gave me a nice shave but at the end of the day wasn't the best fit for me. Good luck and be sure you use this an opportunity to pamper yourself a little. My shave time is me time. :001_smile
