Fellow Wet Shaving enthusiasts,
I just wanted to post a progress report. I got started shaving with a DE back in July thanks to the wonderful help of the folks here at B&B.
I've been making good progress. I ordered a sampler blade pack a little while back and have tried a few so far. To date the best blade for me that I've found is the Treet Blue Specials, which I didn't get with my sampler pack. When I first joined B&B and posted an intro Leisureguy offered me a free cake of soap and as a surprise he added a pack of Treet Blue Specials to the package when he sent it to me. Once again, many thanks Leisureguy!!!
But, I've finally decided to get a little more adventerous with my shaving. Researching straight razor shaving is what led me to discovering the world of DE shaving. I ended up starting out with DE shaving because it was a little easier on the budget and a little easier to learn.
Well, I recently acquired a shave ready razor and strop and experienced my first straight razor shave last night. I truely intended to start out small, tackle a small area of my face with the straight and finish up with my DE. So, after preping my face and stroping my razor I started out on my right cheek. There was a bit of drag but otherwise it went well. After looking back and reviewing the shaving portion of Lynn Abrams' "World of Straight Razor Shaving" DVD I realize my angle was about half of what it should have been. Anyway, I moved on to my left cheek. That also went well. That was really the most I had hoped to accomplish with the straight for the first shave, but since it went so well I decided to try going a little further. Before I knew it, I had shaved my entire face and neck with the straight. I ended up with a couple of minor weepers on my lower neck but otherwise had no nicks. Because of my less than optimal blade angle and the resulting drag there was a little irritation, so I decided to stop after the first pass. There was one small strip of visible stubble under my jawline that I cleaned up with my DE, but otherwise it was a passable looking shave. It's definitely not as close as a multi-pass DE shave, but good enough for work today.
