View Full Version : Daily razor cleaning routine?
What is an acceptable razor cleaning after a shave? I find myself trying to keep mine dry and shiny. I have been removing the blade and wiping everything dry. Just wondered what everyone else does. From what a lot of old ones look like (before cleaning), I don't think daily cleaning was the norm.

Wet Shavers are generally rather anal and many of the have elaborate cleaning rituals, I just rinse mine off and lay it on it's side to dry before hanging it back in the rack.
Every 6 months or so I'll take my whole rotation and soak them it hot soapy water and scrub with an old toothbrush.

This, and then when changing blades I wash of anything that may have built up, usually there is nothing but my old drill sergeant would not have approved of doing a field strip without checking for residue/cleaning as required.
I just rinse it off, wipe it gently and hang it up to dry. Every few months I'll break them down for a thorough cleaning.

I change the blade every day, and usually wipe the (Feather blade) wax residue off the razor while I do so. Then I brush it with toothpaste every couple of weeks. It's a Feather AS, so I think it is incapable of showing any signs of wear.

I just rinse them off when I am done. I wipe them down when they need it. I thought I would have to use scrubbing bubbles on them periodically but they stay shiny if I just wipe them off.

I rinse it, put it on its side during cleanup. Then, dry any remaining wetness with a towel and put it into the rack. Simple is best.

I hot water rinse and dip in a apothecary jar of Bacardi 151. Never seem to need to clean them of soap buildup unless I take one traveling.
I'm sure rubbing alcohol would work just as well, but then I wouldn't have an excuse to have a pint of rum in the bathroom.

For my DE razors: I just rinse & shake. Every 4-6 weeks I clean with a toothbrush and dish washing liquid to remove the soap scum.
For my straights: Rinse, towel dry, fold some TP and wipe any moisture from between the scales. Then strop so that it is ready for the next shave. If I do not plan on using it for a few days then I spray with a light coating of oil.

I remove blade, disassemble 3 piece razors, run under hot water and dry off. TTOs get the blade removed and dried, razor rinsed off and dried. Re-assemble and put up. After every shave.

I rinse with hot water, shake the excess water off. I clean under running water with a soft toothbrush when I remove the blade for a new one.

I rinse it with hot water closed upside/downside including inside the handle. Twist it open to rinse the blade and inside of doors. Shake it gently while closed to get rid of most water. Hang it open on my stand for it to dry.
Once a week, i clean it up with aniseptical handgel (contains ethanol and perfect for killing germs and removing soap), cotton swabs and hot water. I have a microfiber rag for polishing it up afterwards.

I figure the less I handle the blade, the better it is for me AND the blade, so it stays in the razor until it needs to be tossed. Other than that, a rinse in hot water than lay it on the side of the sink. When changing blades I may buff the head to make it nice & shiny again, but that's it.

Same as many here. Lay it on its side after a good rinse under running water. On blade changes, if I see it has some residue, a shot of scrubbing bubbles and a rinse. I do posih the old silver plated ones every so often and keep them airtight in a baggie after they have thoroughly dried.

Rinse under hot water with the head loose shake dry. And then dip in isopropyl alcohol. When I change blades I use Scrubbing Bubbles to clean the razor.

This is exactly what I do and I blow the blade off before re-inserting it into the razor.

I disassemble, rinse, and dry. Shiny clean razor every shave with almost no periodic heavier cleaning required. I've got TTO and three piece razors and I can't remember the last time I cut myself handling a blade.

I loosen the top on mine and run them under HOT water flowing hard to rinse them clean. Shake "dry" and store in their rack.
Every other shave, I melt the blade, then reforge and grind it.

I have 5 razors in all. I use a different razor each week. I simply rinse the head with hot water and shake it a few times to clean it. I know some of the guys wipe the blade, etc. I suppose that might be important if you are using a different razor each day. Be that as it may, I've noticed some blades even say, " Rinse only, do not wipe the blade."

Hot water rinse, wipe residue from around the head, open doors slightly for an internal hot water rinse, shake several times and a light tap on on towel.
At blade change a quick light scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush and a Scrubbing Bubbles scrub and polish with Maas at razor switch over time.
Don't wipe the blades as I want to benefit from the coating for a smoother shave.

This is exactly my routine as well. As a result my razors look good, shave well, and have little chance to develop any blemishes.

Like a lot of others, I rinse my TTO under hot water, toss the blade, and hang to dry. For me, this hasn't been adequate because I have a bunch of soap scum built up. I'm going to try using my Oral B toothbrush and some toothpaste to remove the gunk. Utter laziness is the only reason for the lack of maintenance.

Just rinse in warm water and shake dry. Every time I change the blade I clean it up with an old toothbrush and dish soap. Looks nice after that!
