I had been using an electric for the last 20 years or so. When my Norelco finally went "TU" I decided to go back to wet shaving. I never liked the newer multi-blade disposable razors, so I went to Heimerdingers in Louisville (http://www.heimerdingercutlery.com) and bought a Merkur HD. Tried it for a while then got to looking for my old Gillette Slim Adjustable that I received as a graduation gift in 1966 when I left for college. Surprise of surprises -- I found it tucked away in a box of stuff in my parent's basement. The Gillette still works great, but what's become my favorite razor is the Feather Stainless. The Feather razor paired-up with the Feather blades works great. The gap on the Feather is so small (.008") that it is almost impossible to nick yourself. I did have to buy a new brush, as the old one was really shot. I found that there are lots of good products out there now and wet shaving is still as popular as ever. While blade gap is only one of the specs that determine how a razor shaves, it's one of the specs that's easy to measure. Here are some measurements that I got on different razors: Merkur HD: .027", Merkur Progressive adjustable: #1 .024", #3 .035" (did not measure above #3), Feather: .008",
Gillette Slim Adjustible: #1 .008" - #9 .036".

Welcome to B&B! You might want to check out the wiki some time. I believe that it has a list of the blade gaps of a number of razors. It'd be itneresting to see if your measurements match the ones there.

Bill welcome to B&B
i completely agree the Feather AS is just a delight to use and with the Feather blade is the perfect performer. It's my favourite razor. I was in two minds about it because of the price but it provides consistently the most comfortable shaves I've ever had

OP: The Gillette slim adjustable is a great razor. It is my go-to razor when using a double-edged. It's also my go-to if I have to tidy up a bit after taking a straight shave.

If you received that as a going-off-to-college gift in '66, I wouldn't classify you as "old." Welcome.

You are right, the gaps play only a small role in the quality of the shave.

Hi. Just turned 59. Must have started shaving with my Gillette Fatboy in '66, '67, or '68. Then eventually went to the Atra, Norelco electric, and Mach 3 and now have gone full circle back DE shaving. Now I love to get up in the morning because it means I can shave.
