Just received my chrome merkur futur today and I have to say it looks way better in person than online. Threw in an astra sp and mixed up some QCS queen Charlotte soap with kmf lavender for the first shave with it and wow this de is amazing! Set it at 6 and the razor do all work to get me a perfect bbs shave. I have seen the futur of my shave life and it looks very smooth and comfortable. The weight of this razor is fantastic and the balance of it is perfect. The learning curve for de shaving just became drastically reduced thanks to this razor. Last week was my first de shave with a merkur 34 and now that I have this razor to learn on I have piffed the merkur back to my dad who got it for me.

Be careful with that futur...the head will shift and give you a weeper.

I've had a Futur for almost a week now and it's even better than I hoped it would be. As to the shifting head, I don't know what you're talking about phenix. The head doesn't shift.

I have mine set at 2.5 and it mows through my beard and picks up the tough spots without any effort. 3 was just a bit too much for me, no nicks or irritation at that setting but I could feel that 3 wasn't shaving any closer than 2 or 2.5 and I could feel the blade more than I like.

I have since this original post moved down to 3 with slight pressure and get the same results but with a quicker shave. When I want to slow down and take my time like I used to with a straight I'll move it back up to 6 and treat it as I would a straight but for the most part 3 works for a shave in close to half the time for me. Just curious how does a futur on 6 compare to an r41?

Wow! A Futur set on "6" has a blade gap of 1.75mm. "Aggressive" is probably too mild a word to describe the shave at that setting.

By contrast, a Muhle R89 has a blade gap of .76mm, the same as a EJ D89. Older non adjustable Gillettes generally have smaller gaps than the EJ/Muhle 89s.

No blade gap figures on a Muhle R41, but it has a reputation as an aggressive razor.

Gap is only one factor in aggressiveness. You can have a very low gap and have an aggressive razor, like the Old Type. Blade exposure (the amount the blade that protrudes beyond the tangent between the head cap and the safety bar) in conduction with gap help determine aggressiveness. At the lower settings a Futur has a very low blade exposure in spite of the large gap. This yields a mild but very efficient shave which deals with my heavy beard easily and comfortably. When the gap is increased the exposure also increased because the tangent changes.
