Is this the accepted way to hone a wedge? Or a any other tips would be appreciated.

You need to decide if you want to tape or not to tape. I prefer no tape on wedges to ensure a repeatable bevel 100% of the time. Taping wedges evenly is a little tricky. Once you tape, going to no tape will require a lot of material removal to bring back. A taped wedge LOOKS nicer tho :).

This is what I will be honing. It has some hone wear so I might just go with no tape on this one.

Nice. If you are going to restore it a bit be careful not to nick the edge, as honing out chips from a wedge is murder without tape...but the shaves are so nice.

No restore. No rust just patina.

Good luck Matt. I feel we are paralleling each other in our embarking on the world of honing and restores. I just received my King 1k yesterday and started attempting to hone a brummel wedge I restored last year. I started to hone on the 1k without tape and it was causing major hone wear on the spine so I decided to tape it. I figured I would tape for the bevel setting and put another layer on for the unicot method with my coti. I didn't have much time to devote to it last night, but I will tell you even with the taped spine I am having trouble setting the bevel. I worked on it for a while and couldn't get it to shave arm hair. I called it quits for the night, but will be going back at it soon. Good luck with your wedge, its a nice straight and hopefully the near wedge will provide a little easier honing experience than I am having presently.

Cool. Yeah I honed my first straight the other day on my coticules but it has not been shave tested yet, it was not in really bad shape. As far a the tape thing goes, any razors that I care about the appearence of are going to get one layer of tape wwhile setting the bevel and then a second layer for finishing. I don't know if this is standard practice around here or not but I'm like you I don't want massive hone wear. As far as your bevel, just keep at it you will get it, maybe apply a little pressure to the blade? I am not one to giving advice about honing though, maybe someone else will chime in. If you add a layer of tape I am certain that it will come soon. Good luck.

I see why no one likes honing wedges. That are a royal PITA. Just thought I would put that out there, now back to the King and try to get the bevel set.

I honed up a champion wedge this afternoon I ended up using the coticule.be method and I had to use 2 pieces of tape and now boy she is sharp I will shave with it tonight.

I need to try that I saw it earlier. I was only using 1 piece of tape.

My strategy is to use some tape and wear it out until there is none to get to where Kentos described. just removing the volume of metal using a DMT C was staggering... maybe it was the rolling x strokes i used, but I recently honed up a wedge and my wife won't stop telling me how i spent all of 2 days just setting the bevel...

My plan was to use one piece of tape to set the bevel and then add another to finish. I worked one it for about 2 hours last night and it is getting there but not shaving hair yet.
