View Full Version : Straights to DE -- starting to like my DE's more!

I started "wet shaving" about two years ago now and jumped right in with some straight razors. I did not even try my first DE until maybe 6 or 7 months into my new hobby, but even then, I always favored my straights.

Recently, however, I find myself reaching more and more for my DE razors. I have a Goodfella, Muhle R41 (2011) and an EJ D89L. I just seem to get a closer, more comfortable shave with the DE. I still enjoy my straights, but I seem to be enjoying my DE's more and I almost feel guilty. :sad: I would say I am about 50% DE and 50% straight at this point, but I can see my DE use going higher.

I know people here use both, but was curious if anyone else started with straights and then grew to love their DE's more. I almost feel like I'm breaking up with my straight razors. Ha! :001_tt2:

Well, I am new here, but found DEs and this forum because doing a straight razor shave every day just isn't in the cards for me. I have tired it on and off for a couple of years, but I have a wife and two daughters so the morning schedule in the bathrooms is crazy. Dad taking 20 minutes just to shave doesn't go over well.

I can shave with my DE in the shower on a normal morning, and enjoy a nice straight razor shave on the weekends when there is time to enjoy the ritual a bit more.

As cool as shaving with a straight razor is, the DEs took over the market for a reason. I don't think you have to feel bad about straying away a bit. Variety is the spice of life, and you have the skill to do the straight whenever you want.

~~~I started wet shaving with safety razors then drifted into straights. Like you, I get a BBS easier with a safety razor but at this point in my wet shaving career, I'm digging the straight razor ritual more, so in a month's time, I might shave with a safety once or twice at the most. This habit could change as I'm loyal to none, sworn to fun=:-)
~~~I don't know if this would work for you but have you ever considered shaving at a different time during the day? This time of the year I don't have time to shave when I get out of bed but I have plenty of time to shave around 8 to 10 PM, so that's when I shave

@ shakin_jake:

Thanks for the thought. I don't want to divert the thread too far, but even with a BBS shave at 7:00 AM, I am pretty stubbly by 5:00 that night. I haven't given it a serious go, but the couple of times I have shaved in the evening didn't seem to have the longevity to get me through the day. Maybe I should give it a serious whack to see what happens.

~~~If you try it, let us know how it works out for you, including if it doesn't work out. Who knows?, maybe you will inspire a few others here to give shaving at a different time of day a try.
