View Full Version : I feel like a Jerk...my wife got me a razor

My wife has been out of town to Monassas, Va. visiting family. I dropped some hints about visiting local antique shops. She called me yesterday excited to tell me that she found me something that I would like. It's a really loving gesture considering that she has a tough time with my AD. I tried to get her to tell me what it was but she wouldn't budge. I told her that she probably got something really nice. Without thinking I said, "As long as it's not one of those 70's style plastic gillette razors that look like a garden hoe and parades itself as an antique ." (Techmatic) After that I heard silence...My wife said that she thinks that's what she got.
I tried to console her but I put in my foot in my mouth. She freaked out and couldn't get the razor because it was deep in her luggage. She did say it's a Schick and that it has a knob. So now the question is, is it an adjustable injector or a safety band razor? (I'm hoping for the adjustable) I can't wait to see my wife today but I'm also slightly curious about the razor. I do feel like a jerk though.

Whatever it is, you better tell her it's interesting and thank you. :wink2:

Yeah, that will cost you. If you would have just put a touch of finesse on it, maybe changed a word or two, like maybe "You bought me a present? You always buy the best things and have such awesome taste".

But now, FTD quick.

She will have a very tidy and clean house with a vase full of lillies (her favorite flowers) to come home to. I even took a half day off to meet her.

Dude, you're good. You already said it was different than what you thought. Unless she really knows about vintage razors, just get excited when you see it and say "OMG you did great! Do you know how cool this is?!! You're the best baby, I'm sorry I made you feel bad" Been there, done that.:thumbup1:

Good save. Don't forget some chocolate. Not a lot, maybe just a small box of Ferrero Rocher. :001_smile

Maybe one idea for damage control...

Have two web pages saved, one with an injector, and one with a Knack. Whichever one is furthest from what she got you, tell her that is what you were talking about. Then gush all over what ever she bought. Take one of your favorite razors off your stand and put it up there.

If it says Schick, then it isn't the techmatic. The Schick adjustable is an awesome razor, it is my favorite injector razor. I'm sure that's what you have.

I would go with an Adjustable Schick Injector. Which would be an awesome score.

The Schick Band razor has a lever, not a knob. Of course I guess this depends on how descriptive your wife usually is.

This the Band-Razor:

Schick's version of the Techmatic.
Either way I will love it!

NOS, hell, just tell her it would be a shame to mess it up, collectors pay big money for stuff still in the original packaging (which isn't a lie).

Display it right in the middle of the dresser until she gets good and tired of seeing it, then let it disappear to a box somewhere or to the BST.

She could have meant it had a knob at the end, as in a Krona. A DE razor looks more hoe-like than an Autoband razor, which looks nothing like a hoe.

Go find a piece of junk "antique" razor similar to that which you said to her, then when she shows you the one she got, show here the other and say "you did good."

Then take her out to dinner with flowers, chocolate and something with diamonds on or in it.

Could be a Stick Schick Injector, which would be totally awesome.

... something with diamonds on or in it. :scared:

C'mon ... man, he'd really be in for it on something "big" if he bought diamonds for something this "small"! I mean, short of a car or house, how would he top it next time ... and yes, there is always a next time! :yesnod:
(Gee, good thing I don't let my wife read B&B ... give her ideas! :yikes:):lol::lol::lol:

WHOA there, this is a question you MUST answer. Of course the answer is always the same - NO!

THE MYSTERY ENDS:
After a sincere apology, leaving behind an immaculate house, flowers and making dinner. This is what I got

215518215519215520

It's a Schick Instamatic Band Razor (Schick version of the Techmatic)
Now I'm curious to see how it shaves. I'm gonna order a cartridge soon to find out.

insomniac
01-25-2012, 04:47 PM
Can you even find cartridges for it anymore? I'm pretty sure the Techmatic carts have dried up.

Say "honey, this razor is so beautiful I would never dare shave with it" and put it in a hallowed place in your shave den.

Yeah, after telling my mom I was using old Gillette DE razors, she was in a store and saw a new DE razor, one of those cheap, made in Pakistan TTOs. Didn't say a word, just thanked her and shaved with it a couple of times. Not a bad shave, just not the quality of a vintage Gillette. It is something that I can take with me when I travel without feeling too bad if something happens to it. Either way, it's the thought that counts.

Hope for the best! It's the fact she thought of you & your hobby. My wife, although not a fan of my hobby on occasion will we will be in the car & she'll say, "let's go to an antique store" or after we've gone I'll notice a new razor in the bathroom. She's on my team & that's all that matters. Good job on the extra effort on the house & going the extra mile.

It's as bad as a blunder as answering the question, "Does this make me look fat?"

My assistant asked that question to her husband a couple years back. He either has a lot of guts or rocks in his head. He answered her "no! It's not the dress".

It's one of those that you don't use. She asks why and you tell her you don't want to mess it up. You want to preserve it because it is so special and came from her. Put it on display proudly.

Hey, she was totally looking out for you, that is extra cool.

My wife came home with a cased valet w/ strop. I looked her in the eyes and told her I love her and she did good. And she never has to buy another one of these ever again. ever. again. But keep looking baby!

She doesn't care, I buy her bakelite bling and fountain pens.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. You're safe, man. As long as it isn't the exact model you had mentioned you'd hate. Legitimately, you can be surprised, delighted, and grateful for her getting you something great! Just don't over do it if you don't like it...it's a dead giveaway.

It's great that your sweetie thinks of these things for you. My wife thinks this whole wetshaving and B&B thing is obsessive lunacy. And the worst part is, I really can't come up with a compelling argument to the contrary. Plus, she's always right.:whistling:

Overall, it all worked out just fine like a cheesy 1990's half-hour sitcom. Thanks for the wonderful tips guys. BTW, I did rearrange my den to display the Schick (my cased Enlglish Tech will have to go on hiatus for a while).

well done Krona. As long as there is love and understanding, everything works out well in the end!

My advice, scold her bad and tell her she embarrassed you by buying such a crap razor. Tell her to do her research next time and go to this link www.badgerandblade.com (http://www.badgerandblade.com) where there are many ways to educate her on the shaving principles. And then send her out into the world with the knowledge of wet shaving. Then eventually she'll come back with a 6 pack of unused bottom dialed gillettes new in the package!

That's free advice too :biggrin1:

I think immediately after "send her out into the world" is where reality diverges from your version. :001_tt2:
