Sorry if this has been covered already but I did several searches and nothing came up. I see people selling used soaps and I was wondering how you would clean/prep it to avoid getting anything from the last person that used it. Using vintage razors is one thing, it is easy to clean them with a scrub and soak in whatever solution you use. I guess for a hard soap you could scrape a layer off and that would be ok. But what about a soft soap or tub of cream? Is this a legitimate concern or am I being too cautious?

Germs and such can't live on a soap, as the soap breaks down their cell walls. If it does bother you, though, you can give a puck of soap a thorough rinse, or scrape off the very top layer from a tub of cream or soft soap.

Boiling it in vinegar does the trick I'm told.

It is soap after all. This is more of a personal "ick" factor thing than a real worry about "cooties"

You have nothing to worry about with the soap, as a microbiology student can assure you that as far as any germs that may get get transfered to the soap are concerned most of them will not survive. Any that would would put the previous owner in the hospital most likely so as long as there is no blood on the soap you should be fine to use it as is, if you want to be super cautious then take a clean knife to scape the top but otherwise don't worry about it.

I clean used pucks of Williams with old formula, tallow based Penhaligon's soap.

But that's me, Mr. Vegas.

I found this mixture only to work when combined with vintage Yardley.

Soaps I have no problem with. Cream in a tube, ditto.
Cream in a tub I would probably scoop a bit off the top and toss.

You had my full confidence up until the student part. There's always next semester for something to pop up that was extremely relevant, jk.

Thanks everyone for the input. I had been on the fence on some deals that came up in the past but it wont happen again :biggrin1:.
