View Full Version : The Monday "Mourning" Shave

Although I am a vendor, I am also a hobbyist and collect (or is it hoard) vintage soaps, blades, razors etc. There are so many good shaving items that are no longer in production and more and more great items are dropping by the wayside every year either through reformulation or discontinuation. I like to devote Mondays to using these out of production items and dub it the Monday "Mourning" Shave where I pay homage to the "dearly departed". If you would like to join me, please post your shaves in this thread.

Monday "Mourning" Shave

Razor: Wilkinson Sticky*
Blade: Polsilver
Brush: Simspon Douglas*
Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet (Tallow Version)*
A/S: Vintage Yardley*

Now that the holidays are over, I am back to my regular routine of using mainly discontinued (and missed) shaving items on Mondays -Something I dub the Monday "Mourning" Shave. Everything marked with an * is dearly departed.

I enjoyed an excellent shave followed by a refreshing splash of Yardley aftershave. I believe that the aftershave is from the 1960's and am amazed that it is still good.

Razor: GIBBS Click Pen*
Blade: Schick Chromium*
Brush: Simpson Ehsan*
Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Old Spice*

I enjoyed a fine shave from products that are no longer in production. The Simpson Ehsan ginned up a fine lather from the Old Spice soap and the Gibbs Click Pen adjustable loaded with a fresh Schick Chromium blade mowed down the stubble with ease. A splash of Trumper Marlborough (no longer available as an aftershave splash) and I am ready for the day.

* indicates that the item is no longer in production.

For today's Mourning shave I decided to go with a puck of C&E sweet almond oil soap. This soap was popular here around the time I joined B&B. Both the soap and the cream has been discontinued. It's to bad. They were both very nice products.

It is too bad. I never had a chance to try the C&E Sweet Almond Oil soap but I have used the Sienna.

Great thread Phil. In honour of your request for using dearly departed shave goods, Monday next will bring a shave with MEM English Leather shave soap. Yes it is tallow. And yes, it is on a level with AOS. I have some Avon Leather a/s I will follow it up with.

Cheers, Todd

Hey Phil, look at these. I think you may be interested. And yes boys, I do have one more waiting for some interesting ideas.

Cheers, Todd

PS: I thought I should add some additional information. The cream looks a bit odd in the last photo. Let me assure you, there is nothing wrong with it and it has NOT been used. When I got it a few years ago it had been sitting sideways(both jars to boot) and had run up against the lid. I always check the contents when I buy stuff like this. So I took my fat little finger and pushed it down where it belonged and as you can see from the jar opening it left a sort of "smudge" of cream on the inside edge. Just wanted to make things clear.

I have been stocking up for my "mourning shaves". This week I received several vintage aftershaves including a back-up Yardley, Houbigant Fougere Royale, Kings Men, and Avon Island Lime. The C&E Sweet Almond Cream is on the way. Bring it on! :w00t:

I am taking part in the Cobra Classic Tour so had to deviate a bit from my "Mourning" shave theme today. I was still able to use several discontinued items (marked with an *)

Monday, January 23rd

Razor: Cobra Classic
Blade: Feather Pro Blades
Brush: Simpson Douglas*
Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Vintage Trumper Violet (Tallow Version)*
A/S: Avon Island Lime*

This was my first use of the Cobra Classic. I was a little reluctant at first as it has a reputation for being super aggressive. I did not find it aggressive at all...rather it reminded me more of a more solidly built injector razor. I enjoyed a great, no drama shave. What some people call aggression, I call efficiency. It is true that I can get away with one less pass when using the Cobra but I achieved a BBS shave with zero irritation. Now excuse me while I go shopping for a Cobra Classic...RAD has been reactivated.:w00t:

Well I had to join in on this just for the fun of it. I do not have many vintage/discontinued items save for three or four items. Including a cake of Trumper tallow almond soap.

So today it was the EL shave soap
Avon Leather a/s
Gillette ajustable(slim set to 4)
Feather DE blade.
B&B 2009 Butterxcotch Kent

To say it was exemplary is understated. It is nice to know that at one time this sort of morning shave could have been considered normal if you paid a bit of attention. I suspect the MEM English Leather soap is from the early seventies. It has no bar code. It almost assuredly tallow and probably carried an "expensive" price tag in those days of around $2.99. Stands toe to toe with the best of them.

Now I just need to get my hands on some genuine MEM English Leather a/s. This was my Da's scent of choice and it smelled better on him than it ever has on me. I wish I could have gotten him into this before he passed nearly a decade ago. I would give just about anything to see him lathering up a brush full of this soap and finishing it off with some MEM EL from my childhood.

Cheers, Todd

Today shave was:

Razor: Cobra Classic
Blade: Kai mild blade with 9 shaves on it.
Brush: Thater Cream Stout 2
Soap: RazoRock Thirdeye

Cologne: Old Spice*

The only part of my shave that really counted as a mourning shave was the cologne.

I had to alter my proposed "Mourning" shave. Although I did indeed start with the Wilkinson Flip Top, I ditched it after one pass in favor of the Cobra Classic. :blushing: I just cannot put that thing down. The C&E Sweet Almond Cream was fantastic as was the splash of Yardley Spice aftershave.

The "Mourning" Shave

Razor: Gillette Fat Boy*
Blade: Schick Plus Platinum*
Brush: Vie-Long Prototype (Horse)*
Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Colgate Mug Soap*
A/S: Kings Men*

I enjoyed an excellent shave today from items that are mostly out of production. In the case of the Vie-Long prototype, it is not yet in production so I figured it was fair game for the "Morning Shave". This was my 2nd use of the Vie-Long prototype brush and it is evident that it will be great for either bowl lathering or face lathering. I can hardly wait! :001_tt1:

The Limited Edition Shavemac brush ginned up a nice creamy lather from the Tallow version of Trumper Sandalwood soap and the Gibbs Click Pen with the recently discontinued Polsilver blade mowed down the stubble with ease. A splash of Trumper Marlborough (no longer available as an aftershave) and I am ready for the day. Very nice indeed!

Cobra Classic
Feather Pro Guard (today was the 8th shave on the FPG and it's still going strong)
Shavemac D01
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet (tallow 5th)*
Aqua Lavanda Puig
Kouros*

Looking at the YSL web site it appears the Kouros is no longer in production, they offer Body Kouros and Kouros Sport.

The discontinued tallow 5th Blenheim Bouquet is a great shaving soap, If I wasn't saving this soap it would be in my rotation more often.

Blade: Schick Plus Platinum*
Brush: Shavemac 2007 LE*
Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Trumper Violet (Tallow Version)*

I enjoyed an excellent shave with mostly discontinued items (marked with an *). The Weck Open comb is a mild shaver but it gave me a great 3 pass shave. The old tallow version of the Trumper soaps are excellent and it is a real shame that they felt the need to reformulate to a veggie base. A splash of Yardley Spice and I am on my way.

I used C&E Sweet Almond Oil this morning too. I'm mostly use soaps so it was surprising how much cream it took to make enough lather for three passes. The lather was great, slick, it had lots of cushion, it was well hydrated, and my face feels great post shave.

I have several bowls of Yardley shave soap but only one bowl of the black label variety. To me, the black label is the best of the lot...it produces an extremely rich and slick lather and sets up my beard perfectly for a shave. I had a truly enjoyable and close shave today followed by a splash of Houbigant Fougere Royale aftershave. All items, with the exception of the Glyce Lime soap, have been discontinued.

I was busy today and did not get a chance to shave until bedtime. I am glad that I waited though as it gave me a chance to use the Vie-Long Beehive Silvertip brush that arrived this afternoon. I am very happy with how this brush turned out. It is extra stuffed and has really good backbone yet it also has good flow through and a soft face feel. What more could you want? The only downside is it needs to be de-funked a bit...nothing a little shampoo and fragrant cream cannot accomplish. I enjoyed an excellent shave followed by a splash of Yardley Spice. A great shave with mostly discontinued products (marked with an *). I picked up a few injector razors from Dave a few months ago and had used the black one several times. This was my first time with the white one (I do not know the model numbers). I paired it with a vintage Personna 74 Injector Blade (another recent pick up) and enjoyed a great shave. The Old Spice soap lathered easily with the Ehsan brush and I was reminded that I really need to use this soap more frequently...it is very nice. A splash of Vintage Yardley aftershave and I am ready for the day.
