I'm there!
Have ~ 3 years worth of soaps'n'creams, the same for blades and about 600ml of AS already.
Plus... don't want to get killed by SWMBO.
Let's hope I stay in this year longer than the 2011 Sabbatical.

My wife has always been slightly amused with my little hobby, so thankfully I don't have to worry about getting killed, but after just over a year I've accumulated enough shaving accoutrements to last until Armageddon. I've throttled it back the last few months (diverting most of those funds to fountain pens and pipes I'm afraid - thanks a lot, guys), so I think if I can just keep myself from clicking on the BST forum I'll probably be okay.

i'm trying. I haven't bought a new cream or soap for a few months. I'm not sure if I can make it through next year, but we'll see.
I have more than enough gear to last through 2012 and almost enough willpower to last until the middle of January.
Have fun guys!

Haha.. I have a hard time passing up a good deal. lately, it's been easier since I have way too much stuff and can't justify buying seconds. Unfortunately, it's the pricier stuff that I don't have and well a good deal is still pricey. I wont last so I wont bother.

I've always wanted to try something on the edge, with a hint of daring-do. More importantly, this gives me that excuse to splurge on myself for the next two weeks.
I'm off to see a man about some DR Harris aftershave....

I basically went all of last year without getting more than a handful of replacement blades. It's just not fun. I think you're better off giving yourself a yearly budget and keeping in that. If you sell something you replenish your budget. I have a budget of roughly what I used to spend when I was shaving with cartridges and canned goo, which is around $150.00 to $200.00.
And, btw, after a year of restraint, it sure felt good to go to town and spend my budget in the last couple of weeks. New badger, R41, some TOBS and a few other things. Nice thing is I actually polished off a few lathers and needed to replace them!

Who's in?
I'm in! I've got three brand new jars of MdC, about 6 unopened 20 packs of Personna 74's, 8 yellow Feather packs, my slant, and 11C. My weak link, however, might be my aftershave balm (Pre de Provence - only two tubes of that!). Otherwise, I'd probably be set up for a decade-long shave sabbatical!

I am so in (mostly because I said something to the wife about it, and got "that sounds like a good idea.").
I've burned through all my trial samples, with the exception of one shave with Pen's Endymion, and a few cologne decants. I've got my brush lineup in place: 5 boars/3-5 badgers, depending on how many handles I get drilled out this weekend to source knots for before 1/1/2012. Blades are covered for a LONG time. Got a 95% tub of RazoRock XXX, same for a Tabac shave stick grated into a QCS wood bowl, and three tubs of QCS creams that came in yesterday (still have a pile of once/twice used QCS samplers for travel). Razors are good to go: a nice rotation of around 10 Gillette TTO's, from a flare-tip Super Speed to a #66 Aristocrat (and I successfully resisted JeffE's gorgeous #21 on the BST to boot...but just barely). Witch hazel: check; AS lineup: check.
My only exception will be a B&B LE.
When's kickoff? I'm READY!

Just talked about this with my wife last night.
I was going to order some Truefitt & Hill after I figured out which scent I liked best out of the starter kit (which has yet to arrive). Then I realized that I have maybe 2-3 years of cream and soaps. Time to tone the ADD down a little and work through those before I move on to something bigger and better.
She was VERY happy to hear this...

Did you get the one with the cologne? I don't care for creams, but T&H makes some great colognes. I really like Trafalger, and my wife is nuts over Spanish Leather.

Count me out- I still have to acquire DR Harris Malborough and Lavender. And some Institut Karite. And a straight razor set up. And more fountain pens. I only have one ink (oh, the horror)
on edit: I just realized my Speick stick is getting low, and I don't have the cologne either. No way I can do a sabbatical.

After the damage I did this year I needed the 2012 sabbatical. Then I get an email today from WCS telling me I have a $50 gift certificate waiting to be used courtesy of my sister-in-law's husband. A couple months ago I gave him a DE, brush and cream to get him started and the gift certificate was his way of thanking me for getting him hooked. So it looks like I will now be placing at least one order sometime next year, probably sooner than later.

I should be in for 2012 and 2013 but I have less willpower than djh. :cursing:
I'm in. I didn't do as well as I would have liked last year, but I think I've gotten pretty stable over the last six months. I've resisted both the super dense super Rooney Silvertip affair, Thater two-band, and more sexy M&F. I'm out of Speick, but I think I can hold off for a year since I've got so much other stuff.

Eugh, the last week or so I've gone through a little buying spree, so assuming my new puck of Tabac and half a tub of Acca Kappa 1869 will get me through a year, I think it's high time for me to show some gentlemanly restraint myself :)
I bought enough soap and blades to last me a year or two.
I've tried this before and always failed.

I think that I will be participating in the sabbatical. I have enough shave cream/soaps to last about two years, about 500 blades, three brushes, four razors, two blocks of alum and three bottles of witch hazel.
The only out I will leave myself is that a guy I know is heading to Paris and Provence this coming May. I have already recruited him into DE shaving and he is willing to be my MdC mule.
I will be laying out for three jars of MdC and have him haul it back in his luggage. If all goes according to plan - I should be able to make it through the 2013 sabbatical, too.

12-18-2011, 03:52 AM
I'm gonna do this. I'm only a n00b in terms of posts and time served, but in just under 6 months of DE shaving I will have built up the following.
Razors: Merkur HD, Merkur 15C, Muhle R89, Gillette Tech, Gillette Superspeed, Gillette NEW Long Comb, Plastic Handle Tech...plus another mystery razor on the way from a friend.
Brushes: 3 x Boars, a badger that belonged to my Father, An EJ Best Badger...and Santa is bringing me a Duke 2 in Best for Christmas.
Soaps: MWF, DR Harris Marlborough, Palmolive, TOBS Sandalwood.
Creams: T&H Trafalgar, TOBS Sandalwood, Palmolive, St James Sandalwood & Sage.
A/S: Tabac, TOBS Bay Rum, T&H Trafalgar, TOBS Sandalwood, Musgo Real.
Cologne: C&E Limes, DR Harris Marlborough.
I have enough to see me through 2012 and it is definitely time to slow down!! :scared:
My exceptions will be:
1) Straight razor restores. I have 2 already out with a restorer and may send a couple more that I picked up at antique stores if I get on okay with a straight. I figure this is just bringing into a usable state things that I have already acquired!
2) DE Blades. Not enough to see me through 2012 so I will need to place an order at some point, probably around mid-way through the year.
3) A replacement when I run out of Tabac aftershave, which is probably not far off. I love the stuff. I have a hankering to try Proraso so I might get that instead and if I don't like it so much then I'll just have to live with my decision.
I am also starting to think that I want a Muhle R41, but that will just have to wait until 2013!
Edit: Well, look at that! It only took 50 posts for the ADs to spiral out of control and require 'treatment'...They warned me that B&B could do that to man. I should have listened!

I am not much of a sabbatical person, I am afraid.
There's just too many items around that I consider must haves.
Which they are not, of course.
Nevertheless, these sabbatical initiatives have fueled my sense of frugality.
The purchasing policy next year will probably be something like 'use before buy'.

12-18-2011, 06:17 AM
I admire this thread but I unfortunately cannot join. There's no way.
I want to, but there are 4 straights on my "must-have" list that, should I find them for a reasonable price, will end up breaking the sabbatical. I do, however, have enough software to last me for a year, so I may just do a non-razor sabbatical. :)

I'm in! I think I'll order a R41 before this year is over, and some more WH. After that I really should be set for 2012. If I find a Fatboy really cheap in the wild I might crack, but other than that I think I will be ok with this. Especially since I don't really have the funds to be buying to much.

Hrm... I think I'm in, for the most part. I don't think I have enough blades to make the full year, but I've got enough soaps and creams for a good long while. I think that I'll try for this year with the exceptions of replacements, LE items, a straight razor setup (depending on how I like it, someone is planning on gifting me something), and beard and mustache care items (like mustache wax, beard gloss (http://www.royalshave.com/p/426-019-00/bees-beauty-gentlemens-beard-care-gloss.html), and other sundries), and possibly an Osma soap.
Let's see if I can make it past April this time.

Okay, looks like we've got about 20 so far. We're all on the honor system here - post here if when you fall off. Vlad used the term "gentlemanly restraint" last year, and I think that's the basic idea here. I'm kidding myself if I think I'll make it the whole year, but I'm going to stay on the wagon as long as I can. Be strong, gents!

Can I exempt vintage brush handles badly in need of a refurb? It seems a shame to let those poor pretties suffer with ugly hair. That's it, just the old brushes. And an H-2 Gillette. I'm buying one in '12, as that razor (and I) will be turning 50. So just those two things -- old handles and an old razor. And some Arko soap. I'm sure I'll be traveling for work and the TSA doesn't like my Bigelow. So, three things. Is that okay?

Same rules as last year, I'm in need of replenishing my normal gear, I am running low on stuff. I will order 2 bottles of Osage rub, 5 packs feathers, 2 tubs proraso, 2 sticks arko........that should last me a full year. I am not putting ANYTHING on a "wish list" or if this or that is available either.
NOTHING ELSE!!!!!
Whos in with me, feel free to order and restock your normal stuff that will last u an entire year, and that's it, no more!

Reasonable? What excesses can be disguised by such a word that falls barely noticed upon innocent ears. :wink2:

not me...i'm a daily shaver, and change my blade every 2 shaves, sometimes 3....so i need about 100-120 blades to last me a year.
i have enough blades, creams, soaps, brushes, razors etc to last a few years, but am not sure i can resist purchasing more...i got a few more days to consider this.
i might have to make a gentlemanly bet with a co-worker....1st to cave, buys the other guy a tub of Castle Forbes or MDC....that would make me re-think any of my purchases

Okay, I have followed the last thread (somewhat) and now that I have officially passed the one year of DE shaving, I think I can handle it. I have several soaps / blades / aftershaves / brushes / etc to last the year.
The only things I want are:
Thater (or maybe a Simpsons)
QCS creams
I figure if I can last the whole year, then I can justify purchasing one (or both) of these items. Any LE's offered during this year will also be difficult to pass up, but I will try.
Will be sure to check in every now and again to see if I am still in.
Thanks,

"I have no intention of buying any shaving stuff at all in 2012". I wrote that, or something similar, in a recent post, stressing that it was not a resolution.
I can't see buying any soaps or creams in 2012. I may live long enough to use up what I've got if I take care of myself, and then have to buy a few more. If I live long enough to use up my entire stash of blades, just call me Methuselah. Not likely to buy any blades either.
There are a limited number of vintage razors, about four, that I might still buy if I can find them at my price. Trouble is, my price is probably lower than the going rate. I wouldn't turn down a great deal, but I might turn down a good one.
Luckily, brushes have never really caught my interest, and I'm happy with my inexpensive boars and low end badgers. No willpower required not to buy any more.
I've pretty much decided against trying a straight. There aren't any other categories of shaving stuff that interest me at all. No aftershaves, colognes, or whatnot.
When 2013 draws near, I'll check for my post in this thread, and see if I lived up to it. I started keeping a running tally of all shaving purchases at the beginning of 2011, and mean to keep it up indefinitely, so it will be easy to tell.

I'm all in for a 2012 Shave Sabbatical.....with some exceptions
Any B&B LE is a Granted Pass
Fountain Pens and Ink are not included
Any auctions for charity are excluded
What say everybody !!!!
I'm with Badenov. And in my case I'll add - Whatever I sell on the BST is allowed to be applied to shave purchases.
I will be replenishing my Clubman supply tomorrow, which should get me through 6 months, and I'll have to do that again in the summer; After Shave, Talc, and Hair Tonic (No Comments From The Peanut Gallery on that last one)

I have $75 in Amazon cards. I need at least one soap and new blades for my daughter's Christmas gift GEM Micromatic Clog Pruf (neat razor and I have some GEM blades I picked up at Walgreen's) and the Shick Injector I just recieved as a PIF (which I have already found to be VERY nice,). I have sufficient DE blades to get through a year easily, maybe add some Clubman to my stock of AS.
So, other than those 3 things, I'll sign up. It'll make the Admiral happy and my bank account will thank me too.

I hit Barber Depot today and to my great consternation, they were all out of the Country Club size Clubman. They nearly had to call EMS. So, although I feel like a traitor, I acquired "Coachman" which smells very much alike, if not identical, two Clubman talcs, a Clubman Hair Tonic and Shampoo (see above :001_tt2: ), and 15 of the Blue wrapped Personna "Medical" blades. I'm in for year 2. Last year, I felt compelled to break the rules for a bottle of Blue Floid when it was discontinued, and topped off with a tub of RazoRock XXX and 4 packs of Lord Blades (never again) to hit free shipping. After being in on the 3017 thread since May as well, and using up only 2 products in 7 months, I have realized just how pointless it is for me to buy more cream or soap. I have plenty of aftershave (thanks to Floid), so no worries there. The only possible shortage this year will be blades.
Leaves me plenty of money to spend on accessories for my new camera!

I am way more in than I would have thought a couple of weeks ago. I have one exception to list here, which is that I have funds earmarked for two brushes. I can't order them right now for a couple of reasons but will do so early in 2012. I also reserve the right to trade. Otherwise, yes, I'm in for a sabbatical. I have more soap, blades, and aftershave than I will ever use in my lifetime. I have two good DEs. Brushes as mentioned above plus my current brush (yes, just one badger at the moment). So no need to make purchases. And, with impending job changes and a move, yes, I ought to avoid buying stuff anyway.
One other caveat: I will be possibly buying some ingredients to try my hand at soapmaking later this year. It will be bath soaps to start, and in a sense, even when it's shave soap, it's really not shave-related consumerism per se. I don't know that this will happen, but if it does, it will happen with utmost restraint and beyond the initial outlay of cash expenditures will be determined by sales of the soaps I make.

12-29-2011, 09:44 PM
Well I have 2 or 3 years worth of soaps and creams. The last thing I need is another brush or razor. The only purchases I'm planning is a scuttle and blades, a couple hundred Astras. I usually shave daily and change blades every 3 days.

-jim+1 ... this is my resolution for 2012 as well.
I can't really afford to put any fresh money into the hobby at this time, so if I'm going to fund any purchases, it will have to come from selling off part of my collection. I've got duplicates of a lot of things, and items I bought and never used. Might as well get something out of them and recycle the funds.
Luckily, I've got just about everything I want by now ... and the items left on my wish list are either so rare or so expensive that I might never obtain them.
Then again, I told myself the same thing in 2011, and 2010, and 2009 ... and never got around to selling hardly anything.

OK, as long as we are having so many exceptions I think you guys have talked me into it.
So here are my exceptions:
If I sell something, 100% of the proceeds can be used to buy anything I want.
Blades, I usually only buy 100 at a time, so I will need some in 2012.
Brushes, I primarily only use one brush so I reserve the right to replace it or upgrade.
Creams, I'm very low on creams (doesn't matter that I have a 5 year supply of soaps, we're talking creams here).
Soaps, if I need to add something to an order to get free shipping on my blades it will probably be a soap.
Razors, I doubt that I will buy any, but reserve the right to snag a steal on any vintage razor that crosses my path (most likely any 40's style Superspeed that I find in the wild for under $5) also reserve the right to buy a new Weber razor.
Aftershaves, these are exempt at large, as they are not part of the actual shaving process and can be used completely separate from shaving (very dry skin here and constantly need to try new stuff).
Anything that is in danger of being discontinued or reformulated deserves preservation in my den as I see fit.
Anything that my wife buys for me.
There, I think that covers it. If I think of anything else I'll add it later. So count me in. :biggrin1:

Already posted in this thread and a Nib forum 2012 pen sabbatical one, but let me summarize.
Razors: Gem Jewel or Ever Ready Streamline and a Schick G2 if I can find them at a price that seems reasonable to me. Gillette Double Ring and/or a Darwin only at a steal of a rummage sale price.
Other shaving stuff: None
Fountain Pens: None
Inks: Only replacements for a few favorites if I run completely out of them.
Other ADs: My book purchasing is way ahead of my reading. I think I need to finish off at least a dozen books before I think of buying more.
Well, we'll see. Teasing about "failure on the horizon" aside, it's a good idea to acknowledge the problem, and decide when to take a breather.

Well i am on vacation here in Brisbane, QLD, and have thus far held strong on my vow to take part in the purchase sabbatical for 2012.
It is certainly a lot tougher here than back in Canberra, particularly with regard to fragrances. Not only are their department stores much larger with many more niche frags (almost every frag from tom ford, annick goutal, amouage, and about 12 other houses i had only read about) but there are also way more mainstream frags here for each house as compared to my home city.
The real kicker is that Brisbane has a Chanel boutique, where i have fallen in love with Sycomore. If I can last the full year, the 200mL will be my reward.
Let's see how this test of willpower goes.....

If I did the partial order correctly, it was going to cost me $75 (45GBP) to ship a single 100ml bottle of #89 from there to here? And I thought shipping razors from France to the USA was outrageous.

Not sure I have no desire to try anything out, but it has greatly diminished with the cream/soap rotation of various QCS, Tabac, Razorock XXX, and Proraso, plenty of Gillette TTO's to keep me on my toes, and a double handful of brushes. 2012 should be a year for net income on shaving related transactions as I thin the herd in the coming months.

For me it's to help me in making a concerted effort to use up at least SOME of what I've stockpiled, instead of buying more stuff. If you saw my software and fragrance collection you could appreciate that I've gone somewhat overboard in the last few years :S
I have more than enough shaving creams/soaps to use a different one for every week of the year, more colognes than there are US states, and about half as many (almost 30) aftershaves.....I have tried most of what I want to try, and am now in the process of whittling down the den to the handful of products that demand repeat purchases. Ok, it's going to be a very LARGE handful, but still :)

Aside from the 1305 (which is my soap-brush), I haven't used them!
I have owned the 'fat for a couple of years and have never tried it!!!
I'm going to use up my current TOBS sandalwood (nearly done, and the Chubby 2 should speed up the usage) and then try out my Musgo cream which I am also yet to use. It might be a little warm here for me to use MWF - it strikes me as one that would be better suited for the cold, dry winters here.

You, sir, are like the ex-drinking buddy who shows up on the recovering alcoholic's doorstep with a sixer of PBR. You are a bad man.
That said, they both look about the same, just depends on your preference of wood for the the handle. I agree with Greg - neither would be my choice - but if you primarily bowl lather creams I'm sure they're fine brushes.

Fragrances are my current Obsession (slight pun intended) and it was extremely tough to turn my back on Chanel's Sycomore, but I think I have enough quality juice to help me resist the temptations for a few months - I've barely even worn my Montales since using up the testers I got before ordering the bottles.

That's probably a fair assessment, mate. This is why we need inside men at the shaving companies, to find out what's coming up this year. That way people can make an informed decision on whether or not they want to participate in a purchase sabbatical :001_tt2:

Right. Well, I can tell you what I know. In 2012, Williams will introduce a reformulated soap, making new Williams into old new Williams, and vintage Williams into old old Williams. Thiers-Issard will find in their labyrinthine storage facility and release to the public the absolute very very last (they really mean it this time) of the old Le Grelot blanks. In February, Simpsons will announce a special limited edition brush made of only the absolute finest farm-raised Kobe badger hair to be marketed exclusively through the company's own site. This will not impact this year's sabbatical, however, as it will not actually be manufactured until sometime in 2014.

01-04-2012, 03:25 PM
If I make it out of January without ordering, I'll be doing better than the last two years. I see temptation down the road with Simpson tweeting last month that it is releasing their own brand of soap, cream, skin food, aftershave balm & pre-shave oil in 2012. If it's a hard soap or soft cream I might have trouble resisting.

I don't see myself having too much of a problem - fragrances are going to be my only weakness.
I was a little concerned thinking that I would have to primarily use my SE blades (>350) as I thought I only had small boxes of each DE blade (I have about 40 different boxes but I'd like to have a good supply of one reliable blade, like the RedIPs), but then I found my box of Lab Preps with about 80 left.
I think this will be a cakewalk.

I didn't realize that fragrances counted since they are used whether shaving or not. At least that is my excuse.:001_rolle
Oh the fragrance ban is just an extra challenge i added for myself. Like shaving gear, I have far too many frags that go unloved.
