Oh, yes you will. You're only a month into it. Around about December you'll realize the enormous amount of "savings" you've already achieved though wetshaving. You can be the first one in for 2013.:001_tt2:

Yes, but I've been wet shaving with my DE for over a year, it's only in the last month that I've registered on the site :001_tt2:

Looks like even Google is trying to help us Sabbaticalians out...here's the popup I got after clicking on the B/S/T this morning. Must be something really sweet listed! Seriously, though, any idea who I should notify? Harry (Mr. Scruffy) and/or Phil (luvmysuper)?

2. Barbasol Pacific Rush... Nope
3. SCS Refined... YES
4. Pinaud VIBR... YES
5. Avon "Wild Country" in a Porsche 911 bottle.... can't

236269

1. Gents Best SS... Replace with SCS "Refined

Finished so far this year:

1 puck Institut Karite Soap
1 puck Haslinger Marigold soap
1 puck SCS Refined Soap
1 Travel tub CF Lavender Cream
1 Small tube Coates Rose Cream

I will definitely get the first three (or a different scent) again. Creams just don't float my boat, so the CF won't be replaced and the Coates is currently out of production.

Oh, and still in.

I finished off a tub of XXX, but, fortunately, was able to trade for a near-new tub to replace it. I'm not sure I'd still be in if I hadn't found one, with all the talk of XXX going away. I've started using creams for a week at a time, and have noticed the gradual reduction more than when I'd use something different every day.

Sill in, though!

Oh my....today was a real challenge. Got a little wild with the straight today and had a few weepers. Reached for the alum block, Bob the cat decided it was time to play let's weave in and out of the legs. Wet hands, crazy cat, not a great hold of the block= 16 pieces on the floor. No problem....I'll get my reserve....SURPRISE...no reserve. Needless to say 2 Alum blocks are on the list and the pieces are residing on papertoweling in a bowl.

I'M STILL IN !!!!!

Still here. Not much to say when we don't have new purchases to rave about.

Mostly I'm trying to plan exactly how I'm going to stock up once I break, or in the couple of weeks between the 2012 and 2013 sabbaticals.

I'm still going strong, though I'll be heading OS for my annual holiday around July/August, so will likely pick up a few frags while I'm away.

So that would mean (assuming that I do break) I will have failed my own no-frag purchase, but would that mean I've failed this Shave Sabbatical?

From all accounts, I'm one of the few to do a frag purchase sabbatical, and it's not a mandatory part of the Shave Sabbatical. What are everyone's thoughts?

Never got a ruling on this one. Anybody?

I have wondered what I would do if a favorite product was discontinued, such as AoS soaps. There is still plenty of good stuff out there, so I would just move on. That said, I can appreciate the difficulty of wrestling with it, so Vlad, I have a very lightly used stick of IM, which is yours if you want it.

I hear ya, Price. I'd be a goner for sure if I had been picked for the trials on the QCS ASB's, 'cuz I'm dodging bullets as it is with that product. I'm going to do the Minimalist May and see if that assuages the itch at all. I'd really like to make it through the first half.

Mosswood is on the Do Not Trade list, besides I think I only have half a bottle which I'm using very sparingly. I think, because I didn't notice any in my AS stash in the basement. Now if you want Oriental Spice for Jickey, I'll gladly trade.

It was a rough weekend for me. Friday night I got a haircut only to find that my barber has really increased his stock of shaving products. I knew I couldn't get out of there without a new razor, but then they gave me one just so I would try it and report back to him what I thought of it.

Saturday I wound up bidding on eBay for a Slim and a Super Adjustable, but got outbid.

Sunday I stumbled across the only l'Occitane shop within hundreds of miles, right next to Bath & Body Works in Omaha. I couldn't resist the shelf full of Cade products, but they are for my nephews college graduation present, so I'm still in, right?

Just keep glliding along. Had a P.160 jones that almost got me after sampling the traded for chunk for the first time (worried Italian Barber's stock would be gone), but fortunately the trade included Cella and Vitos Coconut, and at first blush I didn't notice a big enough difference to break the Sabbatical.

After a May of naught but Cella, I'm hoping this hankering recedes.

Now starts the long midsection of the marathon, without the promise of future glory at the start or the impending satisfaction of accomplishment as the finish line nears. The "one foot after another" soul-crushing slog that causes one to question not just the task undertaken, but existence itself, a grinding monotony unpunctuated by any spark of new life.

Or, we place a big order with WCS or the Italian Barber and be done with it!

I have mentioned before that there never has been a single post really outlining the rules and exceptions for the 2012 Shaving Products Purchase Sabbatical. This year started with a post stating "Same rules as 2011" and last year started with a post stating "Same rules as 2010." Going through the 2010 thread it became apparent that rules just kind of evolved from an earlier lone wolf effort by Vlad. I'd like to resolve that.

I would like to get two volunteers to help me write up a full set of rules offline, then we'll present them in a separate thread to solicit comments. Any volunteers or protests to this idea?

Hmmm...if you make it all official like that, then it becomes less fun and more of a contest. This was about each person setting a goal or personal limits and trying to stick to them. Brian, out of his own volition and generosity, volunteered a prize based on a very loose set of conditions.

I mean, if you want to write down rules, I won't oppose it, but it seems like a lot of effort.

I think the general rule is that buying new shave gear (for oneself) is the general prohibition. The idea was born simply of a realization that one has acquired a ridiculously large amount of "stuff", but that it seems impossible to stop buying said stuff without some sort of organized peer pressure. The universally accepted exception is B&B LE items, although I think that well may be dry now. The only thing driving a need for "rules", and necessarily the adjudication thereof, would be Brian's very generous challenge, so really I'd say that, if anyone feels that specifically delineated rules are in order, it should be Brian's prerogative to dictate them if he so chooses. Otherwise, this is simply an exercise in self-control, and the only judge anyone should need would be his own conscience.

Gentlemanly Restraint; that term implies that the rules are unwritten, since the social contract is with oneself and the others are there to provide encouragement vs judgment.

When I collapsed in February, in spectacular fashion I might add, the social contact with myself was broken and I informed my support group. Those that have purchased for others or bought grooming products / toiletries not directly used for shaving remained true to the spirit of the Sabbatical, IMHO.

I like to think of it as playing an individual game with a group of other folks - like golf.

I thought I would pop my head in and say, "Still in!" and it looks like I may be in for longer than I thought. I had originally thought that I would be out in the Fall when I would need to buy more blades, but lo and behold, I found almost 50 blades I didn't even know I had - good ones too! No shortage of software, either, despite relegating a pound or so of Klar Kabinett to the shower due to it disagreeing with my face.

Well into my second year, no need to crack. Of course, there is the problem of using my AD money on other things like a new camera and guitar amp.

Fail #4, I think: new line from ItalianBarber. :tongue_sm Hello? Hello? Anybody here?

AAAAaaaauuuuugggghhhh! This one may do me in. I was already worried about it...

Some background: the 16yo stepson has been bugging me for several nights about teaching him to shave as he has a barely discernible dusting of something resembling the down of a baby chick plaguing his heretofore spotless upper lip. His passion for removing said dusting is only barely exceeded by Steven Seagal's passion for whupping up on the bad guy in a B-movie, and he wore me down last night. He wasn't interested in the DE, so we walked through pre-shave prep, etc., and while I offered to help him with making lather, the bad guys had to go NOW! I showed him how to use a gel and a two-blade disposable over the space of a half hour or so, and he spent the rest of the night faceturbating. Anyhow, with his mom's blessing, I'm going to get him Joe's Cella/Omega 10049/Alum/styptic for his birthday coming up in a couple of weeks, and it'd be silly not to get free shipping, especially with the new RR line, right?

Crap. I was hoping to make it through half the year. Still in, but my fingertips are slipping.

I know I haven't been very vocal in this thread, but I am still in. Was worried about running out of Tabac as it is one of my top soaps (the other is MdC) and I have been using the puck for about 14 months. However, I just popped the puck out of the dish and saw there is plenty left. I only shave 3 days a week (M, W, & F) which means I don't use a lot of soap. This is just more confirmation that I don't need to buy anything yet.

Although, I will probably run out of my preferred aftershave in about 2 more months...

I've been doing this sabbatical for almost 6 months and you wanna know how much stuff I've polished off?

1 stinking puck of soap. That is it.

I was buying Williams and VDH from local shops on an as needed basis and not paying much attention to how long they lasted until SSAD hit late last year. Suddenly I had 8 soaps open and nothing seemed to be getting used up. Now it's driving me up the wall as I try kill a few products and start using others from beginning to end and track how long it takes to use each of them. To clear the decks I spent a month using up an almost finished puck of VDH and a couple of weeks using the little ring of Williams around the bottom of my mug. The new pack of Mama Bear Aged Spice is probably going to last three months...

Hopefully more inventory will be used up. I could also do this for 3 years and have way more than I needed.
And here I thought I was going overboard when I had less than two years of soap on hand.

Well sir's... it's now on a count down. The sirens song of a new handle for my Damaskeene is strong... and of course, if I am going to fall off the wagon for a handle might as well get a matching brush. The handle is in the development stage... so it could be a couple of weeks yet. Stay tuned.

what is this? MWF with olive oil?

To make it more difficult to lather (it's not real).

And here I thought I was going overboard when I had less than two years of soap on hand.

Jeez, only 2 years worth? What are you doing in this thread? :tongue_sm
Forgive me, for I was a newbie at the time. I saw this thread and it seemed the thing to do at the time. Then I saw photos from the guys with REAL ADs, but I was already committed to this thread. At one point I had to recount my blades to be sure I would have enough blades to finish the year. If that wasn't a sign I didn't belong here I don't know what would be... But I hang in here for I have promised myself one great big order of soaps, blades and AS in December or Janurary.

Isn't resistance just a sign that you need to change blades?

True, but that adds to the challenge.

Still in!

I might try the trick of hiding some of my inventory so I can focus on using up some of the other stuff.

Funny how I want "less stuff" and only a year ago I wanted to try everything. Getting a better idea of what I like with time. Someday I'll have it all boiled down to some favorites.

Still in.

I've been trying to work through my inventory; I've already finished one cream this year and only a couple weeks until I finish a soap. At this rate, I could do this sabbatical for the next 4-6 years and not need any supplies.

Still in, but the Santa Maria Novella is but a sliver at the bottom of the tub. We're mostly moved in to the new house, but the shave den is still missing one important ingredient... THE SINK! Roughing it a little, but will pick up the sink on Thursday and should have it installed after work on Friday or Saturday morning.

Hmmm. Wouldn't a sink count as shaving gear? :001_tongu

Six Months are almost gone. Six months have almost passed us by. And I can tell you some of you are dangerously close to caving in, to yielding to the temptation of a new soap, or cream, or brush.

I say NAY! Be Strong! Courage!!

If I'd stayed up late last night, I'd be out. The long-searched-for 2009 LE butterscotch made an appearance on BST in the wee hours of this morning, and at a quite decent price. Luckily (for my sabbatical, not for me) someone else got to it first.

Dang! Just found this thread. Too late for this year. Maybe next. Not making any promises, mind you. Since I am a born again newbie, perhaps I need to show some restraint before I let things get out of hand. Am something of a minimalist when it comes to razors, will likely add a TTO to double my razor collection to 2, am trying to narrow my blade selection to maybe 2 kinds, rarely use aftershave, will be getting a boar brush soon to add to my badger best. My weakness is soaps. Not crazy about creams, will likely not replace once mine is gone. If only there weren't so many great soap flavors! I only have one face to shave, so I'm trying to be grown up about this all.

Am very glad to be back to wetshaving; it's a great improvement over cartridges. As for saving money...if I live long enough I may just come out ahead. :wink1:

Two years ago is definitely before January 1st. The DE89L has definitely slowed down my desire to lust after other razors. I might even get another some day for a spare.

Okay, I've a bit of a dilemma. I'm all straights, never used a DE. SWMBO has been interested but hesitant for some time, but finally caved and tried it - and got a great shave - although she did mention several times that it felt awkward and uncomfortable in her hand. I know a lot of that is the "new & dangerous" aspect, and she'd get used to it eventually, but I think a nice DE would really set the hook, if you know what I mean. Previous purchases bought as gifts were given a pass, but this kinda blurs the line a bit.

What say you? Would I be cashing in my sabbatical by buying my wife a razor? A lifetime free of eye rolls and snarky comments might make it worth it anyway, but I figured I'd put it up for the judges first. :biggrin1:

I'm officially out after this weekend.....I went out good though. I bought a tradere handle and also a nickel plated FaTip piccolo model. I figured either the new proraso, or the new DR Harris Windsor would be what got me, but apparently my affection for the OC variety was too much. Oh well, June is better than I thought I would do!!! Kinda feels good too, now I can buy some more stuff I don't really need!! :) you guys have a wonderful rest of the year!

+1 - The only way I see this even becoming remotely questionable, and would fall to the level of cheap sniping, is if she doesn't take to the new razor and you should happen to become DE curious prior to the end of the sabbatical. Even in that case I'd be more inclined to argue that only your initial intent is what matters.
