I'm faltering. Fragrances will be my undoing.

I'll confess that the lack of o/s shipping was the only thing that kept me in this sabbatical when I saw 25% off the Trumpers and TOBS lines @ Shop Londons. If they shipped to Oz (and at a reasonable rate) I would have been out quicker than you can say Eucris!

Well Gent's ....in looking closer I see 2 full packs and 2 blades.

1 blade every 2 weeks. Easy to do, and will fill in with extra straight shaves.

No question of staying on the wagon !!!!!!

I'm in it to win it !!!!

Well, I use Single Edge razors, and I might have some Crystals lying around...

Of course, I think the worst time will be summer, when the call of the menthol shaving creams and soaps is the loudest, when the reviewers wax poetic about the strength of the menthol, and how their faces almost froze. Oh yes, that will be difficult.

I'm actually amazed that I've made it this long without buying a fragrance at all.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone for bombing out, as it's only sheer foolish pride that's keeping me in at the moment. I know I'm a weak, weak individual, and the more people that bail out before me, the better I'll feel about bombing out mid-year.

Well, still strong since I was able to make a trade for a nearly new tub of XXX.

The first week XXX popped into the rotation this year, the bottom of the tub was showing through by Sunday, then italianbarber.com posted the possibility of XXX going away, and I came close, close, close to breaking, but did not. With the trade, and since I only use it every five weeks for a week at a time, I should be good for the year now. Sure made it easier to watch that black hole at the bottom of the tub get bigger over the last two days.

Well, yes I do have a few but they are all partials and only one small bottle of Aqua Velva that is nearly full.

I'm still in too - despite trying some great frags up in Sydney last weekend.

I am at a loss to find why nobody else (that I show it to) loves Muscs Koublai Khan, and my next 80's powerhouse will likely be Givenchy Gentleman.

Was pretty underwhelmed by a lot of the Frederic Malle frags, but the Le Labo Bergamotte is one of the finest fragrances I have had the pleasure of testing.

It's not easy....

Is it possible to join this thing this late in the game? I have been wet shaving for 5 months, and I think I have contracted some form of mental illness. I was a wet shaver until Christmas 1974, and restarted last November after reading about it on a guitar website I frequent(FDP). Since then I have bought enough razors, blades, soaps, creams, etc. to last several life times. Just this morning I bought a razor handle and 2 tubs of soap on Amazon. Help me!!!!!

Comments like the one above have made me realize that I wasn't nearly as overstocked on everything as I once thought. Back in November, well before joining B&B, I decided to hold off on purchases for a while. My thinking at the time was that having enough supplies to get me through 2012 meant I had plenty and should curtail my spending. It just kind of stops being fun when you have to count the blades in the drawer to determine if you can last the year or not...

I'm strongly considering it now. Give me a week to consider what exceptions I might want. I know, at a minimum, the exceptions will be:

Boar brush - once I figure out what I want. I only have a Vulfix 660S super badger, a Shea Moisture, and a Turkish "no. 6" horse hair brush.
Vintage razors found in the wild - I only want a couple but buying them of B/S/T is just too easy. Much more fun finding them at auctions, flea markets or thrift stores.
Quality shaving cream - I only have Bigelow and Maca Root shave creams. I need...ok, want...one or two really good ones like T&H or Nancy Boy.
After shaves splashes - I don't have much, just two cheap splashes and a handful of samples. I have plenty of ASBs though.
Samples of any new new soap flavors by Mystic Water.
Anything traded for, or bought with funds from selling, my existing shaving gear or software.

For me the big thing is no more soaps, blades, or razors.

For me, that's kinda the whole idea of the Sabbatical, and I would consider it a rousing success if I had to break it because I was out of a category. By that, I mean that I was out of all soaps and creams, not out of a particular soap or cream. Basically, we need a razor, a blade, a brush, a lather, and water (let's say, for the sake of argument, that after shave is optional, though my thought holds even if it isn't). None of us are likely to "run out" of razors or brushes , so that really leaves lather and blades. I, like you, have no desire to count blades to make it to the end of the year, or to try to stretch my soaps/creams for the last month to the point that my shaving experience suffers.

To summarize, even though I would break the Sabbatical by buying something, the fact that I was breaking it because I needed something rather than wanted something would make me consider it a success. Maybe "Wanting to need some shaving goods" would make a good rotating title!

There are probably 45-50 blades left as well as some carts and disposables should I run into too many dud blades. I'm actually fine for shaving supplies, but just barely. It's the willpower to resist the AD's and stand idly by as the cupboard gets bare is the problem.

That sounded good when I signed on, but now that I'm facing the reality of it I'm not so sure!

It kind of reminds me of the Halloween episode of Cheers that starts with Norm asking Coach or Woodie if they wanted to see something really scary and he shows them the bottom of his empty beer mug. I guess I'm a soapaholic that doesn't want to see the bottom of his shaving mug.

Well, I will certainly confess that I went on an all out trade search for RR XXX when the bottom of the tub showed through on my only stock, and was able to secure another tub for some QCS samples. I wouldn't have bought any, though, if I couldn't have traded for it.

I'm expecting to be able to more sharply define my wants versus needs by the end of this year, and will probably be very selective about what I stock in soft goods in the future. I'll feel less concerned about more expensive soaps/creams simply because I now am learning how long they'll last when used in a 4-5 product rotation for a week at a time.

I thought about a Lenten sabbatical of my own, and even considered it as a separate thread, but then I stumbled across this thread and signed up.

I went back to carts for Lent, partly to make sure my meager DE blade supply held out for the year. I'm looking forward to getting back to my DE razors to see if I can't pick up on some subtle differences between my several similar razors. Some thought went into using Barbasol for the duration, but I'm no zealot.

I like your plan of stocking up for the 2013 Sabbatical. I've been thinking about how many supplies I could lay in if I spent the 2012 and 2013 budgets all in one order on New Years Eve...

Was thinking the same thing, Lou. Take advantage of any post-Christmas sales, stock up on my wants list for 2013, then crank'er back up for 2013.

Only purchases today were a quart of ice cream and one lottery ticket. If I hit the $540 million I'm out.

Be sure to post the packing list!

I was just going to have John at West Coast Shaving post his entire inventory, that would have been about right.

Still in. I'm in no danger of running out of anything, so I've got no excuses or exceptions. It feels good to have gone an entire quarter without buying any shaving gear, but at the rate I'm going, I'll have to be in the sabbatical for another 5 years until I'm out of supplies completely. :blushing:

Still in this thing. :yesnod:

Joining beginish on April 9th for the "La Toja Manantiales/Rover one brush-one soap" challenge should take my mind off even thinking about making a purchase. Here goes nothing.

Still hanging in and it's getting a little easier. No dreamcarting at all during March. I did discover that I only have 4 blades left for the Injector I keep in my gym locker, but I can always switch that out for a DE razor.

I'm still going strong, though I'll be heading OS for my annual holiday around July/August, so will likely pick up a few frags while I'm away.

So that would mean (assuming that I do break) I will have failed my own no-frag purchase, but would that mean I've failed this Shave Sabbatical?

From all accounts, I'm one of the few to do a frag purchase sabbatical, and it's not a mandatory part of the Shave Sabbatical. What are everyone's thoughts?

Do the "kingfisher exemptions" apply this year?
I.E. From the 2010 Shave Purchase Sabbatical thread "sell things to fund new purchases" and "money given as a gift may be spent"

I have heaps of exemptions that I can use any time I want. I started off doing this as a lark, but I just may make it through the whole year.

+1 with the exception of the straight. I am going with the 23c and Red IPs. Suffice it to say, I am still in. Not sure if I have ever been this deep into the new year and still remained in this contest.

Yeah, I wandered in there a short while ago, too. The wife says I can buy a pipe this weekend, as I cannot find the one I had about 12 years ago (I will probably find it after I buy a new one :001_smile). I cannot wait to start smoking good tobacco again (cigarettes are garbage that I must get out of my life)

Oh, yes you will. You're only a month into it. Around about December you'll realize the enormous amount of "savings" you've already achieved though wetshaving. You can be the first one in for 2013. :001_tt2:
