Oh the fragrance ban is just an extra challenge i added for myself. Like shaving gear, I have far too many frags that go unloved.

Whew! I'm still in then after 5 days. Yes!!!

What say you?!

I bet you can count on the generosity of your fellow members to get you through, Geordon.

No problem. I already have that site bookmarked. The Iwasaki I want is (thankfully?) out of stock, anyway. :o16:

I just started with all this stuff in September and I've already spent enough for a lifetime. Although...if I average out my shaving expenditures for the past three months, then put aside that amount of money on a monthly basis for a whole year....I could probably buy myself a new car in early 2013! This sabbatical thing might actually work!

LOL yeah, I've got that one bookmarked, too. Oakville is only 30 minutes away in friendly traffic. But I think I already have enough straights to hold me, plus a bunch in the restoration bin. Does this sabattical include restoration supplies? I mean, I already have the razors, so it would be a crime to leave them unrestored.

Okay there seems to be some confusion....so lets revisit the rules

1. No shaving supplies....hardware or software.. to include but not limited to....
a.Razors (DE, SE, straights, etc NOPE...sharpened clams, obsidian, knives are allowed)
b. Soaps, Creams, etc NOPE....canned Goo (shudder) is allowed.
c. Brushes.....NOPE
d. Strops etc....NOPE
e. Blades NOPE, I just did a quick calculation... I have enough for the next 38 years...Now if somebody were to gift some to you....that's OK except the SWMBO can't be the source....too much influence

Now if that once in a lifetime buy shows up.... like a Toggle for 15 cents or a Bill Ellis straight....well lets talk about it.

B&B LE and B&B Auctions...etc are given a automatic bye.

What say everybody ???

Hmm selling something to buy something? I won't be doing that - I'd consider that a purchase of shaving goods, which would fly in the face of a purchase sabbatical. Just going on the plain English interpretation I'd assume that selling and trading are fine, but if you include cash in that trade, or you obtain something for cash (despite whether or not you obtained that cash by selling some other shaving gear) then it's a purchase.

I'm going to try to abstain from all purchases, sales and trades for as long as possible, but I think the real question is....how do people not already have enough supplies to last them at least a year? How will these people function when the shavepocalypse is upon us?

I think that's a fair representation, Brian.

Trades should be allowed, just no purchasing - no matter how you obtained the funds.

I think the odds are fairly slim that more than a couple of us would actually be in danger of running out of anything (we wouldn't be doing this if that were the case, right?), but in the off chance that it does happen - say, Geordon's blades - I'm pretty certain one of us can hook him up if he wants to keep fighting the good fight. It's kinda like a support group (hey, just like Fight Club! - "The first rule of shave sabbatical is... you do not talk about shave sabbatical.")

Ooops! I'm out!

Over lunch I bought a Red&Black cased NEW for $6 that I'm going to give to my wife to sell in her space. And one of the sellers there told me he would bring part of his collection in for sale as his wife and he are reducing "inventory".

I'm just going to try and not buy any shave related stuff off of BST and ebay. I think I can do that. Baby steps...

I'm certain down to the marrow of my bones that we would do the right thing. During WW2, sure was different:

Hitler's helpmates. This fine lush growth has been caused by the razor blade hoarder, who has salted away so many blades that more unselfish citizens are forced to remain as nature intended. If they were ladies, the circus would be interested; as it is, they are merely two hapless Americans in search of a shave.

Now I'm glad I didn't formally commit to this. I picked up a couple of items in the week between Christmas and New Year so even though they are yet to arrive I am technically in solidarity with the folks who are participating.

I don't think I could have made it with these rules though. I have plenty of blades, but I entered the year with single pucks/tubs of my soap rotation, that is only one puck/tub each of Tabac, MWF, Cella, DRH Arlington and Proraso with a single stick of Irisch Moos to supplement them. Without replacement I don't think I could manage this challenge.

If those were all about new, I betcha you could. Even if you shave every single day, that'd only be about 70 per. The only one that might even be close would be the Cella.

Got over a week's worth of shaves (mostly BBS or near BBS) from a Feather. That's a first for me from ANY blade. I believe it is due to the combination of Santa Maria Novella and the EJ89L razor. I doubt that the SMN will make the year. So at this rate I could easily go the year with 50 Feathers.

PROBLEM: I only have one(1) Feather left.

The rest of my blades are Red IP's. I'll have to see if the same combination of razor and lather yields a week from one of those. I usually toss them after two(2) shaves, but with SMN I'm sure I can get more. I don't believe I have any other lathering products that work as well as SMN at weakening the whiskers for shaving.

So I think I will milk out the SMN as long as I can. When it is gone, I have several premium soaps that will get me through the year, but I really don't want to wait that long to replace the SMN.

01-07-2012, 12:50 PM
OK, as long as we are having so many exceptions I think you guys have talked me into it.

So here are my exceptions:

If I sell something, 100% of the proceeds can be used to buy anything I want.
Blades, I usually only buy 100 at a time, so I will need some in 2012.
Brushes, I primarily only use one brush so I reserve the right to replace it or upgrade.
Creams, I'm very low on creams (doesn't matter that I have a 5 year supply of soaps, we're talking creams here).
Soaps, if I need to add something to an order to get free shipping on my blades it will probably be a soap.
Razors, I doubt that I will buy any, but reserve the right to snag a steal on any vintage razor that crosses my path (most likely any 40's style Superspeed that I find in the wild for under $5) also reserve the right to buy a new Weber razor.
Aftershaves, these are exempt at large, as they are not part of the actual shaving process and can be used completely separate from shaving (very dry skin here and constantly need to try new stuff).
Anything that is in danger of being discontinued or reformulated deserves preservation in my den as I see fit.
Anything that my wife buys for me.

There, I think that covers it. If I think of anything else I'll add it later. So count me in. :biggrin1:

Exceptions???Exceptions?? We don't need no steenking exceptions!

There were two threads, but they have been combined.

Repeating the same action over and over while expecting different results......

I don't understand? Why would I want to do this?

You wouldn't!!!!

Wow. Not buying any shaving gear for a whole year.

You must already have all of the gear you'll ever need.

That means you're probably very knowledgeable about shaving gear.

Which makes you the perfect people to help me with my gear-related questions. Hee-hee-hee...

If I were to buy ONE of these brushes, which one should it be?

50% off amouage? WHERE????

It was here in Oz - David Jones (a department store) had them all 50% off. We pay a premium for things in Oz, so the original prices were about $450 for the bottles, but it's still a hell of a saving.

I tried the Amouage Gold Man (among others) and really didn't like it, but there were some great scents in the range.

Nine days in, I'm discovering that I really like the concept of the sabbatical. Not for forever, of course, but a year at a time is certainly doable. Instead of bouncing from scent to scent in sample packs, I'm using one cream for an entire week, changing only brushes to see how the cream performs with different types. Last week was QCS Green Irish Tweed, and I'm finding the scent of the cream varies slightly to my nose from day to day; I don't know if it has something to do with how wet the lather is (wetter seems to smell a bit stronger to me), the brush I used, how stuffed up my nose is that morning, or what, but it's nice to discover little differences in the same cream from day to day. I never would have picked up on that with the constant variety.

This week is QCS Queen Charlotte (thanks Crixus! I bought this tub just a few hours before the Sabbatical started), and it is particularly nice.

I'm sure by the end of the year I'll be wanting to get my paws on something new, but for now, I'm just going to stop and smell the lather.

jdto
01-09-2012, 05:59 AM
I will definitely have to work through all the samples I have, as there are too many right now. By not acquiring anything new for a year, I should certainly be able to determine what my favourites are. If I last a full year, of course :scared:

Count me in as well. I've been "settling in" over the last year. I'm a one-brush man (Duke 3) and a one-razor man (Futur). Now I'm working on finding my blade. For Christmas I was given (at my suggestion!) an "Everything" blade sampler from WCS. That should last me through 2012. I'm looking forward to a year of experimentation with new blades trying to find "the one".

I also have a rotation of seven soaps that I have been working through. I'm committed to not buying any new soaps (not even replacements) until I've whittled that down to maybe three or four. The bottom of the container is now visible on my Col. Conk Bay Rum, so I'm making progress.

I just ordered a tube of 444 from Vintage Scent to replace a bottle of Fitness for Man ASB that is running out. I'll probably also replace my jar of Proraso Pre- and Post when that is done. If my Superior 70 runs out I'll replace that too. But other than that I'm on the wagon for 2012.

Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy. No problems here.

In fact, it's getting easier by the day. I mentioned earlier how much I'm enjoying spending a week with one QCS scent instead of skipping around, and I expanded that to using one razor and blade combo for the week instead of my normal "three shaves and can the blade, swap the razor" (and I mean, use the same blade for the whole week...). At this rate, I'll have to join the 2013 Sabbatical to draw down my inventories to a reasonable level.

Seriously, my fifth shave this morning with the Aristocrat Jr/Astra SS combo was just as smooth and comfortable as the first. I'm going to try going to a new blade every Monday, instead of every three shaves.

Yes it is... and I'm still using the same Feather blade. This is totally new territory for me, as I have never used a blade for an entire week even, much less two. Could it be the EJ89 that is allowing me to get so many shaves from a single blade? It seems to rinse better than my 40's SS, perhaps that is the key to keeping an edge for a long time.

That is a shockingly long lasting blade. If I shave WTG, XTG, ATG once a day for four days, the last day my ATG is bad under my chin with a Feather. (dragging, weepers) I don't know why that is, but I get cut if I push it. I can push a couple other types of blade out a shave or two more, but Feathers just won't do it for me. Too bad too, I really love the first three shaves with one. I know blades are YMMV.

Let me ask, are you shaving every day? And what is your regimen like? (how many passes, what type of pass, ect.) Inquiring minds want to know...:001_smile

Daily shaver and typically 2-3+ passes with blade buffing. I am totally astounded by this as my usual usage is only 2-3 shaves per blade regardless of the brand. I only had one bad shave, somewhere between shave #4-6 and I blamed that on being in a hurry with no prep, no blood, just not very close.

I can't remember if I skipped a day or not, but even so, this is over two weeks now on the same blade and I am still getting great shaves, DFS for sure and most were BBS. Even today after my usual 3-4 J hooking, blade buffing passes under my jaw/right ear I reached up and rubbed ATG and nearly fell over at the feel of a BBS finish.

All I know is I have a whole new respect for Feathers and need to get more.

I have some Red IP's and only one Feather left after this one.

Part of my steel like resolve must be coming from the knowledge that I still have orders placed last year that still have not been delivered.

I thought being in the wilds of Australia meant that I got everything weeks after I ordered it, seems like it happens elsewhere too.

The last two items I ordered were in the last week of December and one of them arrived early last week (9th) but one last item is still on it's way. :-(

:yikes: Almost 90% of your stuff is untouched? I can honestly say that I have a total of three things in my stash that are not opened yet: A replacement of Coates Tea Tree & Rosemary cream, a tube of Speick cream, and a tube of Goredj "deluxe lather" (or whatever its, the brick red one).

Of course, the only thing that I have used up at this point is a full Musgo lime glyce soap and most (~90%) of a small jar of Proraso Pre/Post. I need to use more product when I shave. ;)

Timmy Dee

Yeah, I'm still using the tub of TOBS Sandalwood I bought two-and-a-half years ago when I started wetshaving. I've used up a couple of artisan soaps along the way (Pirates Cove and HoneyBee Spa) and quite a few samples, but that's about it.
This is exactly why the sabbatical was a good idea for me - I had already decided to do one before I read this thread, but seeing other blokes do it too is a good motivator.
I just need to decide what to use next, as the TOBS has only a week's worth of shaves left in it.....maybe that tube of Proraso that has been half-used for years (it's older than the TOBS).

Holy stinkin cow!! The only reason I have 2 soaps that are unopened is because I bought 3 old formula TOBS lavenders before they were discontinued. I just traded the only other unopened soap that I had, a vintage Surrey, for some desperately needed Feather blades to see me through the year.

Brushes - 28
Blades - 3500+
Creams - 15?
Soaps - 30+ <- this number includes croaps and shave sticks.
Razors - 27
Aftershave Products - 12ish

I will tell you what... you guys that are going to back off for a bit, I will just let you live through me for the next few months. I am off to a slow start, only spending 37 bucks in the last three days. Luckily, I have a VERY understanding wife ( only married for 14 months now, but who is counting).... being that she likes to frequent the Clinique counter at Macy's, she has NO ROOM to get upset over shaving products. A bottle of her 'oil scrub' is 30 bucks, and it is only 150ml bottle. Yeah- ok.

See, I have it pretty good. I geared up for this over the last 6 months. I would keep the nasty picky stuff on my face and she has sensative skin. I did my first DE shave and I think she liked it more than I did. Now I see her trolling the best shave website asking what I want... I love this woman!

Well, that is a tough call. My problem is I like ALL my brushes. :tongue_sm

That being said, when I was pondering the last brush purchase of 2011 (planning on the 2012 sabbatical) it came down to a second Shavemac D01 or a second Morris & Forndran Blonde Badger.

I went with the Shavemac in a fan shaped knot but the M&Fs are just superb. To round out the trio... ugh... I'd really struggle.

Understood with the Proraso and summer--I started wet shaving (with Proraso...) last May, and there's something perfect about the menthol level of that product here in the hot and humid Deep South. Maybe you've got some Vostok in that pile of creams? There's a big ol' cold slap to the kisser for summer!

My wife has always been slightly amused with my little hobby, so thankfully I don't have to worry about getting killed, but after just over a year I've accumulated enough shaving accoutrements to last until Armageddon.
