I was at Ulta tonight with my wife while she was picking up some makeup. I didn't realize they have a men's section. I've only actually been there a couple times. They have a few brands of what looks to be like high end shaving cream there. The one that stuck out in my mind was Jack Black Shaving Cream. Has anyone heard of/used this stuff? I didn't buy any, but it seems pretty nice. It's paraben free and all natural.

I think it is pretty good, but for the price you can get better. If you are looking to buy something locally, though, it is a pretty good bet. Since you are in Houston, you may want to check out the Central Market, they have Musgo Real for like $13 which is a lot better and cheaper than the Jack Black. I will probably not be buying the Jack Black cream again. I do like their "Beard Lube" for a pre-shave kind of like the Proraso Pre-Post cream.

Even better, since you're in Houston, check out The British Isles in Rice Village, and Kuhl Linscomb next to whole foods on west alabama.

British Isles has Truefitt, Trumpers, and TOBS, along with some MWF, C&E and EJ stuff. Few razors too. Super cool little store and the guy that runs the place is super nice.

Kuhl Linscomb has some higher end stuff.. Santa Maria Novella, Aqua di Parma, but also the low end too with the entire Musgo line. This store is crazy. They have stuff that doesn't even make sense, I pretty much just go for Frags and skin care/shaving supplies. Cool place, weird selection.

Jack Black shave cream doesn't get much love here (check out the reviews), but I like it. The scent is clean and medicinal, full of juniper and eucalyptus. It's slick but not very cushiony. Bottom line is that there are better choices in its price range. I'm finishing up a tub, so I've used it for quite awhile, and I don't know if I'll be buying any more.

Pahaha, I just reread my post and this sounds like the weakest endorsement ever.

Hmmm... Good to know. Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear from some of my local Houston guys. I've never been to any of those places. I will definitely be checking them out.

As mentioned there are cheaper products out there. I have some and usually shave with it once a week. And I like it! Jack Black + my Pro 48 boar = great lather.
It's about the only shave creme I can pickup locally without having to order online.
It has some bad reviews on here but in my opinion the new formula is a lot better.

I started out using Jack Black as it easy to buy here in North Texas. It is expensive and at $15 a tube, but it is a nice product. I have since discovered much better in my opinion when it comes to shave cream. I suggest going to Bath and Body Works and buying some CO Bigelow Cream. It is made by Proraso and it is just $10 for a large tube or $5 for a small size.

I haven't used the cream, but I am extremely happy with the Beard Lube.

Is their shave/face soap any good?

I hate Jack Black shaving cream. I find it to be drying and I could never get it to lather well. There are many other products which are far cheaper and perform far better.

I actually like the tub of Jack Black shave cream pretty well. I have a few tubs of T&H, Acca Kappa, and C&E. While it may not be at the top of the list, I enjoy using it - and sometimes I think it prepares my face even better than some of the others I have.

Like Barbasol in a can.

Thanks,

I use the Beard Lube only. Great for that last minute shave in the morning!

The shave soap is not very good at all...nearly impossible to lather. The one product I love from them is their All Over Hair & Body Wash; one of the nicest smelling/longest lasting scents I have ever used for showering.

I have the Supreme Cream and didn't care for it much. As others said it doesn't lather the greatest. My container is about 90% full, I switched to TOBS lemon/lime.

I do like the Cooling gel aftershave though. IMHO it works very well. A little goes along way and has lavender in it.

Jack Black is pricey stuff!! For the money there are better creams out there. That being said, I use Jack Black all over body wash in the shower each a.m. and their face wash and double duty moisturizer each p.m. and I really like those products alot! IMHO Jack Black also has the BEST lip alms known to man.. The lemon one is great.

Jack Black is actually what got me into this whole mess. I picked some up on a whim at the salon and started looking for other products on Amazon. Stumbled onto Proraso and the rest is history.

+1 on the beard Lube as a pre-shave.

JB was one of the first creams I tried and still have. I had read that by using a dab of Col Conk soap lather with it (or using glycerin) helps with the dryness and that is what I've been doing. I feel the lather is nice and rich with the combo but will probably not buy it again.

I'm a big fan of JB products. Their Beard Lube is great and their Triple Action Shave Cream that comes in the big puck is pretty nice as well (Proraso is bit better IMO). Their facial scrub is the best out there IMO. I also have their face and hand moisterizers which work very well. Yeah it's a bit pricey but it's quality stuff and it has a clean masculine scent. Pretty good bang for your buck as far as the higher end stuff goes.

GQ and Esquire always have good reviews of their products which is what got me to try their products. Also if you order directly from JB they include a ton of samples. Only thing I don't care for is their colognes. Bit too sweet smelling IMO....

It's NOT a lathering cream, trying to lather it is just going to annoy and frustrate you.

Is their shave/face soap any good?

It is a good wash but expensive and I fell like my skin and beard feel softer just using Noxzema.

I had some of the cream in the tube and it was ok, the after shave with the sunscreen actually made my skin feel as good as anything I've used and since I shave my head it helped protect my dome even through rounds of golf when I forgot my hat

I recommend either the CO Bigelow creams from bath and body works, Kiss My Face (natural food stores ie Whole Foods) or Real Shave Co (various pharmacies) before JB. better performing and better priced in my opinion.

I have only used their post shave lotion, the wife picked it up at HEB. It's not bad but not great either.

In my experience, JB Beard Lube outperforms all of them, and it's not even close.

I do like their deodorant. It's called Pit Boss. Has a nice smell to it, just like the body wash. The scent lasts long. I've tried others like Task Essential and the JB was better.

The Beard Lube I use as a pre shave oil.

I sometimes get blisters on my hands from work and golfing and the Hand Healer works wonders over night. JB has some solid products.

I like the Beard Lube a lot. It is as good as it gets for me with a cartridge razor, and when i go a few days without shaving i find it works great to do a first pass with a cartridge and some beard lube before breaking out the DE razor and cream to finish it off. I did a full review here:

Personally, I agree with some of the others that use it as a pre-shave oil. I'd switched from canned foam/gel to JB Beard Lube a few years ago, and the results were much better. That said, I switched from JB Beard Lube to TOBS and T&H (right after purchasing a 16oz pump of JB, unfortunately), and those results were much better (cartridge and DE).

If I had to rank on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being "same as sandpaper" and 10 being "a shave from God's barber"...
2 - Canned Gel/Foam
6 - Jack Black Beard Lube
9 - TOBS & T&H (I'd give it a 10, but come on...it's God's barber):sneaky2:

Interesting. In my not so distant past, I used the JB Beard Lube with my carts and loved the results. It way outperformed the Edge Gel I has been using before. With JBBL, I never had a problem with razor burn unless I used my cartridge for one too many shaves. It also gave me a DFS nearly every time.

It's been sitting in my drawer, eyeing my with puppy dog eyes every since I switched to DE last month. After reading this thread, I see I can still make it part of my shaving ritual. I'll definitely try it as a preshave! Thanks for the tip!
