View Full Version : Products that represent the Best Value for Money...

OK, we have had the "most over rated" and "most underrated" threads. What about one about products you believe that you believe represent the best value in wet shaving. I will start:
1. Gillette Superspeed/Rocket. A solid razor that can be picked up for a decent price. Most people believe that it is a good, if mild shaver.
2. Schick Injector. I know I am going out on a limb with this pick, but Injectors can be had for very little money and once mastered, are great little shavers.
3. Omega Boar brushes. Heck, a great quality boar brush can be had for less than the cost of a VDH brush and most people who have tried them love them, especially the 10048 and 10049.
4. Real Shaving Company Cream. A solid performer that can be had for around five dollars a five ounce tube.
5. Astra SP/Wilkinson Sword Classic/US Personna/Red IP blades. Astras are the favorite of many here, myself included and they are inexpensive. Wilkies are an adequate blade that can be found just about anywhere as can US Personnas and they do give a good shave. Red IP blades are still inexpensive and give a superior shave.
OK, that is my start. Anyone else want to chime in?
Gotta be a fanboy for VdH Deluxe and Glycerin soaps again.

Vaeline Men Hand & Face as an ASB. $5 for a huge bottle that lasts forever. Keeps my face feeling moisturized all day long. Good as a hand moisturizer, too.

I think that TN Dickenson's Witch Hazel is great Value for Money at under $4 a bottle. Also the Nivea ASBs are pretty good too for around $6 or so.

I don't feel too bad spending good money on quality shaving products. Based on how long they last I feel like they are good value for the money. That being said, there are some that are better values than others. My favorites being:
Clubman Aftershave
$5 thrift store DE
Shave Secret Oil
Generic witch hazel

VDH!
Gold Dollar #66. I just bought a half dozen for $4.58 each, free shipping. It takes a lot of work to get a GD ready to shave, but the price is right and you end up with a pretty darn decent razor if you do your part.
Frank Shaving 30mm silvertip. Nothing in its price range compares.
Big Daddy 3" strop from star shaving supply. What a strop! What a price!
Pinaud Clubman. Nice classic scent.
There ya go. A value-packed ensemble of soap, razor, brush, AS and strop for cheap that will definitely gitter done.

Most of my picks are already mentioned, but unless I missed it, no one mentioned Williams soap. I know the riot is about to start, but I've used it for over 30 years, and it works great for me. It's still less than a buck per puck, and is the only one that's everywhere, at least around home.

I've just shaved with a Treet Platinum blade using Erasmic cream, followed by Nivea balm. Excellent VFM, although the Nivea is a bit expensive in the UK so it pays to look out for special offers - Boots regularly do 3 for 2.
The Treets took a long time to get used to - came down to too much pressure in the end - but they are one of my favourite blades now. Erasmic is wonderful stuff, easy to whip up into a thick lather and cheap as chips here. It smells nicer than the Palmolive cream IMO and works out as better value.

Gotta be a fanboy for VdH Deluxe and Glycerin soaps again.
Never used VDH, but given the popularity and price, I'd have to agree, and add Tabac soap to the list.
3 months and I've barely made a dent in my puck. Yes, it's in a rotation with MWF and Mama Bear's, but it is used at least 75% of the time.
Yeah, that's a problem; we get all these soaps and will never be able to use them all!

horse hair and boar brushes good brushes well under the cost of a badger you can get one of each and still come-in under a badgers cost , razorrock soap (xxx in particular ) under a 10 spot ,SE razors from ebay yeah you got to spend some time and bid , but you can easily find alot for well under what a new de costs sometimes even in mint ( I scored a mint gem gbar still had the" place blade here" piece of paper from manufacturer $23 shipped and a 1924 everready shovel head with case $13 also mint ) , superior bay rum $3 for huge bottle 750 ml bottle ( i reach for it just as much as my other bay rums dominica and ogallalla ) and the number one on my list drum roll please ... glycerine add a few drops when making lather super- lather , rough shave couple drops into aftershave of choice in palm of hand before you splash it on , very soothing

1. Got to give a shout out here for the NIB's finest two band w/extra hair. For $20 turns any brush handle into an excellent badger brush.
2. Marvey Green rubber Shave Mug. I consider this to be my best shaving related purchase in two years of traditional wetshaving. Knock it off the counter a hundred times on a hard tile floor, and it just keeps bouncing back! :)
3. Aqua Velva Musk. You can buy it anywhere, it's cheap, smells awesome, lasts, and SWMBO can't keep her hands off me when I wear it. :)
4. Arko. Name stands alone for getting your money's worth.
5. Cella 1K Brick. Greatest soap on the planet period. And the brick will last forever, forever, forever.......
