So I'm working my way through this latest wave of samples. A few comments:

Caron Yatagan: Lots of celery seed in the open. I also recently got some samples from Sonoma Scents. In the SS Tabac Aurea I get a note that seems like a very vegetal celery (ruins the scent for me so far although I keep hoping it will resolve into something else.) The celery in the yatagan isn't so vegetal and doesn't bother me as much - it also just lasts through the top notes. As the scent dries down I get herbal sage - like being out in the desert. The scents aren't similar but the vibe reminds me of Tauer's Lonestar Memories - although LM is dominated by mesquite fires with the desert herbs in the background. I haven't given this a full wear yet but I like it so far - seems like a great jeans/flannel shirt kind of scent.

Lalique Encre Noir: I was interested in this one because I haven't yet found the vetiver scent I want to wear. At first the Guerlain Vetiver dry down was harsh and reminded me of stale cigarette smoke. As I smell more vetivers that drydown is getting better as my nose seperates the vetiver and tobacco more but I'm still not at peace with it. Encre Noir opened with nice vetiver - smoky and raw - I like it. As it dries down a familiar richness wafts in and out which I couldn't place until: Tam Dao. As this dries down I get a huge hit of Iso E Super which is the dominant smell as this resolves. This, Tam Dao and Terre d'Hermes are all scents I'm on the fence about. I sort of like the smell of Iso E Super but I fatigue on it before it's gone. Need to wear this a few more times see what develops.

Rochas Man: I like. I've never really worn any gourmands before. The mellow lavender leading into coffee/cocoa then fading to vanilla was very easy to wear. Wore this on an evening where my wife and I were at different events. The next morning I passed her in the living room and she commented on how good I smelled. Just a lingering clear vanilla at that point but my wife rarely comments on my scents so that was a plus.

Body Kouros: Opens with some eucalyptus and incense that I've convinced myself links it to Kouros though I couldn't explain how. But quickly turns into burnt sugar (dead on description, StylinLA) Some vanilla comes in as it dries down and turns the burnt sugar into roasted marshmallow/creme brulee kind of smell. I wouldn't have thought I'd like to wear this but it's somehow lighter and more transparent than it sounds. I like this one too.

Lolita Lempicka au Masculine: wearing this today. So far: Good -n- Plenty. Saw a study a few years ago (and I think StylinLA mentioned this recently) that licorice was a smell that excited women. If I was still in the marketplace I'd give this one a try ;-) I don't dislike it, but not sure it's going to rise to the level of picking up a bottle.

Black licorice or red licorice? :biggrin1:

From your descriptions, the Rochas Man seems like one I would be interested in trying. I love the smell of coffee/cocoa. The lavender scares me a little, but I bet it does a good job of toning down the somewhat bitterness of the coffee.

It seems like a lot of scents have a vanilla base.

Nice writeup. You got me jonesing to put on a little Rochas Man. It always makes me hungry though.
