I went to an antique store the other day and ran across a glass jar of Colgate Brushless Shave Cream, in the box with foldout instructions. To my amazement, it was still nearly FULL of cream! I whiffed it and it smells kind of like today's Colgate toothpaste! I think I have to go back and buy it. My question is... can this stuff still be good? I think it's from the 1940s!

Here's a pic I found on eBay of the jar type:

Wow! I'd be surprised if it was still good but if it smells ok it might be. The only way to know is to get it and try lathering it up. If you decide to pick it up let us know how it goes.

Yes, I would be very interested to know as well.

If it's not separated, and doesn't smell funny, and you can do a patch test on your wrist without getting all funky, I'd say go for it.

I'll go back tomorrow and see if it's still there. It did look like it needed to be stirred a little, but not bad. Smelled good. I'll report back if I indeed get it.

Hell, I'd snag it for the jar alone!

Remember, those were brushless creams! It may very well not lather at all, by design. Still a cool find, as other said, if for nothing else than the jar.

Get it for the jar, you can always put a different type of cream in the jar.

I got it, but my memory was off a little. Different jar. I like the other jar better than this one, but I still love this find!

Cool find for sure! I'd love to hear if it still functions. Would love to have something that rare in my rotation!

Considering your assessment of what it smells like, if it does not shave well try it as a toothpaste and lets us know how that works out.

I picked up a tube of Colgate shaving cream a while back, and it was the kind that lathers with a brush. I used it and it worked great, but then in another thread someone mentioned that older creams might work well, but they also might contain ingredients that are no longer allowed in products because they are no longer considered safe, and that the metal squeeze tubes they came in might contain lead. I don't know if that's right or even possible, but the possibility was enough to scare me off the old creams. I do still enjoy vintage soaps, though.

Congrats on the cool find, by the way, and thanks for the great write up and cool pics! :thumbup1:

Wow. Thanks for posting the shots. Maybe call Colgate and ask them if its still good?

Ooh, I wouldn't have been able to resist that myself - and I also wouldn't be able to resist trying it :001_smile

If it still smells good and the consistency feels good, that suggests the lid has held airtight over the years, and you must be in with a chance of it still working.

I'm quite sure they would say it is not, just to be on the safe side, and to avoid any possible lawsuits.

Looks pearlescent, like the green Varvatos brushless I got at TJ Maxx...

it's cool but I don't think I'd use it.

Alright guys, I tried the vintage Colgate cream this morning. It was superb! It's quite thick when dabbing a finger in it, but thins out easily onto a wet face. I applied as little as I could get away with, trying to conserve this relic. The scent of this stuff just screams "VINTAGE". I'm only 32 years old, but I was hit with a nostalgic feeling that I wasn't expecting. It smelled refreshing... yet very old, like something I might have smelled as a kid while visiting great-grandparents. I wonder if that makes sense to anyone else. Anyway, the cream gave me a fantastic shave with my Edwin Jagger DE89 and an Astra SP blade on its 2nd day. I merely did a WTG & ATG pass with a little touching up and got the easiest BBS I may have ever had. It makes me wonder if I need to switch to shave creams instead of hard soaps. This jar of vintage Colgate Brushless Shave Cream is going on my "top shelf" and I'm going to use it only on special occasions.

By the way, since the instructions say to either rub in remaining cream or wipe off... I rubbed it in and let my face air dry. My wife said that it smelled good. I'm really happy!

That's crazy! I never would have thought that old stuff would stay good that long.
