View Full Version : ATG - I just can't do it.

Hi all!
I'm back after a hiatus of about half a year, and with a vengeance. After really learning so shave with a straight, I just focused on the shaving itself while avoiding outside influences such as B&B to really try and learn from scratch.
But i've hit a sticking point, my ATG-passes. I just can't get the grip right which usually results in me getting a nick or two, though I do get an extremely close shave out of it.
So how am I supposed to do this right?
I'm glad to always have you guys to count on, so thanks a lot!

Some folks just can't tolerate ATG. You may be one of them. Do what works for you and doesn't rip up your face.

I can only tolerate it using my slant, for some reason. Must be due to the radial nature of the blade compared to a traditional DE. I don't often attempt it though. The risk/reward is not there for me. I'd rather be non-BBS than have irritation all day.

I also can't make an ATG pass. I'm perfectly happy with a DFS rather than an irritation-laden BBS.

The bottom line is, you do what works for you. For me, the key to a comfortable ATG pass is really stretching the skin taut.

+1 on the above. I have only been able to do a successful ATG pass for a BBS on 2 or 3 out of 10 attempts. I am new to the art of wet shaving and will likely continue to try ATG as my skill develop but for now I am completely OK with a DFS.

I can't shave atg with a DE at all or I break out but I can shave atg every day with a straight razor and have no irritation to speak of.

No breakouts as of yet. The only problem really is the grip. I've tried all sorts of grips when going ATG. But none of them seem to make it any easier..

One thing I've learned about wet shaving is that ATG isn't always necessary. For the most part, I get a great shave with WTG/XTG, and I'll occasionally go ATG for special occasions or if I have the time. The key is taking care of your face. If you get a good shave without it, don't force it.

Keep in mind that that BBS is very elusive, and trying to get it can only lead to irritation and redness along with nicks and cuts.
Usually the only one who knows the BBS is there is yourself. So I'd just settle for a presentable shave that will always work in any situation. Just try going WTG and XTG if you can do the XTG.

I get a near BBS form WTG, ATG x 2. I almost never got ATG-no need really.

This too will come to pass !
Meaningless, meaningless!
For me, if I skip ATG, after 24 hours, I have what looks like 72 hours of growth. But, I only use DEs, maybe it's different with straights. I can't go ATG at all on my lower lip, and once or twice I've gotten away with it on my upper lip, otherwise not. Everything else is fair game.

If you can't do ATG, don't. There are many shavers who can get a DFS - but if they go ATG they get a CNSWI (cut and nick shave with irritation.) Don't torture yourself.
