Hello everybody, this is Dave as the latest newbie check-in. Like many before me, I finally got fed up with neck irritation and subpar shaves from overpriced cartridges and decided to take the plunge into the DE world. I've been at it about a week and in hindsight I wish I had stumbled across this forum before taking said plunge, but this is what I have so far:
-Merkur 37C (plus a 10 pack of Merkur blades)
-Rooney pure badger brush
-Truefitt and Hill No. 10 shaving cream
-my usual Loreal after shave balm

The 3-4 pass technique is coming along pretty well and I've already had several DFS occasions with minimal irritation. It seems once a blade is on its third shave it already starts pulling and the irritation increases (more weepers too). I would say I have a moderately coarse beard but only 2 good shaves out of a blade seems low compared to what most people in here seem to be reporting. I'm gathering that the conventional advice is to stick with the same equipment for a while when starting out and not change too many variables at once. My other question is as far as replacement blades, which is the most economical way to purchase them? I have to shave daily, which hasn't been all unpleasant while establishing this new routine...

Any general advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Welcome to B&B!

I get two shaves from some blades, and up to five or six from others. But it's best not to push a blade too far, or you may end up with ingrowns or irritation. Blades are much cheaper in quantity. For vendors, supporting vendors is a great place to start.

Welcome to the B&B gang!

As mblakele said , life of the blade depends on the quality and your beard Blades are cheaper in bulks.

Welcome to B&B. Looks like you are in the right path. The only thing I would recommend is that you try different blades and find what the right blade is for you. Blades work differently from one person to another. Blades that I like may not be the same blades that you like. For example, I like feather and Astra blades, however, one of my good friend does not like them at all. He prefers Dorco blades. For this reason, I would recommend that you get a sample pack of blades and find the blade that's right for you.
Good luck
