View Full Version : Semogue 2011 LE boar - shedding issues?

I just received a Semogue 2011 LE boar (size 2) brush from Bullgoose.

I was all excited to get it, but when I started test-lathering with it (to start the break-in) it started shedding like crazy. I was wondering if this was expected. None of the Semogue boar brushes I've used before (I've used a bunch) have shed at all.

---

Some details: I let the bristles soak in warm water for about 15 min before I started lathering. I made a very watery lather with some Fraser's cream. It shed 12+ hairs that time.

This morning, I tried it again, and again it shed 8-10 hairs. Some were complete hairs and some were bits. I know the second lathering was too soon and that the hairs were still damp from last night's test-lather, but I was curious about the shedding.

Anyway, it's been 20+ hairs over two test latherings. Seems a bit much to me.

I know Phil will stand by the product, so I'm not worried about my money - I just would like people's opinions on whether this is normal or not, and when I should give up and contact Phil about a return.

Thanks.

My Boar 1 and Finest 2 haven't shed a single hair in about 5 uses each. I think you got a lemon and hopefully can send it back.

Don't give up on it yet, my Semogue 1520 has shed about twelve hairs and I'm still in the break in process. Use it a few times and if it keeps shedding hairs then contact Phil.

Yeah, I'm actually pretty open to holding onto it and seeing if it stops shedding (it's early days on this brush). My only issue with that is that, since this is a limited edition brush, by the time I've given it enough time to settle in, there may be no brushes available for an exchange (if needed).

I have a size 1 bristle and it has not shed one hair. I have had shedding issues with a few brushes, and none of them ever just stopped shedding. That is just my experience though. 20 hairs in two lathers is a lot. It might slow down, but may shed one to two hairs per shave based on my past experience with "shedders." I would not be happy with that.

My Boar 1 and Badger 2 probably only lost 5 hairs between the 2 of them in their initial test lather. Since then I've used the Badger about 6 times and lathered the Boar every other day to break it in and they haven't lost any.

I never had a boar brush shed..... that sucks for such an expensive boar brush. Good luck with resolving the issue

Well, it shed again today. :(

Anyway, I contacted Phil (bullgoose), and he immediately offered a refund. I settled for an exchange -- I want one of these brushes.

It's great dealing with a vendor like Phil - no worries, and great transactions.

Glad Phil had a backup for you. That was the thought in the back of my mind - you give it a fair shake, then by the time you talk to the vendor they're sold out...

I received a Bristle 1 in the mail today. It shed 4-5 hairs with my initial test lather. I'll watch closely over the next week or so and see if this is a trend.
