Anyone ever used bald frog soap? I got a sample of it with my straight and its my first soap, so i don't know what to think of it. People who have used it, what do you think of it?

I had a sample that I received from Larry at Whipped Dog that I hadn't had a chance to use until I saw your post yesterday. I used it last night and (having only used it once now) found it to be a perfectly acceptable glycerin based soap. Mine was a light mint scent that I found pleasant.

When I first received it, the only info I could find was some comments about the soap made by the maker at straightrazorplace.com. I don't recall his name right now but he is a member there.

I'd never heard of it until now. Couldn't find anything on the webz except that Mastershake over at SRP makes the stuff.

Got a sample from Larry with my straight. Used for the first time yesterday. It's a little hard to load in its current form and I had to swirl it a lot in the Old Spice mug I was using. Once I got enough loaded it did as well as any glycerin based soap I've used, but I find myself prefering tallow based soap. I'm going to try to melt it into the bottom of the mug and should make it easier to load. It's a pretty generous sample and should be good for several shaves.

... I'm going to try to melt it into the bottom of the mug and should make it easier to load. ...

That's what I did. Two 5 second bursts in the microwave did the trick.

I tried it and wasn't too impressed with it. Couldn't get a bit of decent lather. I'll melt some down for easier loading and try it again.

I got some from Whipped Dog when I ordered a sample of MWF. I haven't tried it yet, but can easily smell it through the plastic wrapper...

Used it again today and I have no complaints. It's a nice soap.

Hmm, yeah I guess I'm just not able to lather soaps very well yet. My lather doesn't look ANYTHING like that. Maybe what i really need is advice on that...

And thanks guys for your response, I'm fairly new here, so I wasn't sure what the guidelines for mentioning vendors was. But yeah got mine from Larry when I bought my sight unseen deal.

It's a fairly typical glycerine soap. It just takes a little extra effort to whip up. Keep it up! You'll get it!

Just wanted to jump in on a slightly older thread...

I got a free sample of Bald Frog (Wake up Rosemary) with an order from Larry at WD. I had my first shave with it this morning. The lather was slick, had decent cushion, and held up well. My face still feels pretty well moisturized. I wasn't a big fan of the scent (rosemary is great, but it's probably best left on chicken), but it faded pretty quickly and didn't interfere with my AS.

Anyhow, that's my 2 cents. Looking forward to giving it another try tomorrow.

I'll jump in here. I was one of the first adopters of Bald Frog over on SRP before he became a vendor. It does take a bit more time to whip up. If your lather is weak, keep trying. It takes a fairly specific water/soap ratio. It is a glycerin soap, and I prefer a tallow base, but it has great cushion, great glide, and great scents. Scott (Mastershake) has a lot of different scents. I have all of them I think. I don't use glycerin soaps often, but when I do, I use Bald Frog.

I used the Wasabi scent of this today. Now, admittedly, this is my first time using a real shave soap so I don't have much experience, but I thoroughly enjoyed the encounter. Very slick and smells AWESOME. A spicy, woodsy scent.

I tried the Arabian Hookah scent this morning for the first time from the sample sent with my brush from Whippeddog. I shaved the little block and then pressed it into the bottom of a mug and noticed it took a few extra swirls to load, but after face lathering, it was nice and slick and I had plenty of lather on my brush for 3 passes. Just remember to rinse your face after each pass and leave it wet to apply next round if you are face lathering. I highly recommend giving it a go, just email the maker at [email protected] to order direct.

If ANY soap is good enough for Larry to include as a sample with his products, that is a high recommendation indeed. Well worth a try at the least!

I received a sample of lavender chamomile with my order, it is a different scent, cant say its my favorite but its still a perfectly usable scent.

I just used my sample of Arabian Hooka this morning and while it took a little longer to load it was very slick with good cushion, gonna have to ger a bar of this.

How expensive is it? Like the VDH/Col. Conk area of glycerin soaps or is it a bit higher in price?

I saw "bald frog" and just thought "wow horrible advertising!"

Bald Frog is supposed to mean "As Slick As".

The soap from Mastershake is not expensive. 4 oz in a tin for $8. I have the Citrus Blend. I also like the Tangerine.

He has 14 scents.

Just look in the Vendors Corner on SRP.

Took me a while to get it right, but I like the light scent and it makes a very slick lather. All in all, I prefer tallow.

With a name like Bald Frog, it's got to be good.

As long as you aren't blatantly shilling something mentioning vendors is OK. At one time we had a couple of vendors that were automatically edited out of posts but that is not in effect anymore (one of those banned vendors improved his service greatly, I don't know about the other one or two vendors).

As for lathering, take your time. I am a DE user (don't have the manual dexterity for a straight and my hands shake some as well) but I find that lathering on the puck works quite well. Try swirling a lightly shaken but not squeezed brush onto the puck for about 60 seconds. If the lather is too thick for your tastes (I like my lather about the thickness of yogurt or slightly runnier but without too many bubbles), draw approximately 3-4 tablespoons of water in your shaving mug (on top of the soap is fine) and swirl the loaded brush in the mug 8-10 times. If the lather is too thin, keep swirling in 30 second increments until the lather is right. Different soaps load differently.

I would pick up a puck of VDH to use after the Bald Frog is used up. It is available in Wal-Mart and Target and is surprisingly high-quality for its price. The cheaper green and white box pucks (there are three varieties) are fine, the Luxury pucks are a bit larger and also highly regarded. All are glycerin-based so if you must you can melt them a bit so they don't rattle in your mug. Eventually SSAD will hit and you will buy more soaps (Tabac stick, Proraso tub and Arko stick are all excellent soaps but they are tallow-based so don't attempt to melt them) but the VDH will do for now. Don't buy Williams pucks in the store. They are notoriously difficult for noobs to lather and even with good lathering skills there are much better quality shaving soaps.

I love my tallow...so I was not that impressed with my sample. Smelled really good though.

I think it is a fine soap.

I got two samples with transactions -- one was just too small for me to anything with. I didn't get it "secure" into a mug, largely pushed it around with the brush. Really it was my fault, being unable to negotiate the size of the sample. I believe it was the wasabi, and smelled pretty awesome. The second sample was chocolate, or cocoa (not sure what it's officially called). That was larger and slightly softer and more manageable. I thought it worked really well, though not my favorite shaving "flavor". I'm still curious about these soaps, even after two samples.

I got a wasabi sample from Larry as well. first two times I used it, I chased it around the mug and got a thin lather. now I just hold it in my hand and load it from my hand. once I got it right, I like how slick and well cushioned it is.

So do you put the soap In a paper cup before the microwave for 9 seconds? And then pour it into your wood shave bowl?

I got a sample with my Sight unseen deal. I think it's great! I want to buy a full size puck.
