A couple years in with DE shaving and I still haven't tried Feathers, though I have a couple packs lying around. I've heard people say they're kind of rough with a fresh blade, and better for the following shaves. Do you just soldier through the first shave every time you change blades, or do you cork/palm-strop/etc the fresh blade to smooth it out?

Yes, the second shave with a Feather is a bit smoother than the first, but I wouldn't sweat it. Just use a light touch and you'll be fine.

What razor are you using? I find them very comfortable in all my modern razors less so in the vintage. But in either they shave very well in spite of their scary reputation.
They are just razor blades, it's not like they will skin your face when using them... Personally I love the feel of a fresh Feather.
Just go ahead and enjoy them. :001_smile

No stropping at all ever;just load into the razor and shave away. I have found that my best combo is my Lady Gillette + Feather; 2nd best(so far) Slanthammer + Feather. All other combos are for variety's sake-but this applies to me only.

I think it depends on the razor. Out of my slim the first shave is really good with a light touch and the following day is perfection.

Feather gives a nice close shave first time, and second time is tugging, pulling, and irritation...
YMMV...

Don't fear the first shave with a fresh Feather; imo it is the best shave it has to offer and goes downhill pretty fast after that. YMMV but I think it is rather forgiving for such a sharp blade and I never experienced a Feather's first to be rough at all.

Feathers eat my face for breakfast, and my neck. :(

I generally run the sharp edges along some sandpaper and then use some tin shears to cut about an 1/8 of an inch off the edge. I then get on my knees and pray to all known gods before shaving with the razor an inch above my face. Only safe way to use a feather really.

I tied my first Feather yesterday and it was smoother and sharper than any other blade I have tried for the first use. Perma-Sharps was really good on the second shave and onwards, but the first shave was not smooth at all.

No short answer for this :P
Lately, though, it's either a Rocket HD or a DE89, so one vintage, one modern.
Thanks for the encouragement, fellas. I'm gonna try it soon; perhaps this weekend.

Aye. Agreed.
I find that the second shave is actually the best shave I get from that blade.
The third one seems to be less comfortable, for some reason, in most razors I've put them in.
I can, however, get three excellent shaves every time from a feather in a tech.
Hope it helps,
