The English Shaving Company (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdSrch.cgi/@cTraditional%20safety%20&%20double%20edge%20razors@bEdwin%20Jagger) is currently offering free shipping and they throw in some nice samples with every order. I've ordered all my EJ razors from them and they ship quickly. Another tip I would give is to check the conversion rate. If you pay in GBP the plain DE89 is about $29 shipped, if you pay in USD for the same razor the price is $31.53 shipped.

The Barley Chrome is my personal favorite. See my post here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/202697-EJ-DE89BA11-Barley-Chrome?highlight=) for more images and info.

The Barley is a beautiful razor. I opened it up, and for a minute I didn't even want to shave with it. Just for a minute and then I came to my senses lol.

why barley?
Cause the Barley appears to provide a better grip and the ball end style handle is just a classic design. If the Barley was sold out, the lined version was my next choice. :001_smile

I think the Barley Chrome is the most beautiful handle of all the EJ DE89's, and I fully intended to buy it two weeks ago at The Great Shave Event in Chicago where every one of the Edwin Jagger razors was there on display for everyone to pick up and hold, and where the 250+ of us in attendance all had the chance to meet and talk with Neil Jagger, the owner and founder of Edwin Jagger. It was a great opportunity to see the entire line of Edwin Jagger shaving products on display in one place at the same time. I held each razor up to my face in turn to see how each handle felt in the hand, and in spite of the Barley Chrome's phenomenal looks and my going there with full intent to buy it, I ended up purchasing the exquisite octagonal handled DE89 instead. For me, and this is purely a personal opinion, the octagon handle had the most "sure" grip with far less chance of slippage. The knurling on the Barley Chrome was beautiful, but certainly didn't seem very deep. The octagonal handled DE89, by the way, tips the scale at 80 grams (just one gram heavier than a Fat Boy, for those interested in a comparison of nearly equally weighted razors). Nonetheless, in terms of looks, I still think the Barley Chrome handle is the most beautiful of all in the EJ line.

gabiavaz,
If you are looking at an entry level DE, go with the EJ DE89, beautiful razor and very cheap ($40 CDN). If you want something nice, go with the Chatsworth Barley or the new Bulbous model, but these are more expensive, $115 US and $130US respectively.
Good luck

I recently purchased the DE8911, which is the 2011 model of the DE89 and has a slightly different end to the handle (smooth handle, though) and supposedly has more weight balanced towards the head for even better shaving. It was $34 from West Coast Shaving and am *very* happy with it, wish I purchased it sooner.

I don't have the DE89, but the DE8911 does seem to be top-heavy and gives a nice smooth shave on its own without feeling the need to apply pressure.
What blades do you find work best in your EJ?

These confuse me. I was looking at the Muhle and it has the same head but cost 2x?
I love the style of the muhle head, but why pay 2x for the same head?

Check out Chris at Traditional Shaving, I believe the DE89 goes for $29. I owned a DE89L for about a year and then sold it so that I could get the R41. I missed the DE89L so I traded for a DE86 which has the same head as the DE89 and an Ebony handle. I really like the DE86 and I'm getting great shaves with it.

I hear you on this. And the EJ has a better handle than the Muhle. I wonder if we'll ever see an EJ with the new R41 head.

I used to have the Muhle R89 which cost me $61. it gave me smooth shaves but it also left me with good amount of redness and irritation due to its light weight ( 64 grams ). EJ razors are heavier so you automatically apply less pressure. I ended up selling the R89.

I have heard that although the muhle is lighter, the handle is better quality. Also, they seem to stand behind their product which is a HUGE selling point for me. I just sold my Merkurs after hearing horror stories about their customer service.
My wife wants a final Xmas list by tomorrow and I can't choose between the EJ and the Muhle. I am leaning towards the Muhle because I hear their customer service is amazing.

Ok from experience I can tell you to get the DE 89811 the octogon. Has the best grip among all the DE89 series. And it is the 2011 model which is great.

That has the Mulhe head? Looks very nice and is $20 cheaper.
I am torn between the DE 89811 and R41. Is the 89811 gonna do the job with a feather strapped in?

It has been a month since I received the razor and I love it. Great weight and balance for my hand. The natural pressure on my face is enough for a satisfying shave with the Derby or Astra blades I have tried so far. Soap used most often is Tabac in a bowl with a Omega 11047 Banded Boar/Badger combo brush. My other razor is a 1959 Gillette Fatboy adjustable that I bought on ebay.

I just received my briar handle EJ today from TESC (along with matching best brush and stand). I will be shaving with it tomorrow for the first time, but it looks like it has the same head as my Barley. I wanted to have a nice set that SWMBO would not mind seeing out on the sink, but also wanted a razor I could travel with, hence the barley in addition to the briar. Being new to DE shaving I decided to stick with a milder razor, and one which I could become comfortable with prior to experimenting.

Yes the muhles and EJ have the same head. I had the R89 and sold it because the handle was way too light. The R41 gave me a lot of irritation. i sold both to a friend of mine. The de89811 has a great grip and has the muhle head.

I just bought an 8911. Plain handle. I've used it three times now and I'm very pleased. The handle is much bigger than I'm used to but very comfortable and I like the balance. The shave (using a feather) is outstanding. I've loved using my gillette tech but I don't think I'll be reaching for it any more.

I've had EJ89 with the Barley handle for 5 months and Muhle R89 for over a month. I never felt this Muhle head right with these two handles. Everything came together when I got the D.R. Harris handle (same as Chatsworth). It's a beautiful head and I get great feedback with this pair razor/handle.
I received my DE89 Barley last week and get excellent shaves with it so far. My only complaint is the grip. The barley pattern is mostly for aesthetics over practicality. I bought a Muhle R41 at the same time and find the Muhle handle to provide a better grip. So I might have to transform my EJ Barley into a Muhle R89 and go with that. Would be a waste to let that gorgous barley handle sit there unused though.

I felt the same way when I started using only D.R Harris over the Barley and Muhle handles. They look beautiful.

how is the grip? The grip is fine. Common sense says a textured grip should be more secure so I almost got the barley. But I hadn't read anywhere that anyone had trouble with the smooth finish so I went for it. I did not notice any slipping at all even with a fingertip grip while running side to side under the chin. I wondered too if the size would give me trouble. I have small hands and this is the fattest handle I've used. But it's very comfortable.
