Ive gotten the hand of regular lathering with my cella soap as well as using cream to make lather in a bowl.

I recently started to face lather, but had a few questions:

After getting my brush loaded just like for regular lathering, and doing the first lather.... to add more water do you just dip the brush and keep going on your face until it lathers like normal in a bowl?

After the first pass, the subsequent passes dont produce much lather using the same brush. Am I supposed to reload the brush, or does it just seem to take more soap with the first loading?

Do you even try to face lather with a cream? Just apply directly to the bristles, or apply to your face in a thin layer and brush away, adding water as needed?

Basically, the answer to all your questions is "whatever works, there's no right or wrong way."

After getting my brush loaded just like for regular lathering, and doing the first lather.... to add more water do you just dip the brush and keep going on your face until it lathers like normal in a bowl?

You can do that, or dribble water in off your fingers, or hold it under the faucet, whatever is most comfortable for you.

After the first pass, the subsequent passes dont produce much lather using the same brush. Am I supposed to reload the brush, or does it just seem to take more soap with the first loading?

Depends on the brush and how full you loaded it, but there's no shame in going back to the puck/cream for 2nd/3rd passes if you need some more.

Do you even try to face lather with a cream? Just apply directly to the bristles, or apply to your face in a thin layer and brush away, adding water as needed?

Both work, I like to squirt it directly into the brush but there's no real reason to do it one way instead of the other.

For creams I just take a dab and smear it over my beard then start lathering away dipping the tips of the brush in water to build the lather. As for soaps if I'm using a stick just load the beard and the lathering process is the same as cream. And for a soap puck just load the brush. I don't know why your not getting enough lather for subsequent passes as my brush holds way more than I need.

I find with facelathering, each subsequent pass produces less lather on the face but it's always enough to shave with. This also depends on the brush. Certain brushes seem to distribute the lather better.

Oh, come on, dude! There is tremendous shame in having to go back to the soap, not to mention a great mess and thorough spoiling of the mood.

Reading some posts here over the past week makes think I should start a shaving academy. 100 push-ups for having to go back to the soap. 150 for telling someone it's somehow OK.

Yikes! Come on, dude! Go ahead, start a shaving academy. You may not get far with the punitive responses to questions. Well, OK, if you meant it as a joke, I was just too sensitive. Whatever.

Try all of the above. See which one works best. It will vary tremendously based on your product and your brush.

I face lather daily, I also reload the brush every pass, and with the Tabac soap in their glass jar I've been using day in and day out for the past couple of weeks (stuck in a rut I guess=:-), I'm keeping water on top of the soap when I'm not reloading

Speaking strictly for myself, I like to reload the brush after every pass. Doing it this way I find I get the best wettest, thickest, creamiest lather....I do this for any soap I face lather. I'm sure everyone here is familiar with Marco's write up on how to load your brush using Cella. Well, I intentionally do not load the brush for as long as he states (initial loading) so I can reload every pass. For me, I find by reloading the brush each pass I'm getting the wettest, thickest, creamiest lather. Opps!, I'm starting to repeat myself=:-) Hey!, did I ever tell you why I like to reload my brush before every pass?=:-)

Best,

As Chris said, whatever works for you. I have tried spreading a little on my face and then wet the brush and go to town. That seems to work better for me when the cream is in a tube and I want to face lather. However, if the cream is in a tub or I use soap, then I find that wetting the brush and swirling it around the cream or soap works better for me.

Experiment with it and see what works best for you.

The PM you have isn't doing that great a job from what I hear.

Whatever works for you is OK. In my case, I load the brush enough for 3-4 passes, you'll get to know how long you have to swirl it (soap) or how big a dollop of cream you need. It depends on how hard the soap is, for instance.

Add drops of water as you need them and work your lather on your face till you like it. Putty soaps like Cella need a drier brush I think. Anyhow, I find face lathering nicer than bowl lathering, but as always YMMV.

Good luck!
