After much reading here and decision vacillation ,I finally ordered and received my goodies last night; EJ DE89, Semogue 1520, Palmolive stick, red personnas and gillette yellow blades. I've used some Bigelow cream the last few shaves with my multi-blade cartridge and liked it a lot although you don't get much lather without a brush....

So this Saturday when I have the time, (and will hopefully be awake enough to pay attention), will be my first attempt with the new gear. Thanks for all the info and advice.

Jon

p.S Are the heads on the Muhle R89 and the EJ DE89 identical? Just the handles differ?

That's a great starter set - I'd just add a styptic/alum, and get a blade starter pack so you have a wider range to try out (but Red Personnas and Gillette Yellows are two of my favourites).

As for the Mühle and the EJ, the general consensus does seem to be that the heads are the same - though neither company seems to be completely clear about it.

I actually found a pack of Derby razors, (which I think I might try first), as well as an alum stick(?) at a local store a few weeks ago in anticipation of the rest of the stuff. Thanks.

Welcome to B&B. An alum stick is a very nice thing to have, although I very much prefer some good old witch hazel. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, I forgot that I also bought a small bottle of that, too; cucumber scent, for that fresh apres-salad appeal!

Welcome aboard! Tell us your experience!

I'm new at it, but this one is easy: both have the same head, they even say EJ/Mühle are the same company/two brands.

You really did a good job with that starter kit. My suggestion is to start with the red personnas for a week, and then move on to the Gillette yellows. The red's are just so darn forgiving, they are great for a beginner. Ultimately, you will get a better shave with the Gillette yellow, but you've got to get your skill set up to par. For your next blade acquisitions, after a couple of months, try Astras and Sharks. Finally, once your technique is really good, go for the Feathers. Once you have experienced the Feather EJ DE89 shave, there's really not much point in looking for anything else (although, lord knows you will try cause that's part of the fun! lol!).

Also, since you have such a nice boar brush, I suggest you get a good italian soft soap like Cella, Razorock or the red Vitos with the coconut oil.

You're on your way to bliss!!!!!
