Where does "finest badger" fit in the usual badger hair ranking? Is it between "best" and "super"?

silvertip
super
best
pure

It depends on which manufacturer you are looking at. More expert members will chime in, but comparing naming conventions accross different makers are apple and oranges :)

I'm talking specifically about TGN's finest badger knots.

Then here is the order for TGN knots, in parenthesis is the order of superiority in that grade.

Silvertip (Super Silvertip, Grade A Silvertip then Silvertip) <- these vary in softness and most on B&B will tell you that the difference is so minimal that most can't tell the difference.

Super - Many have told me that this grade is just as soft as the silvertips and in fact this is silvertip just with treated tips. Treated tips will make it less in superiority only because the tips are treated

Finest

Best

Pure (Pure Badger then Black Badger) <- these are only in variance of scritchyness if that makes sense. Pure will be a tiny bit softer to most than Black.

Thanks for the explanation! My guess turns out to be right. :)

According to one of our brush vendors Finest is the best seller of TGN. I believe it having tried the others. It is the best brush for the money would be another way of saying it. I have been very please with Finest.

Ranking is irrelevant. You need to find YOUR preference. For me, within the TGN range, Finest is at the top. Not by price, overall. It has good backbone and a touch of scritch. I don't care for the st or sta at all.

I have the Finest 20mm TGN with extra hair. It's an amazing brush for bowl lathering, face lathering with Arko, soaps and creams. I just ordered a 24 silvertip short loft, 24mm super silvertip and 26mm finest with extra hair. I'm going to try them all out.

Prime example came tonight. I bought a 24mm silvertip, 24mm super silvertip and a 26mm finest from TGN. I'm in love with all three knots. I am surprised that for me in a closed eyes feeling test that with my fingertips, I think the silvertip is softer than the super silvertip which is apparently as good as it gets. The softness between the silver tip and super silvertip is so slight. If 100 is soft then I would say the TGN silvertip is 90 and the super silvertip is 85, and the TGN finest is 75. Yes - that slight for me. So they all are unique and wonderful. If you buy a TGN finest, you will receive a slight improvement in the TGN silvertip and I won't bother buying another super silvertip or grade A silvertip from TGN now that I have this guy.

I think its down to each manufacturers grading. Some don't even offer silver tip but charge as much if not more than some silver tip offerings. As Kbuzbee say's it is irrelevant to some degree and you have to find your own preference and budget.

+1 You'll find that silvertip brushes aren't necessarily the most desirable. In fact, I rarely if ever use mine. Finest, or 2 band as its sometimes called, has become very popular recently. Its my preferred grade of hair
