I'm kind of embarrassed to ask this since it seems so obvious:
I think you guys finally convinced me to go DE. As far as I could see, most members recommend the Merkur HD as the best "first DE".
I looked around the sites and found a lot of Merkurs but couldn't figure out which one was the HD (or if there are various HD's).
at the gentlemans-shop I found the following:
Rake Edge Safety Razor 25 = £20.00
Safety Razor 23 = £20.00
Safety Razor 34 = £23.50
Slant Bar Safety Razor 37 = £23.50
Progress Safety Razor = £32.50
I didn't find the 38C so many people talk about
at the Merkure site I also couldn't figure out which was the one that you guys were recommending.
what would be a good one for me to star with?
or none of the above?
any help we be much appreciated
ahh, one more thing, what is the difference between the merkur classic and the HD?

oppps,
I just saw that they have the Safety Razor 38 for £35.00.
I just thought I would find something cheaper...

There is only one Merkur HD.
Then there is the Merkur Slant,Merkur LHC, 38C, Progress(adjustable), Futur(adjustable), and The Merkur VISION (adjustable).
The HD, the Slant, the LHC, and the 38C are all fixed head razors.

The Merkur HD is only one razor, it's the Hefty Classic aka Heavy Duty aka HD aka 34C

Ok, now I think I understand, thanks...
just one more thing: If there much difference between the clasic and the HD (since the classic is a bit cheaper = £19.99 on the executive shaving Co.)?

The classic is lighter and thinner, it doesn't have the heft and stability of the HD. If you look around the HD is overwhelmingly popular around here, but the Classic isn't. Personally, I feel that the HD is well worth the added cost. You've also got to consider that this razor will last you the rest of your life and that of your children as well.

A new Merkur would be an excellent choice for a newbie.
However, you could find an old Gillette Super Speed on ebay for much cheaper.

Only true if you live in the US or Canada, unfortunately. Most razors (DE and straight) on eBay which are cheap are also sold by people in the US, who will only sell to others in the US. Which kinda sucks if you're a new wetshaver somewhere else in the world. :thumbdown
But then again there's always the buy/sell/trade section of this and other shaving forums...
