I've had a Merkur silvertip (part of a future set) for 8 months and quite suddenly it's losing about 3-6 hairs every day from the very centre.

Each day, I rinse it out, shake it off and stand it brush down in its stand, so i cannot see that I could look after it better. On the occasions that it travels, it spends its time in a cardboard tube (vented) whilst in transit.

The vendor is telling me that it needs to 'go back to Germany to be assessed' and the implication is that it could somehow my fault and won't be replaced as is.

As far as I'm concerned, it needs replacing - it is expensive and should not fail so soon.

Aside the obvious Trade Descriptions and Sales of Goods Act stuff, what's the view here about quality expectations/longevity?

Thanks guys!

From your description, it sounds like you have been treating your brush well. Does it have time to dry out on occasion? That might help. Apart from this, I would suggest contacting Merkur about the problem or to politely take the vendor up on his offer to send it back to Germany. Once in the States, I had an expensive German umbrella that failed me after a couple of months and the vendor in question made the same proposal. Then soon thereafter realizing that the model was no longer made, he gave me another brand of similar umbrella which has served me well ever since.

I'd send it back as they've requested. If they won't replace it, you could always buy a new knot at a fraction of the price and still have a lovely matching Futur set.

Second time I heard about crappy Dovo/Merkur customer service and quality. I suggest you be assertive and polite, but don't back down. You paid a lot of money and that brush should be able to handle what it was made for...
