Does anyone know if there is a relatively quick/easy way that we could tabulate the products used when people post their SOTD? I spent a little time seeing if it could be done by hand and whoa would that be a task...
I am thinking that along the lines of everyone including information like:
Razor, Blade, Brush, AS, and Cologne

in some straightforward format. Even for those that post pics it could be included under the pic where it could autograbbed by a script perhaps?!? More wishful thinking, even a db where most all products are listed and you check what you use with option to add new if not on the list.

The reason I think it would be interesting is that there are several hundred SOTD posts a month and the use stats on products would be especially interesting for newbies and vendors or just to see where the trends are. Thoughts? Crazy?

Great idea Dennis. On a recent thread concerning top 5 creams one member tabulated the results of this poll and it was very interesting. Besides Dennis I typically just try to use the items that I bought from you...:biggrin1:

We would need someone to create a smart name grabbing script that writes to a database. From there you could grab whatever stats you desire. The problem is that there are so many different products and ways of noting them. Ideally the person doing this would need access to the forum's databases, have a lot of spare time and be willing to do it for cheap or free.

I suspect though, that it would miss a lot ... if we programmed it for "Taylor Avodado" it'd probably miss 'TOBS avocado' and even 'Taylor's avocado' ... and all the other many variants of that ... just as one example!! ... not to mention all the miss-spellings of 'advocado' ... oh the mind boggles! (Well, mine does ... I'll leave it for some wise wag to comment on that ... )

Hehe - you missed my last sale Mike! It was a good one... My knowledge of vBulletin and script writing is absolutely zero which is why I asked. No one could account for all the possible variations and misspellings on something like Taylors of Old Bond Street Avocado Shave Cream and all the dozens of variants I have seen. That is why I thought a fill in the form tied to a db might be the answer but there is likely no easy way at all to tie that in to a simple SOTD post which is why I thought a script.... Ah well.

You could do it if a script was written with drop-downs. Sort of like the Hall of Fame with drop-downs. It wouldn't be terribly hard, but would require maintenance anytime a new product was used.

Speaking of which, if there are any PHP, MySQL, CSS gurus willing to help out, let me know. The Development Team might be able to use you.

On similar lines to this topic, this database could be used to create/maintain a user's "inventory". Each user could flag an inventory as publicly visible (if desired) so if another user wanted to get feedback or possibly purchase an item, it could streamline the process. This would also need to be monitored to prevent any type of abuse (spam, harrasment, etc). With a database like this you could make a page where you get a report of what you use the most, use the least, etc.

Interesting suggestion... I'd be willing to help set up and maintain such a database. However I have no idea how to write a script for it, or how to write any script for that matter, so that will have to come from somebody else...
