View Full Version : Has there been a New Jersey Get Together?

I did a search and didn't see anything resulting in NJ get togethers. I know there have been a bunch of NYC meetups and North Jersey is basically the 6th borough but I'd love to see a NJ meetup. Any interest in a meeting? Anyone interested from the surrounding areas; PA, NY, DE ?

We had a couple meets at Rutt's Hut last year. And when Scott was visiting from Kansas, we met here in South Plainfield in August. If you want to organize something, please go ahead. There are a number of NJ guys here on B&B.

I'm glad to hear about the interest, I was thinking about a NJ meetup for a while. I'm going to gauge interest in the next week or so. I was thinking about Rutt's too but I think I'll look into a different venue since it's been done. I try to get to Rutt's Hut every two weeks or so, 2 rippers, cremated fries with gravy, and a miller high life.

There are a bunch of us in SOUTH Jersey that would like to attend. Let's look for a location that's easy for all Garden Staters to get to.
Atlantic City might be a good spot, especially off-season. Trenton area would work, too. Princeton is about an hour's drive for me, but has a lot of classy venues that would host an event like this in grand style.

I-195 roughly bi-sects the state ... perhaps we should look around there to find a site. That's assuming we have equal numbers coming from North and South. We should take a casual head count.
Of all the suggestions so far, I like Princeton best. Let's try and schedule it for a time when "A Little Taste of Cuba" (http://www.cubacigar.com/) is open, so some of us can kill two birds with one stone on this trip.

Could Little Cuba host us?

Little Cuba in Atlatic City sounds good.A Little Taste of Cuba (http://www.surfcanyon.com/search?f=sl&q=A%20Little%20Taste%20of%20Cuba&partner=afa) is in PRINCETON, not Atlantic City. They have a second location in New Hope, PA.
Looking at a map, Atlantic City seems a lot farther south than I thought it was. Still, it would be easily accessible to anyone coming from anywhere in the state.
I still like Princeton. It is more centrally located, and if members want to come in from NE PA it would be easier to reach than AC.

I don't know if you ever been there, but A Little Taste of Cuba is one of the finest cigar stores I've ever been to. While I haven't been there in 10 years or more, I doubt its changed much.
It has a small seating area for smokers. Perhaps a half-dozen overstuffed lounge chairs.
I don't think it would be a good place for us shave-geeks to meet to talk about shaving. Its too small to host more than 2 or 3 of us at a time, and its focus is on tobacco, not soaps and creams and blades and brushes.
I just wanted to have a little side-trip there to pick up some cigars either before or after our gathering.
There are numerous restaurants, bistros, eateries, etc. in the immediate area, along with upscale shopping for other interests such as clothes, books, home furnishings, kitchen gadgets, etc.
No matter where we meet, the side-trips are secondary. But whenever I think of Princeton, the Cuba store immediately comes to mind.

Princeton seems like a good location, centrally located. Atlantic city seems far for the northern crowd, close to 3 hours. Rutt's seems a far for the southern crowd although I LOVE RUTT'S HUT. I enjoy a good cigar so a side trip to Little Cuba sounds like fun, I'll bring some cigars to pass around.
We still need a date. Does a weekend in November sound good?

Here is a link to the Zagat page for Downtown Princeton ... they list 46 restaurants that may fit our needs.
http://www.zagat.com/search?text=&where%5Bname%5D=princeton%2C+nj&where%5Bid%5D=&where%5Blat%5D=40.3487181&where%5Blon%5D=-74.6590472&where%5Blocale%5D=New+Jersey&where%5Bradius%5D=0#/?s=open&yp=1&where%5Bname%5D=princeton%2C+nj&where%5Blat%5D=40.3487181&where%5Blocale%5D=New+Jersey&where%5Blon%5D=-74.6590472&pp=10&where%5Bradius%5D=0.4&o%5Bd%5D=fri&o%5Bh%5D=20&sort=location
Each of these locations should be within easy walking distance of "A Little Taste of Cuba" at 70 Witherspoon Street.
I also sent this to my brother, who lived there for many years, and knows the area as a local. I'll see if he has any recommendations on one place or another, and pass along whatever he comes up with.

I just looked through the Zagat page, thanks. The steak/seafood place and Triumph Brewing looked good. I almost booked my engagement party at Triumph a few years ago but decided on something closer. I like Indian but many don't, just trying to find out what will work for everyone. Is there any cuisine that anyone isn't fond of?
I'm starting to get excited.

I'm starting to get excited.I'm getting excited, too.
I looked at the Triumph page, and I'm glad to see they have Private Rooms available ... I'm not sure if we'll need one, but it would be nice for us to hold our swap-meet/get-together in a place where our shave-geekiness won't disturb other patrons, and vice-versa.
I'll eat just about any type of cuisine. Indian is something I don't get very often, so that might be nice. I'm a big fan of Sushi and other Japanese food, but find it too expensive to enjoy more than once a year or so. Then again, since this is going to be a special occasion, I'm not going to be too concerned about the budget, so if we pick a place that is a tad on the pricey side, I think I can cope with it.

Atlantic City is directly accross from Cherry Hill and Philly if anyone is uncertain, mile 38 on the Parkway, a bit too south to be fair to all. Princeton is just about dead center and with the downtown should be the setting you seek. If things mesh with work count me in.

10-07-2011, 06:53 PM
OK, so everyone seems to agree that Princeton has the right geography for us ... now we need to decide on a date and a place to eat.
I think that holding it on a Sunday might be better to get more people out. Also, I think that Sunday would mean less crowds at whatever establishment we decide on. (A Little Taste of Cuba is open 12pm~4pm on Sundays.)
My brother's suggestions come from the perspective of a local, but we're by no means bound to just these five restaurants.
Winberie J B Restaurant & Bar
Yankee Doodle Tap Room
Triumph Brewing Co.
Mediterra
Witherspoon Grill

Is'nt Sunday a Football day here in America. What do you think the crowds will be like in a bar and how many guys will miss a game they want to see. Sunday works for me as I am not that big a football fan that I can't miss a day on the couch but the crowds in a bar might be a little heavier than you think.

This one is centered on Princeton to make it accessible to ALL New Jersey wet-shavers, as well as those in Philadelphia and NYC areas.
As a CT resident, you're more than welcome to attend. In fact, if we had someone show up from Australia or South Africa or Europe, we'll let them in, too.
A 3.5 hour drive is more than I'd put in to go to a meet-up like this, but its up to you. Suggest you look into public transport like AmTrak, or maybe car-pooling with some of the guys coming from NYC.
And/Or you could put together your own GTG in Eastern CT ... you could draw in people from NYC to Boston and beyond. There used to be a Google Map which showed the location of all members that chose to be listed. I'm not sure what happened to that map, it seems to have fallen by the way-side during the recent forum software upgrade.

That gives us a little over a month to coordinate all the other details. I was thinking the last weekend in October or the first in November, but that may be rushing it a bit.
We still need to pick a place. Maybe we need to make a reservation, if we want to get a room to ourselves. (Triumph, for one, has private rooms available, but I doubt we'd be able to get one on a walk-in basis.)

I just tried a dry run at booking a reservation at Triumph ... using their on-line "Open-Table" interface ... there are NO tables available to accomodate a party of our size in the next 8 weeks.
I used the date of Saturday, 12 November, and tried various time-slots between 12:00 and 15:00 ... the system has a built-in window that will look 2.5 hours before and after your requested time, as well.
I tried to guess at the number that would actually show up. I started with 18, lowered it to 11, finally plugged in a value of 9 ... all were unavailable.
Of course, this is just my first attempt, but we should be thinking about this while discussing logistics of the meet ... a direct phone-call or trying a different restaurant or day of the week might yield better results, but I don't have the time to plug in all the variables.
And let's not even think we're going to get a table in Princeton on a Saturday for a group our size on a walk-in basis. We need to call ahead first and get reservations.
I'm not sure how other group meets solved this, but we need to be sure that if we decide on a time, the place is going to be available to us as well.

Alternatively, we always could meet in the City as well. There are some nice shops to go to:
Cambridge Chemists and two Pasteur locations - they carry a lot of shaving stuff.
Then there is also Art Browns.....pens, inks, paper.

Cheers,We may need to change our strategy and work this backwards ... pick a day of the week (Saturday) and a time in the early afternoon, then choose a restaurant, and call to make a reservation. The restaurant can easily tell us what is the first date available, even if its a couple of months in advance.

well ..., I had been wanting to get in "A Little Taste of Cuba" while we meet. It never occurred to me that Cuban food was a way to do it.
I hope they have a smoking section out on the patio or something ... it would be a shame if those of us that love The Brown Leaf can't follow a good meal (of any type) without a good smoke. I just stocked up on Chateau Fuente and Macanudo Court, so I'm down for whatever.

Hi all-
I heard back from the Marketing Mgr. at Triumph. He indicated they would have no trouble allocating space for us and accomodating a party of @20. It would not be a private room, but it would be a space in the main room where we would have plenty of room all together. BUT- I happen to think the Somerville Cuban food suggestion is fabulous and am voting for that idea, actually. Will that still be a mid-day gathering on the 12th?
I will be bringing some DE's along I need help in ID'ing, as well as some for sale/trade... I'll come up with a list well before we meet.

Martino's looks great, I'm all about some delicious pork! It's still centrally located which should work. It seems a few of us have been there, will they be able to accomodate us? How's the parking? The parking around Triumph can be a hassle.
Yes, I'll be bringing a few things to swap/PIF.

Should we appoint someone to be in charge or let many cooks spoil the soup.Up until now, we've been doing OK with allowing different people to take initiative and act on their own ... I'm OK with keeping it that way, but if things change and we want a Head Honcho to pull together all the logistics, that's fine with me.
Just to re-cap what (I think) we've decided on so far ...
Martino's in Somerville, NJ
Saturday, Nov 12 ... exact time is still open.
Approximate attendance will be about a dozen of us.
Most people will be bringing something for Show&Tell.
A side trip to a Cigar Store, either before or after.
I already have the date approved for vacation from work ... so it will be hard to re-arrange my schedule if the date changes. I agree with whoever said that we should try and get this in well before Thanksgiving, because if we don't do it by then, everyone will be much too busy until after the holidays. (I myself won't be available from Black Friday through first week in February. I'm in the retail industry, and first we have the Xmas season, and then annual inventory following that.)

If you guys are going to a Cuban restaurant you'll need to know how to order things in Cuban
Examples.
English - I'd like a coffee, Miss. Spanish - Un cafesito con siete azucars mi bonbonsita.
English - The special looks amazing! Spanish - Coño! El especial es tremendo!
English - I do believe the chef made this a tad too spicy! Spanish - Coño! Se le fue la mano en el picante al cocinero
English - I just need a few more minutes to order. Spanish - No me jodas tanto, Coño! Necesito unos minutos mas.
So yes, I will be there.

I had a BLAST yesterday ...
I had to take a vacation day from work in order to attend, but it was Soooooo Worth It. This iis the first real vacation-vacation I've had in a long time, as opposed to just staying home and watching TV.
It was great meeting all the famous and infamous B&B'ers face-to-face ... some people looked like I thought they did, others were a total surprise. (No, I won't say which ones.)
Everyone had their own areas of expertise to bring, and I learned some new stuff about brushes and other gear that I never knew before. It was also a first-time for me (and many others, I suppose) to be able to examine such legendary products as a Bill Ellis straight, Floris ASL, Castle Forbes cream, and a Semogue Caravella(sp?) brush.
Special thanks go out to Brian for his analysis of my Grandfather's Straight-razors, and I also sat at the FP table and learned more than a few things about pens and ink ... but it will be a while before I indulge deeper into either of those two areas.
And Special-Special Double Lauditory Applause and Honors go out to Lou, who translated the menu and made suggestions for which dishes to consume. Most of us (myself included) went for the Roast Pork Cuban Style, with Cafe-con-Leche y Flan for dessert. MMmmmm ... Good!
Sorry I missed this one but I've been absent from here for a while. If you do another I would love to attend. Yesterday would not have been a good day for me anyway.
Yes, we talked briefly about having another meeting on the way out the door. Nothing was settled, but it will happen again. I won't be available until early February, but if you guys want to go ahead and meet again before that, more power to you.

Thanks. My pleasure to do so.
It was great to finally meet the "spendthrift" :) who only uses a blade twice. My frugal soul still recoils at the thought.
And if you think I'm good in a Cuban Restaurant, you should be with me in a Polish one. PIWO!!! :)

my mother's side of the family are all from a small shtetl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shtetl) that is hard to pronounce and even worse to spell.
When she was growing up over there,
it was a tiny and tight knit community.
She learned to speak, and cook, in Yiddish,
and she carried those traditions to America when she came over in 1930.
Hey Gents, did someone pick up a bottle of ink labeled "Sample#2" Give me a shout.

I know who the culprit is, and already sent Jim a PM!

That sound you just heard was the culprit being thrown under the bus!

Captain Pre Capsize said he'll get out the Captain's Choice products tomorrow. Juban62 will get a 4 oz AS and the other winners will get an AS sample vial and a soap sample.
I shaved today with a bunch of stuff from the meet-up. Bea shave stick, Ever Ready brush w/ TGN knot, Schick Injector, Schick injector blade. The Schick was too mild so a only did one pass with it and then did the next two passes with my Gillette long comb NEW.
I'll add the Schick razor to all the left-over stuff for future charity or PIF purposes.

In defense of the culprit, I distinctly remember said individual being told to "keep it" by BrianW, and that Brian would "take care" of another person...
Of course, my memory could be playing tricks on me as by that time I was in a Hops Induced Haze and forced to buy fountain pens...
Well at least that part of the plan worked.

I hope we find the time and motivation to get together again soon guys. I enjoyed meeting all of you, and look forward to future gatherings.
A big "Thank You" to Captain Pre-Capsize for the donations for the drawing- can't believe I won!! I look forward to trying the after shave.

I won't be available much until early February, we're sliding into the BUSY SEASON at work.
I'm in the Retail Industry, so we've got Black Friday and Xmas Sales coming up and January is Inventory Month.
But if you guys want to pull something together before that, go right ahead.
I'll just enjoy the meet-up vicariously through the postings and messages.
(Note to self: At the next meet-up, sit someplace other than the FP table.)

Thanks to whomever put the Hero 616 and ink on the free table. I cleaned it out, put some fresh ink in it and have been using it for the last two days. In the future, when someone asks me how I started using fountain pens I can tell them the exact date and circumstances. I foresee another AD.

Excellent...glad someone ended up with it! I think the ink that was left was Five O'Clock Shadow, but I'm not really sure. What color is it? And how do you like the brush?

Might be five o'clock shadow, put a little on a towel and you could see a bright green halo.
The brush is treating me very well. I've wanted to try TGN finest for a while. I face lathered with a BEA stick two days a row with very good results. I'll give the Cade I got from Rudy a go for the next two days but I'll be using my Caravela.

Remember that MWF I showed around that had the crystalline stucture on it? I thought that crystal had developed over the course of a year or so, because that's how long the bowl sat undisturbed before I opened it again, and I decided to just leave it that way and covered it with Saran Wrap to protect it.
But I decided to start using the soap again, and guess what? That crystalline lather reappeared the very next day! And it looks even better than it did before ... I'm more of a cream guy, so I don't know that much about soaps, but I've never seen any other brand do that besides MWF.
I don't think its the Tallow, because my other Tallow soaps don't crystallize like that ... so what is it? Could it be the Lanolin that's in MWF?

Well soap is salt so thats what you may be looking at I would guess. I missed that show and tell.

That BEA stick is a real sleeper- blows arko out of the water, I was very impressed with it.

Well, I received the Captain's package today, WAY sooner than I expected. It has a really pleasing aroma, and I look forward to using it regularly.
Thank you all again for a great day!! Let's make it happen again soon.

So I have been poking around for a while and found this. Seeing that there hasn't been a post on here since late last year I'm proposing another meetup!
Strange request: I am actually moving to the Orange area (from the midwest) in about a month and would look forward to being shown around to the local shoppes and possibly a pub or eatery.
