View Full Version : B&B Book Club and B&B Movie Club

As I hope I have made it clear during my year here at B&B, I have the utmost respect for the intellects and opinions of the members of B&B, (even those that contradict with my own  ). I would like to propose a new idea and gauge the interest, I would start to start a Book and/or Movie Club (hopefully both clubs) where we decide on a book to read or a movie to view or as I hope two separate clubs, a book club and a movie club, and we either set up a chat time or establish a thread (or both) in which we post our comments and engage in a lively thought provoking discussion on the topic.

I have been trying to do this idea in my "real-life" but very few of my friends have the time or inclination and I started to think about who I do I spend time with who is highly intelligent and would appreciate a new intellectual pursuit then the obvious answer hit me, the members of B&B. I hope others here will join me in starting both a Badger and Blade Book Club and a Badger and Blade Movie Club. If we can move forward I am very happy to and would look forward to spearheading both efforts.

My initial thoughts is one book every month and a movie either every week or every 2nd week.

Anyone who is interested please respond in this thread and if anyone has any specific questions for me as always send me a PM.

Thanks all and I look forward to hearing input and getting our clubs started this September.

Nice idea, Tim.

The only downside I foresee is that Nick may change your custom title to Oprah.

Hey Tim,

This is a great idea! The only potential wrinkle for me would a time commitment to complete a LONG book within a month's time. Since I'm currently taking night classes, lately, my pleasure reading has been less frequent than I would like.

Still, I'll follow the development of the club(s) with interest.

My vote is for book!

Non-fiction would really be great (my cup of tea)!

Gread Idea Tim!!

Make it Mr. Oprah and you've got a deal, that way I get half her money.

Frank, we could always stretch it out to 6 weeks or 2 months, it was only a suggestion in terms of time frame. I'm a grad student myself and I don't get to read nearly as many books as I like because of that commitment. We'll just have to see how the board feels, but I'm, personally, not stuck on that number, it was only a suggestion to get the ball rolling.

How I hope to operate the club (:clover: ) is similar to the Decant Club, where we suggest books, I'll take a tally and then we'll vote via a poll. We could always offer up more than one book, I also enjoy both fiction and non-fiction, but I have to admit I'm partial to the made-up stuff.

I'd be down for the movie club, and I'd give the book club a try, but that might be slightly more difficult as I work full time and have 3 night classes.

Great idea's! I am probably gonna have to pass on the first few since I am up to my elbows in scientific papers and if that ever comes to an end probably unemployed for a while... But it will be interesting to read what others think of certain books and movies. There is still space in the library too .

Love the idea. I don't do nearly enough pleasure reading, and I'd definitely participate.

Sounds good to me! I don't go for many bestsellers normally, but I'd give it a shot!

Sounds good to me. Good thing my fixin-to-read shelf is in a storage space somewhere...I need more books to stare at and wonder when I'll find the time to read them. :tongue_sm

For some reason I just san't get the image of Andy Kaufman standing in front of a college audience reading The Great Gatzby out of my head.

I'd be down for the book club, I'm always looking for something new to read.

I even have a few suggestions that might be something we would all have an interest in.

My sister manages a video store, so the movie club sounds great. And i would try the book club

Both sound like excellent ideas to me.

It gives everyone a chance to discuss interesting stuff with intelligent fellow-shavers.

Count me in for either/or

I don't have time to commit to reading books on a regular basis, but I'd gladly chime in on discussions on DVD movies from time to time ... consider me one of the Baker Street Irregulars ... even if I don't smell like bergamont and tobacco. (yeah, I know, Diogenese Club ... )

I like the idea of the Book Club. I would be interested too. Good call Tim. As for the monnicker, "Mister Oprah", how about Harpo Retsim instead?

Okay, nix that, I've gotten enough interest that we are going to give this try.

Please post your October Book Nominations in the stickied thread.

Additionally any members interested in a Movie Club please send me a PM.

Of course, the majority of books I "read" are audiobooks.
