Hello all,

So in trying lots of different things out, I tried out pre-shave oil as part of my prep. I really liked the result, shave-wise...but man, my razor, my hands, my sink...the stubble IN my sink were all sticky. I used CM 1705 Sandalwood...which I like the scent fine and liked shaving with it, just all the stickiness...

I'm sure some of them are gooey-er than others...anyone have recommendations? Trumpers Skin Food maybe? I like softening of the whiskers I got with it...like the scent...just looking for less of a mess.

Try making your own. The recipe I follow (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Pre-shave_prep) is not sticky at all. If you want to spend extra money, T&H has a fine one, too.

I personally am a fan of the thicker PSOs. I just apply it after the shower, then wash my hands right after. So far, so good.

As far as thinner ones go, I tried the T&H PSO and it is pretty thin. It has quite a strong orange citrus scent though.

How much did you use? And if the answer is more than "4 small drops", then you used too much.

+1

You really only need about 2 drops, massage it into your wet face for a little while. It's really supposed to soften the skin and beard, not supply slickness.

See? It is hard to resist the siren call of the pre-shave over-oilers.

That link points to an article with several recipes. Is there a particular one you use?

The one that read from ackvil: Five parts of Jason Natural Vitamin E oil, 5,000 i.u.( which is a mixture of almond, apricot, avocado, and what germ oil) plus .5 part of EVOO, glycerin, and one part each of almond oil, grape seed oil, and jojoba oil.

I don't find the Prorasso pre-shave too messy.

I use AOS preshave oil. At first, it simply seems to gum up everything including my brush.

Finally, I settled on a system. Pour no more than the size of a dime into your WET hands. Massage vigorously into your face and neck. Remove excess with washcloth. NOTE: AOS recommends a larger amount. That doesn't work for me.

I've had nothing but spectacular success with this system.

Good luck.

Pre-shave oil does not have to be very complicated. I simply use jojoba oil. I don't need more than 3 drops for a daily shave, maybe 4 if I've got a 2-day stubble. Massage it in a bit, splash some more water, then wash hands with soap and start lathering.

I've used AOS and T&H. As said, you don't need more than 3-5 drops. I pour into my hand and massage with that one hand only, so my hand that grips the razor never has any oil on it. AOS is a thicker oil than T&H and therefore will be more 'gummy' if too much is used. Like most shaving products YMMV.

A little goes a long way. A few drops is all you need. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of goop.

I just tried some Jermyn St. pre-shave gel for the first time the other day and really liked it. Same great scent as the shaving cream. It's a bit pricey, but a tiny dab was enough to cover my whole face.

part of it is this funky little applicator they have on the top of it (see photo)

the one i have you basically take it and turn it over and dip it into the open mouthed bottle. i just think i had absolutely no idea how much i was using with that thing...i was kind of trying to ask what are some of the lighter pre-shave oils versus the heavier ones, but i didn't ask it very well and i appreciate all the input
