My order from Larry at Whipped Dog arrived today, a day sooner that I expected. Luckily I didn't shave this morning, so I'm going to take it for a spin later tonight! Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty excited!

Nice! Do your best to remember the sensations you have of this first shave as it will be with a shave ready edge. Then you have a point of reference for the future. Good luck!

Be careful. Don't get discouraged if it doesnt come out perfect.

Treat that razor gently. Talk to it, just like you talk with your pet dog when no one is around, helps immensely. You want respect, you must show that bad boy razor respect!

Congratulations. I started with a whippeddog razor about a month ago and it was a great experience. Initially you may get a couple of small nicks, but don't let it discourage you, it took about a week and a half before I had the hang of it. If you are getting nicked, you're probably either using too much pressure or the angle of the blade is to steep. Keep at it, it's well worth the effort.

My advice? Go for safety and comfort first, and for quite awhile afterwards. Don't even think about a close shave until much later.

Well, I gave it a trial tonight, with mixed results. The good news is that no blood was shed, the bad news is that not much hair was actually removed by the straight. I lathered up some MWF, which I hadn't used for a few weeks, and unfortunately it wasn't very great lather. A bit on the airy and bubly side, so that might have been part of the problem. Once I figured out a comfortable way to hold the razor and a way to stand so that my hand wasn't blocking my vision, I started on my cheeks. Perhaps I was taking the no-pressure maxim to extremes, but the razor seemed to get caught up on my hair very easily, and I wasn't comfortable enough to use the force to cut through those hairs. As I hadn't shaved for a few days I decided to take a pass with my safety razor, and then returned to the straight. Unfortunately the lather situation was disintegrating somewhat, and wasn't very slick. Still, I went over each cheek with the straight and removed some hair, before going back to the safety to finish off the shave.

There's definately a lot to get used to. I'm sure my angle wasn't very good, I should use a soap that I get more consistent lather out of (like D.R. Harris Arlington!), and I'm sure with more practive I'll understand the feedback I'm getting from the straight and be able to do a more credible job. Anyway, I'm not disheartened, but I'm also not blown away. I'm certainly starting to understand the practical nature of the straight learning curve.

I'm still surfing that learning curve a couple of months in. Like we tell the new DE shavers, it will get better, but the straight learning curve is taking considerably longer, for me at least.
