What do these offer besides a nice scent as opposed to the gillette goop?

Trumpers and AOS offer fewer potentially harmful ingredients (petrochemicals), and many would argue that they make better (more protective) lather.

I"ve noticed several advantages to soaps or creams like Trumpers or AOS as opposed to shaving gels in a can. Apart from the lack of potentially harmful ingredients I get closer shaves and they actually rinse out of my razor rather than clogging it up. They also do provide better lubrication, beard softening and protection from the blade. They also smell better and are a whole lot more fun to use.

AOS and Trumpers are soap, shaving gel in a can contains petro-chemicals and some like Noxema actaully contain silicone. Which would you want on your skin?

I use gels and foams with my DE's. I get just a good of a shave from them as I do when I use soaps or creams. I also dont have any issues with the razor clogging when I use shave gels. Everyones mileage varies but I dont see why people have issues using gels asides from the chemicals used in their manufacturing. I think part of the reason so many stick their nose up at gels or goo as its called on here is because it just doesn't fit with the image of vintage shaving.

Potentially harmful ingredients? Seriously? Like what?

Also, huge generalizations here, as canned foams and gels are quite different, as are the many traditional creams.

Convenience aside, what do foams and gels offer that soaps and creams don't?

I like using Barbasol every now & then but that's about it. It's good for when I'm in a hurry.

For me (soap user)- less irritated skin, and more slickness during the shave. The endless variety of scents are just a bonus.

I, like many, can get a good shave with with DE or carts and canned SC. At this point though, I prefer using soaps and creams with a brush. And, the rare times I do use canned SC it works much better (than before I switched to DE) because I've learned to keep only a thin layer of cream/foam/gel on as wet a face as possible.

For me, there are real advantages to a good traditional soap or cream: 1) cost and value. They usually last longer and what I've bought seems far better in terms of glide, skin care, etc.; 2) Intangibles such as perceived superior and more interesting scents; 3) Feelings associated with doing something out of the ordinary, keeping a minor tradition alive. However, though I think these are advantages, too much hype seems to push this kind of thinking over to silly self-importance. It's still just shaving...

Soap - same job/maybe better than goo, minus the chemicals, and a whole lot cheaper/lasts longer
