View Full Version : Who suggested we watch "Gummo"?

I couldn't watch it... I didn't "get it" maybe? I watched until they "shot" the rabbit and went on and on about how they "hate ************** rabbits". After that scene I watched the rest in fast forward and put it back in the Netflix sleeve.

What did I miss?

The only thing I could gather was there are some terrible parents in this country who'd let their kids be in a movie like this swearing up a storm, etc. They couldn't have been but eight years old.

I didn't make it that far but did see it in fast foward.

I guess I'm too dumb to understand why people think this is good stuff?

Felt the same way with a few other movies. I just never got the appeal. I want to enjoy a movie, not be confused by it.

Someone using the pseudonym "goe 540334" posted this on Netflix:

Interestingly, people who like this film seem to praise its "creativity" and its "realism". Anyone who believes that Korine invented non-linear narrative is a little malnourished, film-wise. Most people who believe that this is an accurate view of the midwest (or poverty, or small-town life) do so from the vantage point of immunity; few lovers of Gummo have lived the life it depicts, but they are still sure of its "realism". This strongly suggests the film's function for its fans: a stylish, class-exploitation music video, which treats viewers to graphic, extreme abjection while reassuring them that they are not implicated. And in addition to being repulsive in content, it is soooo boring to anyone who doesn't derive pleasure from feeling superior to all the freaks that surely live in the neighboring town. Watch "Kids" instead; it possesses some gravity while "Gummo" has only contrived, shallow, sad posture.

I agree with "goe".

I watched Kids first myself. Then Gummo. It's been years since I've seen either, but I enjoyed Kids quite a bit more and thought Gummo to be a bit off my taste (at that time at least).

Legion, great photo though!

Are you sure that you did not get someone angry with you? Gummo is one of those revenge films that you strongly suggest to people that you want to get even with.

Hahah, it was on the "wierd films" thread on here awhile back... Maybe someone was miffed at the entire forum? :)

Yhhheaaa....Gummo...I've seen it. Once. It wasn't my idea to watch it the first time, and I have no desire to see it a second time.
