IMO- Tabac, Sir Irisch Moos, MWF and the D R Harris soaps are some of the easiest to lather and they do a terrific job on the face providing for great shaving.

In my opinion, the Italian made soft soaps are exceptionally good for beard softening. Not only the classics like Cella and P.160, but also the new entries like Vitos and RazoRock Linea Officina Artigiana. Among hard soaps, I want to mention all those manufactured by Valobra (the stick, AoS and C&S).

What Marco said!
I would also add Fraser's. Very good at softening the beard.

Putting some lather on my face for 3-4 minutes prior to shaving softens my beard well no matter what soap I've used that day.

+1 on Marco's recommendations. Also, for softening (and to add something new to the conversation), I'm a huge fan of the RazoRock Shave Gel (brushless)...I use it as a pre-shave and a stand-alone product, with great success. The other day I was in a rush, and wanted the lady of the house to line up the back of my neck (I buzz cut my hair, and lining myself up back there can be tricky). I didn't have time to build a lather, so I rubbed in about a nickel size dollop and handed her my EJ razor. She was amazed at how the hair seemed to yield so easily to the blade, especially without the use a “proper lather.”

Water is going to be the most softening agent you can apply. Warm water will soften faster than cold. (Although I personally cold-water shave about 90% of the time.)

Just take a warm shower and wash your face before you shave. Be sure to keep the beard area wet at all times after you leave the shower (splash a little water on the face with your hand every 30 seconds or so if it's going to be more than 30 seconds from the time you leave the shower until you have your lather ready to go.... just keep it wet and never let it get dry.)

Beyond a well hydrated hair shaft, any effect a soap may have on the cut-a-bility of a hair is going to be minimal in comparison.

Best part is the price! Yes, I have mastered the art of drying off after a shower without drying my face.

All shaving soaps soften hairs - if they didn't, they wouldn't be a very good shaving soap.

This stuff is amazing and bang for you buck. It like BBRevenge or TOBS Avocado honestly!

Razorock XXX & Fresco are very good as are QCS creams. Also, the usual suspects such as Speick stick, AOS soaps, etc.

Due to my reaction to Cella and other mandorela scented stuffs I m experimenting for the time being with RazorockXXX.
I m using your "method" with Italian soaps :-)
