View Full Version : Anyone ever use a DE with shaving oil only?

Prior to DE shaving, I used to use a Mach3 with shaving oil and got fantastic results. I have read of people using shaving oil for their last pass with a DE to get the super close BBS shave.

Has anyone tried using shaving oil for their entire DE shave?

I haven't, but my barber in town uses oil on the second and third passes when giving me a straight shave. Not sure what he uses, but he gets great results. The hot lather is for the initial face cleaning, then the first pass. Everything else is oil.

I have tried it on my last pass and get a very close shave. I have to be careful though, as will sometimes get a little razor burn.

I have never done it, but I went to a barber for a straight shave and that was all she used. I was a little worried about razor burn, but it was fine.

I've used oliveoligy only when I was traveling, does that count? I'm not sure it is a proper shave oil...

I have the oliveology oil, can't get a decent shave with it. Probably using it wrong, but it's not comfortable. Sometimes I use it as an aftershave.

I bought a small bottle of shave oil just to try it, out of curiosity. It worked fine - nice and smooth - but it gunked up my razor, so I didn't use it again after the first couple of tries.

Seems like most have had good results. I'll give it a go.

I use Somersets (a UK company) oil. It's expensive at $20/35mL but out of several oils, this is the only one I like. Before DE, it's all I used and the result with a Mach3 was a daily BBS, just not as long lasting as a DE.

I've been meaning to try it. The manufacture of RazoRock Shaving Gel suggests that it can be use as a "stand alone" product. So far I've only used it as a pre-lather treatment. By the way it's terrific product.

Well, I tried the shaving oil DE shave and I am surprised that the oil provided all the cushion I could need! No cuts, no burn...nothing! Great from when there is no time for brush lathering. It also allowed me to shave the same area a couple of times without burn or irritation.

The Mach3 is IMO still the best razor to use with shaving oil but I am totally surprised by the DE shave.

Well, after reading this thread I said "what the hell" and gave it a try - never again! I used Shave Secret oil, a Parker 22R, and a Derby blade only shaved on twice. I was only knocking off my five o'clock shadow. I only had the cojones to do a WTG shave. Man did it pull! Burn city afterwards! On the plus side, there were many wiskers in the rinse water; and no weepers.

Definetly not BBS, but I couldn't bring myself to do a second pass ATG or XTG, even if I had re-oiled. :thumbdown

Not oil, but I've used aloe vera gel with decent results. Not preferred, but decent.
