Just recently having purchased a razor from our own Scott (life2short) i was smitten with the edge he provided and through numerous PM'S He was able to steer me towards giving a thuri a try. Having a competent set of Nani's up to the 12k level It was my assumption that with enough experience it would be all i needed. the recent addition of said thuri has proved me wrong as i find the thuri takes the 12k and moves it up a new level, One of the more pleasant new findings is that the new stone being 7.5x1.125 inches in size is a dream to work with in hand, i am sure in my limited use that i not only like but can see myself favoring this style of honing vs. stone on bench and wonder what your thoughts would be on optimal size when working in this fashion. I certainly dont find the 1-1/8 width limiting at all but think perhaps up to 1-1/2 my be spot on? as always thanks for your much valued insight.

It's a matter of personal preference. I'm perfectly happy with anything from 4 to 7 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide. If I had to pick one I'd probably say 7 inches long by 1.5 wide as long as the blade isn't warped.

Do you find the edge smoother? Sharper? More supportive of your actions? I would love to know how the edge differed:thumbup1:

I have to say yes to both, and I am beginning to feel that both go hand in hand. I took a few of my razors which i thought to be very nicely honed and now they just whisk the hair away with zero resistance. my last few shaves have been the only ones in my nearly 1.5 yrs. experience that i felt i could walk out the door after one pass, and the second pass leaves me squeaky feeling on the skin. needless to say i am very pleased with my new development and will continue to hope that future growth will be as rewarding. Thanks for looking.

If you find the edges start to be too keen for your liking you can try a coticule finish using it just the way you do the Thuringian. If you decide you like it better, then with some time you can learn to use it instead of your 3k Naniwa all the way up to replacing the 12k too and only keeping the 1k for stubborn bevel sets and chip removal.
I would also like to say congrats on picking the use of the Thuringian so quickly and there is still a magical edge awaiting you.
My favorite size is 40mm wide on stones and that is the width of my favorite coticule. The Thuringian I have now is 30mm and it took some getting used to but I am managing. I do not finish every razor with it only the stubborn ones.

Ah..I am experimenting with sprays now, but the lure of the Thuringian and Jnats are always like a Sirens' song...grats on picking up your Thuri, I am green...: )

I got a Ozuku Asagi Lv5+ yesterday, and from the first honing and shaving off it, I got the best edge I've used to date. An incredibly combo of sharpness and smoothness. But I'll experiment with the Jnat with some CBN slurry, that could be cool. :)
But I still love my Feather SS, it's got a good spot in the rotation.

Is that the one you were mentioning in your other post? Is that the low cost one, or the high cost one? I don't think SWMBO will be happy with me spending 200US on "rocks" after i spent 100US on "water with diamonds in it" that doesn't sparkle, or shine or anything...

It's the larger one, it was around $180 shipped :001_smile
The traveler sized will find it's way to the BST.
