What kind of shaving creams does everyone on here use? I'm looking for something that lathers well and helps with the overall shave...

You may be able to pick up shaving creams locally vs online ordering. Check you local mall for The Body Shop. They offer a reasonable shaving cream. Also, check with Whole Foods or Wild Oats for Kiss My Face products. But if you were in London, the options would be very different.

If this question starts to get answered then I think you'll be even more confused than when you started. The fact is it's a matter of personal preference.

It's probably worth spending 1/2 an hour in the review section to get a feel for your options. There's also a "favorite 5 creams" thread going that might be helpful to you.

To the list of local brick-n-mortar store options, I'd add Bath & Body Works' C.O. Bigelow shaving cream, which is just rebranded Proraso (the box should say "Made in Italy"). You can order these on line, too; once you've opened that door, many other options apply, but these wouldn't be bad places to start. If you don't have any of these locally, they're still good ordering options. drugstore.com has Kiss My Face, which is ridiculously inexpensive and you get free shipping for the first order > $25. Even over the counter it's between $0.50 and $1.00 per ounce, depending on the size you buy, which you'll rapidly discover is roughly the same as stealing it compared with other cream prices.

As pointed out, that's a much more open question than you realize! There's so many terrific creams out there and every single one of them seem to have subtle little things that make them stand apart from the rest... In fact, one of the things you'll realize is that even different scents in the same type of cream will give you a completely different shave!!!

That's why, ultimately, the best shave cream is all of them! :w00t: That's right... Just go get a loan, and purchase every possible cream out there and give them all a whirl...

However... If I were going to suggest just a couple that I consider a "must" to try, I'd say:

TOBS Avacado... Great shave, and the avacado oil leaves your skin feeling great! Not to mention I find the scent absolutely intoxicating...

Likewise TOBS Mr. Taylor... Good shave, and the scent really just reminds me of that "barbara shop" scent... Really smells wonderful and drives the wifey crazy...

I consider Nancy Boy to be a staple that I keep around at all times... It provides a pretty good shave (nothing great about the scent, it's just peppermint), but what's great about it, is that in a pinch for time you can use it brushless and still get a fantastic shave...

I also find the T&H Trafelgar to really have a terrific scent as well as a great shave, though I find it to be "picky" about the water/cream ratio... Pay attention when whipping this one, as it takes practice to get it right...

That should give you a start...

If you're new to wet shaving, you'd like to find a brush too.

There is a Casswell Massey in Charlotte, and they sell Musgo Real among other shave products.

A number of us love Musgo Real (me included), and it's fairly inexpensive at $9.00 a tube. A great value IMHO.

Most of us agree that one of the most enjoyable aspects of wetshaving is the exotic array of products to explore.

Best of luck, and let us know what you come up with.

Gotta have some Kiss My Face on hand, man! Whole Foods, The Vitamin Shoppe, or some organics grocer.

Cheap (pricewise) and excellent qualities! Use it lathered up or brushless for those rush shaves!

if you're looking to order:

Speick SC is great, as is TOBS Avocado. I also really like the proraso red tube SC.

In addition to reading the reviews, there's someone with a sticky on the B/S forum who's selling samples - the best way to try a bunch of stuff without breaking the bank/ending up with tubs/tubes of stuff that didn't tickle your fancy.

My favourite creams are Trumper rose and JM Fraser, but I keep tubes of Omega and Ingrams on hand for when I want the cooling sensation of eucalyptus or menthol.

I've spent a bit of time reading the reviews and posts here (to my pocketbook's detriment) and found that quite possibly every tube or tub of cream currently available - with the exception of Caswell-Massey - has at least one raving fan. Sadly that does nothing to narrow things down. And, to further complicate matters, favorites change over time as new ones are found, and old favorites are re-discovered. So, go forth with an open mind! Adventures await!

Keep in mind that Musgo Real is not a Caswell Massey product. They are just a retailer of that cream.

and no, we're not suggesting you buy Caswell Massey!

A good cream to start with is Taylor of Old Bond Street ('TOBS'). Really any flavour is fine, although the Avocado has the reputation. The stuff lathers really well and easily, and gives a good shave. It's cheap to order from QED or Classicshaving.com (and other places too.)

You will end up with a million suggestions. Start with TOBS, and see how that goes.

i actually think that a great cream to start with is AOS. It can be picked up at any Nordstroms as well as most other high end retailers. It lathers well, shaves well, and is the one that gets many getting involved with this stuff. T&H falls into this category too. The Almond and the Limes are both great T&H creams.
