I was minding my own business driving home when I noticed an older gentleman sitting outside of a shop with his dog. I looked up to see a sign "ANTIQUES, ESTATE SALES". Noting that most people here usually "score" great DEs from these sorts of places, I drove back around and parked.

The man I noticed was the owner of the store and a very nice guy. I found two single edge razors with a lot of wear which I picked up for $10. He also threw in a gillette three piece wooden box with a couple of different heads in them. I actually didn't want any of these items but I was just hoping to make a friend in the business, which I apparently did. He promised he'd hold any DEs that he came across for me!:001_smile

Now for the pictures:

From the descriptions on the wiki, I take that I purchased one 1912 GEM, and an ever-ready (no clue what model).

What are these items ACTUALLY worth? I might just shine them up a bit and PIF one and keep one just in case I catch the SE bug...

You have a Gillette "New" head, the wood box appears to be for a Big Fellow I think, not bad....

the other one is a Gem 1912 ornate handle Brooklyn razor (avg 15 to 30 $$ on ebay). good buy for 10 bucks, you can probaly sell the box for 30 or more. they are hard to find..

The Ever-Ready looks to be a 1924 model.

dalejr, alex, and man00ver, thanks for ID'ing everything!

I wonder if anyone on B&B owns a "big fellow" and needs a box to keep 'er company..

On a related note, does anyone want the combs and head pictured? I'd like to give it to someone who could use it. First dibs goes to the people who helped me ID everything as well as people whos names I recognize! PM me if you're interested! Included in this are the two golden open comb as well as the cap...and a "probak" aluminum(?) open comb!

I'm going to attempt to shine up the ever-ready headed razor since it appears to be in slightly better condition. Whats strange is that it shares the same handle as the 1912 GEM. Did someone swap this out or did it ever come with the 1924 model? the Ever-Ready does appear to be the one you suggest, man00ver.

The handle on your Ever-Ready was used on Star, Every-Ready and Gem razors since they were all made by the same people.

Very nice pickups!

You've got it looking very nice, and the ornate handle is my favorite for both looks and feel. It always feels a bit funny loading blades in the 1924, because the little stabilizing tabs on the sides of the guard plate are pretty much useless when you're using modern blades, but just slide the blade forward into the guard stops and carefully click the cap closed and you'll be fine. It's a great shaver with super audio feedback. Take it easy, because they can bite if you're careless. You're NOT using a hardware-store blade, are you?

Another feature of the 1924 is that the head can hold water. Let it drain combs-down after rinsing, so it doesn't dribble on you. Have fun!

in you first picture we see 1 GoodWill and 1 NEW baseplate and a NEW cap. The silver baseplate looks like Probak to me.

Wow, nice score on the box. If I was a collector I'd jump on it, but alas my Big Fellow lives on the counter getting shaved with a couple times a week!

Wow, you guys are crazy with the identification using my crappy cellphone pictures. Well, the razors are cleaned and sterilized, the baseplates and caps are being PIFd to a person who has just the handle! Its too bad the 1912 was the nickle plated model. Someone got to it before I did and apparently used steel wool. Gouges in the plating.. The "holds" for the blade are both there too.

man00ver, I tried the 1924 on my arm hair to make sure it wouldn't cut me. I now have a nice bald patch on my arm..guess it does work!

Boiled, scrubbed, alcoholed...

and I took my first SE shave! I tested both the 1924 ER and the 1912 GEM and the GEM seemed a little more stable with a blade (both are butt-ugly but mechanically perfect). Cooked up a nice lather with my DRH Arlington and Wee Scot and went to town on my face! I was a little worried about razor rash since I had shaved just 12 hrs earlier in the morning but I wanted to do a night shave just so I could take my time.

End result:
No weeper
Slight irritation but only where I buffed, and its not red - I just feel a very slight itch.
and a SAS, very close to DFS.

Now I understand what you SE people talk about when mention the "noise feedback" this thing is LOUD! I like it, but I don't LOVE it. I might keep one, sell/PIF/gift the other and pick up a 10pack of good blades or so and use the SE when I'm bored.

The DEs just give me a plain better shave YMMV. I might change my mind when I use a good set of blades (GEM) instead of the CVS brand blades I purchased... but DE shaving is just so much more fun in my opinion.

Anyway, thought I should wrap up this thread with a conclusion of what happened. I did PIF the Gillette NEW razor head to a member here who had only the handle, so thats a nice ending for me. It would've driven me crazy to have razor parts that I couldnt use, leading me to RAD!

The top photo is of three guards and one cap. The guards, L to R, are Probak, Gillette NEW, Gillette Goodwill. The cap looks like it goes with the Gillette NEW (that is, if it has long tabs that match the slot on the top of the Gillette NEW guard). If the underside of the Gillette NEW has patent dates that are the same (or close to the same) as those on the underside of the Probak guard, that dates it to very late 1930 or later. If it does not have patent dates, then it dates from (perhaps) late 1929, but to no later than Nov. 1930.

Shorter tabs on the underside of the Gillette NEW guard indicates early manufacture, around 1930 but not later.

Okay, that may be more than you want to know . . .

Doug, haha that is an insane amount of information. Thanks, I should pass it along to the man I sent it to!

Ike, the angle is a little different for effective SE shaving. For your next try, start with the head placed flat against the face, then pull off just a little so the angle is very acute.

Will do. Thanks for the tip. I really need to read more about the SE shaving
