I noticed in the "man bag" thread that a few lads wore a kilt, as I do.
I currently own 10 kilts. AD is affects every interest group.

Here I am wearing the U.S. Air Force tartan
I was wondering who else is kilted?

I don't own one yet, but I'm very interested in an Utilikilt. Not very traditional, but very cool.

Check out USA Kilts (http://www.usakilts.com).
Rocky & Kelly made 6 of my kilts. They are outstanding kilt makers.
BTW, they made the kilts for an episode of Reno 911 and they did the kilts for Madonna's reinvention tour.
I was at the Dublin Irish Festival (that's Dublin Ohio) last night to see Gaelic Storm. Many of the men there were wearing their kilts, which definitely put me in mind of getting one of me own!

From an old Scottish friend: "What's worn under the kilt? There's nothing worn under the kilt. It's all in perfect working order!"

I am the proud owner of a kilt from www.sportkilt.com. These folks are great and I have a matching noggin wrap to go with my Blackwatch Kilt. Every year at the Celtic festival here I volunteer to work the beer tent, don my kilt (commando of course) and have a great time.
Long live the Kilt!!!!

I wore a kilt in the MacRae tartan when I played in the pipe band (http://www.grandfathermountainhighlanders.org/), but had to give it back when I quit. I really want one of my own tartan, MacNeil, but I think I'm going to have to wait until my brother or I get married. I also really want a Utilikilt, but I'm not sure I could pull it off.

I have a couple from different bands I've played with. The one I wear for gigs is a government tartan, while the other is a Davidson. Neither kilt is the nicest but I have a nice seal sporran I received as a graduation gift a long time ago.
One of these days I'll get something nice with box pleats and whole deal, but I just got out of school and am still paying off loans.

When you say "government" tartan, is that like a district tartan?
Which one is it? Blackwatch?

I love Stewart Black (http://www.usakilts.com/tartans/stew_blk.jpg). I would love a kilt in that tartan, but I'd feel kind of weird since my mother's side in Campbell. :wink2:

My very first kilt was an Amerikilt. It's camoflage (Vietnamese tigerstripe).
I was talking to Mike from AK a couple of weeks ago at a Celtic festival. He said those kilts are no longer available (tigerstripe).
By the way, gentlemen, women go crazy for a man in a kilt. It's a fact. :-D

I've had a MacDonald kilt since I was 18, family tradition. Worn it to pubs and bars on various occasions, always gets a lot of looks :)

I'm in the same situation as Dmac who used to have a kilt in the "official NC state tartan" (tax dollars really being put to work here ) when playing in a pipe band.
Hey Dmac, what years did you play with GMHPB? I played with NC State from 1996 - 2004.

I wouldn't think of wearing my dress kilt right now.
The temp forecast for today is 103 degrees F with a heat index of 117 degrees F.

I think I was out by 1996. Somewhere around 1992-1995ish. I think we competed against NC State a couple of times.

This is not intended to be snide in the slightest, but when does one wear a kilt? What the proper occasions? I have zero experience with kilts and I'm curious.

Usually formal wear (i.e., tux occasions), though I've worn mine to the pub more than once with less formal attire. And a few matches, and elsewhere.

I've worn my kilts to everything from a BBQ to Celtic festivals to Black tie affairs.
What determines the appropriateness of the kilt is what you wear with it.
Kilts are not just for formal occasions.

Full dress kilts are made to measure and meant for formal affairs. They're the Caledonian answer to the tuxedo.
However as F16 noted you can dress the kilt down for informal occasions as well. Try doing that with your cummerbund!
F16 I wonder if your man Sharpe (see avatar) ever wore the kilt?

I've seen Sean Bean in a kilt, but not Richard Sharpe.
I did see the Gordon Highlanders a few times in some of the episodes.

Now days it is mostly formal stuff, and alot of Scottsmen don't actually wear them anymore. When I lived over in the UK many years ago some Scottish men wore them but it was more a Scottish nationalist/patriotic thing and they usually didn't have very high-profile jobs (a few bus drivers I saw wore them).

That's what I was trying to say in the post above. Though sometimes I'll see them worn at a match, especially a heated one.

It's only appropriate to wear a kilt on days that have a vowel in them.
