I don't normally post here, but had a pretty remarkable dinner this evening with a fellow B&B'er, so I thought I would share.

Appetizer: I did not prepare one as dinner and dessert were of prolific proportions.

Dinner Beverage: Sweet Tea. Not tea with some sugar in it or tea with artificial sweetener, but good, old fashioned, southern, homemade Sweet Tea. I'm talking 1 gallon of water boiled with 3 1/2 to 4 cups of sugar and steeped for 5 hours before chilling. Lip smacking good stuff.

Salad: Standard variety garden salad with the choice of either Ranch Dressing or a Roasted Salsa Vinaigrette (smokey with just a little kick).

Main Course: 16 oz. Rib-eye steaks, superbly marbled with just the right amount of fat, marinated for 9 hours, crusted with Lemon Garlic Pepper, and cooked to a perfect Medium.

Dessert Beverage: Aeropressed coffee from freshly ground beans (forgive me as I've forgotten the exact name/roaster. I know it was a dark roast).

Dessert: Triple chocolate cake soaking in a splash of Kahlua, a layer of sliced fresh strawberries, a healthy dollop of made from scratch whipped cream (also with a splash of Kahlua and mixed with a few ground up coffee beans), and topped with fresh raspberries.

The meal was out of this world (if I do say so myself) and the company was even better. It is hard to beat good food enjoyed with good friends.

CI Legends White (Camacho)

So far, this is my favorite of the CI Legends series. Very well constructed cigar, I had a bit of an uneven burn, but the wind seemed to kick up quite a bit last night so there wasn't much I could do about it. I got a lot of smokiness and nut flavor with just a hint of vanilla. A nice medium bodied smoke.

2005 Portteus Petite Sirah - We picked this one up in Washington last year.

Their description:

There's a hint of camp fire at the beach, and more serious than S'mores in a bottle, this is deep, dark chocolate eclair and a few wild huckleberries.

Lots of fruit, a little earth, moderate tannins. Nice alone, but better with food. We had some aged Gouda and crackers and found them very complimentary.

Enjoyed a Casa Torano on the deck late this afternoon while I burned through about a 100 pages of my book("Get a Life" by William Shatner). This cigar is amazing. There was a few points where I was so involved in the book I left the cigar in the ashtray for probably close to 10 minutes and it never once went out on me!

If there is such a thing as a budget Belgian beer..I guess this would be one of them. I kinda view this one as a beer I would enjoy while doing yard-work on a hot day. I also found that I enjoyed drinking this beer straight out of the bottle, rather than out of a proper glass.

Yup, that sounds about right. It wasn't as good as I expected. It's different, but there's something about it that I tired of after one bottle. I found it better with food.

I got one of these Cienfuegos cigars in a sampler I purchased awhile back. It's been sitting in my humidor for over a month now and I took it out tonight to keep me warm on this chilly, rainy evening here in the Badger state.

All I knew about this cigar was that it's one of Rolando Reyes Sr. cigars of Puros Indios fame. Well, all I can say is this old timer can make one damn fine smoke! What an incredible cigar! The burn was a little inconsistent but the draw was perfect. I can't recommend this baby enough! (Cory, BUY ONE!)

I'd be down for that. Just let me get something a little more interesting in the humidor to share. Right now it's looking pretty bleak...

As for the meaning of "herf", I found this:

The term "Herf" used to describe the smoking of a cigar comes from the 1960's in America when many cigar smokers listened to Herf Alpert and the Tijuana Brass while smoking their favorite stogie. The music was latinesque and thus provided an atmosphere of semi-cuban reminiscence. Soon, cigar smokers began to say things like "I was with the Brass last night and the Herf was so good I thought I was in Havana." Thus, we can all thank Herf Alpert for his influence on 'garbonics.

Whatever, sounds like beer and smokes to me.

Nice! ...and I know what you mean about a bleak looking humidor. While I'm no longer in college, being married comes out to pretty much the same situation. NO MONEY!

I have found C-Bid, though, so things might get real interesting, real fast.

Thanks too for satisfying my curiosity on the origins of "Herf." It's such a strange term and I think you nailed it on the head with "beer and smokes."

The burn was a little inconsistent but the draw was perfect. I can't recommend this baby enough! (Cory, BUY ONE!)

Especially if you get some off an auction site! I seen them go for close to half what the retail online places sell them for. They will definitely be a part of my next order, too bad the humi is overflowing as is!

I finally checked out CBid last week and while I've only won one lot for a fiver of some random Perdomo's, let's just say I've done a lot of...prospective bidding. Which reminds me, I have to pop on over there and see how I'm doing.

I hope to also have the problem of an overflowing humidor soon.

Tonight's indulgence started with a Pilsner Urquell. Next up, a Murphy's Irish Stout (which I tend to like a bit better than Guinness for some reason). Who knows, maybe even a glass of wine with dinner. At any rate, it's Friday, so booze beware.

My wife left on a 3 1/2 hour drive headed for a personal shower/bachelorette party, so I've got the whole day to myself before attending a bachelor party tonight.

I wonder what kind of trouble I can get myself into today?

I'll probably start things off with a nice walk with my dog since it's turning out to be a gorgeous day. Then a good shower and shave followed by an over indulgent lunch...I'm thinking a fat bacon cheeseburger. Mmm...

Then it's definitely a few cigars paired with a couple of beers and maybe a book or I'll bring the laptop out on my patio.

Ahh...the possibilities that the day holds. Now if I could just get my ass off the couch...

MMA and chess are very similar imo. You play off your opponent's moves, waiting for them to make a mistake, you set them up thinking you are going to do one thing, than change your tactics on them. Both take a lot of thinking and strategizing, it's just that chess is a lot less painful!

Popped the cork on a bottle of Trader Joe's Vintage Ale 2006 (brewed by Unibroue) that I'd been cellaring for many months. An exquisite, dark Abbey/dubbel style Belgian ale.

Sometime this week, I'll do the same with my bottle of 2005, maybe share some pics.

For those of you who enjoy long-term cellared beers, I recommend picking up one of these. They're available at TJ's yearly around the holidays, bottle conditioned and cork & wire sealed. And being TJ's, inexpensive for the quality. They age well for about 3 years, I'm told.

C-Bid! I got a 8 pack sampler for $9 I think. 4 Connecticut and 4 Maduro. Boxes off the retail sites are just as reasonable. $45 for a box of of Toros! In my opinion, they could sell for twice that and I would still purchase them. Even with my limited cigar knowledge, most cigars at this price don't burn or draw as well as these guys.

I bought a fiver of these on C-Bid a while ago too. I figured at a buck a cigar I would give them a shot. I am still deciding on them. It’s very mild and probably not for many of the cigar smokers here. It would be a great morning cigar or good on the golf course. A great cigar for those times you want to smoke but arent in the mood for a complex cigar. Sort of a "no-brainer" cigar.
Very easy draw with a lot of smoke in each draw. I have been told that 3-4 months of aging in the humidor does wonders for them.

I would agree with you there. I had my first one after I gave it 5 days or so in the humi and didn't think too much of it. The last one I had has been in the humi for almost a few months now and was MUCH better flavor wise. That and 90% of the time my cigar time coincides with reading so my mind isn't totally focused on the flavors.

And "no-brainer" describes me fairly well!

Now granted, I'm not a huge Maduro fan(I don't dislike them, but I'm more of a Connecticut and Cameroon fan:drool: ), but I know Cory is so if I sparked his interest, I certainly don't want to get any hate mail from him! I'm already on his wife's bad side.

The Maduro version is similar to the Connecticut in that the flavors are pretty straight forward and you won't be in for anything spectacular. I got notes of cedar, black licorice, some sweet smokiness, and maybe a bit of coffee. Again, these flavors are very subtle, by no means are they going to smack your pallet with some fierce full bodiedness. However, considering the price and how well constructed these cigars are, I have a feeling they will be a regular in my humidor. Great everyday smoke, as they say.

I loves me some maduro! You got lucky. I almost had the stamp on the envelope. :a53:

In all seriousness, though, I'm faced with an interesting situation every time I'm in a position to expand my collection. My wife's still a student, so financially, we're firing on one piston at the moment. So I ask myself, "Do I get the maduro that I'm almost positive I'll like, or do I grab something in a natural variety?" I gotta say, though, that CBid is easing this pain substantially. I won a fiver of some double corona fresh rolled Perdomos that are calming down in the humidor as we speak. In addition, I'm in a lot for some RP Vibes that will be closing tonight and I'm currently in a pretty good position on those.

By the way, nice review Matt.

Just finished playing the role of domesticated husband, i.e., did the laundry and dishes, so now it's time to play.

To start things off, I opted for a pre-dinner Rangpur and tonic while I brined some chicken that will be finding its way to the grill soon.

Next up will be a Pilsner Urquell while I fire up the grill. It seems that beer is a great timer. Open the beer after lighting the charcoal (I use a chimney starter) and drink as normal. When finished with the beer, your ready to dump the coals and start cooking...and grab another brew.

With dinner, I'm thinking we'll open up the bottle of Sauvignon blanc if I can pry the bottle of Gewürztraminer out of my wife's hands...she's not big on change, haha.

Dessert will be chocolate chip mint ice cream, followed by a pint of Murphy's Irish Stout and a Perdomo double corona cigar.

Needless to say, the anticipation is killing me.

Last night during the taping of "The Cigar Nation," I tried my first camaroon. It was a Perdomo La Tradicion something. To be honest, I couldn't discern any difference in it compared to a natural wrapper cigar. It tasted good and burned even, but the wrapper did crack in a few places midway down the cigar. I remember hearing that Camaroon wrappers are delicate, so I wasn't too shocked. Even so, though, for $8.00, I expected more. It's been my very unscientific observation that the more I spend on a cigar, the less I seem to enjoy it. Huh, fine by me!

For the cigar fans - Dominican and Nicaraguan long-fillers with a Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut shade wrapper. IMO, these are perfect morning cigars. They are mild bodied but have a very complex flavor that comes with lots and lots of creamy smoke. A variety of flavors: subtle spice, creamy sweetness, a peppery earthiness

Friday and Saturday were spent at the Minnesota State Fair. Here's what I remember eating:

Deep fried cheese curds.
Pit roasted sweet corn complete immersed in melted, clarified butter--liberally salted and peppered.
Elk burger.
Salmon on a stick.
Cajun crawfish.
Deep fried dill pickles.
A beef stick.
Fudge puppy (Belgian waffle on a stick, dipped in fudge, topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, and strawberries.)

...I know there's more, but at the moment the thought of all the crap I ingested this weekend is making me nauseous...
