I'm looking into buying my second DE razor. I've been using my 40's Gillette SS for about 3 years now and want to try a new razor. I've been looking into both the Merkur 38C and Edwin Jagger DE89. My favorite blades in my SS are Feather and Red Personnas, my neck can be tough to shave closely without getting irritated.

So, what say you? 38C or DE89? Anyone own both and have some comparisons?

Thanks!

Just my 2 cents since I own both razors.

I've been using the EJDE89 exclusively for 2 months now. I find it to be a well balanced shaver. It's hard for me to find a blade this razor does not like. It feels like a Fat Boy set on 4 or 5. The DE89 is a razor everybody should have in their arsenal.

The 38c is a different animal all together because the longer poll adds more weight to the razor which can lead to more difficult maneuvering for some. I've been shaving with the 38c 2+ years and it works well with Feathers and less sharper blades but it's not as forgiving as the DE89. The 38c is most definitely more aggressive than the DE89. Overall I like the razor but not nearly as much as the DE89. The DE89is smooth every single time.

As always, I have to add that this is just my opinion. What works for me may not work for you. This isn't a one-size-fits-all hobby/lifestyle. I'm sure others will chime in. :thumbup1:

Can I get some mod help here? I misspelled the razor name in the subject, should read '38C or DE89?'

Thanks!

I have both razors and I really like the DE89, but I like shorter handled razors better. The 38 is a great razor heavier, longer and a two piece.

My vote is for the DE89.

Nothing new here. I think former threads say the same thing: that the 38C is more aggressive. I personally prefer the DE89. fit and finish is better. It's milder but pairs well with a Feather for me.

it was a tough choice for me to pick for u, until I read how easily u get irritation under ur neck....Definitely the EJ89. No question, easy choice for me, Ive had both.

I for one prefer the Merkur razors, but be sure to take a look at their 1904. Same head as the HD but IMHO a much better razor. :w00t:

The Edwin Jagger would be a mild shaver like your Gillette, so if you want to stick with familiar territory, go for the EJ. If you want something different, go with the Merkur. I started with the 38C and it's still my preferred razor. I use a Gillette Super Speed for "quick" weekday shaves and the Merkur for days I can take my time. The Merkur takes more time (due to the aggressiveness) but less effort to get BBS, if that makes sense.

I've had both. I sold my 38C after getting my DE 89L and haven't looked back. The DE89 is deceptively mild. By that I mean it feels mild but shaves very close. It's one smoooooooth shaver!

Well, for any that are interested, I chose the DE89. Its on the way here now.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Well, my DE89L came in a few days ago and I shaved with it this morning.

I. Love. It.

Probably my best shave ever. Very smooth, close, irritation free shave. I used a Personna (red wrapper) blade and Proraso cream. I'll try a Feather in it after this blade is done.

Congrats on the great razor and shave. The Personna RP and the Feather are very different blades. The results will be interesting.
