Okay... I'm pretty excited. I haven't taken many photos of my razors and they all have lighting problems. My photography knowledge is pretty weak, but I knew I needed a light box to do these macro shots properly. So I'm thinking...ugh...sounds expensive. Ding dong, I was wrong. A few minutes on Google, a visit to the Dollar Store and small u-haul box later and I've got my own personal macro photo studio. Yay me.
The subject is a bespoke soap dish from Sara Bonnyman (of Moss Scuttle fame). I couldn't find my tripod and the camera is a Canon SD700IS set to macro mode.

Explain what you did to the box and how you lit the soap dish. Did you use an on camera flash?

I followed the destructions on this link:

Cut out three sides and used masking tape to stick white tissue paper over the holes. The backgrounds are just pieces of poster board.
The shots of the soap dish were done exactly where the final shot of the light box is. Out in the back yard, ~7:30 or so in the evening, sun to the back of the light box. Natural light only and no flash.
Good job Brian! Saras bowl is very nice as well, how does it work?

Brian,
Great bespoke bowl. Do we contact Sara and order that as the "Brian Bowl"???
Also, even though it's been posted before, thanks for posting that link for the DIY kit. I had misplaced the link.
Now, on to serious matters. That table in the bottom photo. I'm thinking that somewhere, someone is missing their curtains from the '70's!

It works great. I got three because I wanted something for soap refills that looked nice. I lather on my face instead of the bowl so I didn't want a lot of clearance. The bowl pictured has a C&E Sienna refill in it.

Thanks..heheh. It doesn't have a name and Sara referred to it as "your soap holders" (I got three of them). Although...it'd be kinda cool to have a named bowl. Then I could drink scotch with Jim Ayers and Chris Moss
As for the table cloth...we've got tea towels to match. They're new so they're retro

Amazing! I found-and-read the contents of this URL only yesterday, and plan to build one on my next day off (this Wednesday). I'm going to go to a local art-supply store and see what larger sizes of tracing paper and poster-board they carry; that, and find a sturdy carton (say, for example, a large microwave or medium-sized TV).
It's a brilliant fusion of low-tech and high-tech. Oh, and your photos are appealing.
Smooth shaving!

Thanks! They were all point and shoot, I let the camera do the work. I'm really suprised that such a simple and cheap thing had such a huge impact to the quality of my pictures.
Apart from the box, everything was from the dollar store:
14 sheets white tissue paper: $1.00
2 sheets poster board (one black, one white): $1.00
Masking tape: $2.00
I don't think it took more than 30 minutes to put together which included some ADD type multi-tasking.
